This is an interesting question: why does God give us suffering? Or, does indeed God give us suffering at all? This is a knotty question in all religions. Only Hinduism and Buddhism clearly and boldly say that our suffering is due to our own karma, and God has nothing to do with it. Then what is the remedy? It is here that each sect, philosophy, tradition has its own answer. The most uncompromising stand is taken by Advaita Vedanta and its twin, Buddhism. They say the world is of the nature of suffering, suffering is due to karma caused by ignorance and the only remedy or cure is enlightenment, or right knowledge. They do not compromise on this . But the other Bhakti schools of Vedanta [ including Saiva Siddhanta] postulate a merciful God appeals to whom would result in relief. But here too we come across as many instances of unanswered prayers as the answered ones. So we run in circles. Yet, belief in God or a higher power brings some solace or a change of perspective, even if the prayer is not answered. AS Robert Browning wrote:
‘Our reach should exceed our grasp
    Or what is heaven for?”
Hindu scriptures contain millions of prayers seeking relief from all sorts of difficulties. But there is only one prayer that specifically asks for more difficulties! In the Bhagavatam, we have the instance of Kunti Devi praying to Lord Krishna, on the occasion of his departure to Dwaraka,to give her more difficulties
    Vipada: santuna:shashvat tatra tatra jagatguro
Bhatho darshanam yatsyaata punar bhava darshanam
Oh Bhagavan Jagatguro! Please give me more and more of such difficulties that lead me to have your Darshan, which removes the possibility of rebirth! [ I Skandam. chapter 8]
So here the secret is out: difficulties make us seek God that bestows Liberation!
