/ November 29, 2019*Yes, we are at times shocked when actors doing some roles are seen doing things not consistent with the screen or drama role, like an epic character in the Mahabharata smoking. J.V.Somayajulu became famous for portraying Shankar Sastry is the Telugu movie “Shankarabharanam” in the 70s. He lived the role . I was shocked when I once found him smoking! It seemed unacceptable, somehow, not merely unexpected! That is how some characters played on the screen influence us . After Shivaji Ganesan played “Kappalottiya Tamilan” V.O. Chidambaram Pillai, it became difficult to accept him in other roles, which all seemed lesser. It used to be said that Charlton Heston the Hollywood idol who played Moses in “Ten Commandments” was so influenced by this character that his entire career changed, he avoided the normal roles of routine heroes. Heston himself has written about how hard he prepared for this role, how he had really ‘run into’ Moses at least three times . He so identified with the character that he suggested to Cecil B DeMille the director that he would like to do the role barefooted! Such is the dedication of the really great actors.*
