Bangladesh PM vows to punish Durga Puja violence instigators

Following reports of vandalism in Durga Puja pandals in Bangladesh, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued a warning to the miscreants and said they would taken to task. “Incidents in Cumilla are being investigated. Nobody will be spared. It doesn’t matter which religion they belong to. They will be hunted down and punished,” she said during an event at Dhakeshwari National Temple in Dhaka.

The Bangladesh Prime Minister’s remarks come after four people died in the violence that broke out at Hindu temples in various parts of Bangladesh, including Chittagong.

Attacks were carried out on Durga Puja sites and temples in Cumilla on October 13 after rumours surfaced that a copy of the Quran was allegedly placed near the feet of a Durga idol.

Attacks were also reported in Noakhali, Chandpur, Cox’s Bazaar, Chittagong, Chapainawabganj, Pabna, Moulvibazara and Kurigram.

The Bangladesh government deployed paramilitary forces in 22 districts to curb the violence. “Investigations are underway and we are identifying the culprits using camera footage,” deputy inspector general Anwar Hossain said.

There are more than 3,000 Durga Pujas in Bangladesh, where Hindus make up for nearly 10 per cent of the population.

Allahabad HC Judge Wants a Law Giving Heritage Status to Ram, Krishna, Bhagavad Gita

Justice Shekhar Kumar Yadav of the Allahabad high court is at it again.

He made news recently for his remarks that parliament should make a law declaring the cow a “national animal” and include cows within the ambit of fundamental rights. Justice Yadav made these remarks while denying bail to a man accused of cow slaughter.

On Friday, while granting bail to a man accused of making obscene remarks against Lord Rama and Krishna on Facebook, the judge observed that Lord Ram, Lord Krishna, the RamayanaGita and its authors Maharishi Valmiki and Maharishi Ved Vyas respectively, are part of the country’s heritage, and should be so recognised by the Indian parliament, by enacting a law.

The judge described the obscene remarks made by the accused as an injury to the faith of the majority of the people of this country and as spoiling the peace and harmony in society, with innocent people being made to bear the brunt of it. Justice Yadav said that if the court was lenient in this case, it would be a morale booster for similar accused, whose conduct would harm the country’s harmony.

However, he granted bail to the accused, taking note of the fact that he had been in jail for 10 months when the trial has not yet started, and is unlikely to end in the near future. The judge gave the accused conditional bail,

Making a reference to the Supreme Court’s judgment in the Babri Masjid-Ram janmabhoomi title case, Justice Yadav said that the apex court had given a verdict in favour of those who believe in Lord Ram.

Justice Yadav also urged mandatory inclusion of lessons for children in all schools on India’s heritage.

Trishula Deeksha in Mangaluru

The ‘Trishula Deeksha’ of activists of pro-Hindu outfits held at the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) office in Mangaluru, on the occasion of Ayudha Puja, has invited criticism from various quarters, prompting Mangaluru City Police Commissioner N Shashi Kumar to instruct his department to verify the matter.

It may be recalled that as many as 150 activists of VHP and Bajrang Dal were given ‘trishulas’ during Ayudha Pooja, under the leadership of VHP Mangaluru divisional secretary Sharan Pumpwell and Bajrang Dal leader Raghu Sakleshpura at the VHP office in Kadri.

Similar training camps were held in Udupi, as well as some other taluks of Dakshina Kannada, and the new members were allegedly asked to “make use of trishul”.

Sharan told TNIE that it is an annual programme observed by the organisation, which could not be held for two years owing to the pandemic. “It is organised as per law where we symbolically offer ‘trishulas’ to new members. This is a training camp for the new activists and they are given ‘deeksha’ here. It is not a weapon and nobody can be harmed by it. We have not conducted the event at a public place. Trishula is given to the activists, motivating them to work and fight for the organisation,” he said.

Meanwhile, the commissioner told reporters that the organisers have stated that they held the programme every year, but he has instructed the headquarters’ ACP to verify it.

RSS LEADER’S SPEEACH  ON  KASHMIR TERRORISTS

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on Friday called population control as the need of the hour and cautioned the government about maintaining extra vigil on the borders.

In his Vijaydashmi address IN Nagpur in Maharashtra, Bhagwat said India should be cautious about the Taliban. “The Taliban may have changed, but have Pakistan and China changed?” he asked. “We need to be careful about all our borders,” he said.

Bhagwat said people in Jammu and Kashmir are getting the benefits of doing away with Article 370. “Terrorists want to re-establish fear in the minds of people for their survival, that is why they are doing targeted killings,” he said. “We must give a befitting reply to the terrorists,” he said, speaking on the killings of civilians in J&K.

Bhagwat also called for freeing Hindu temples from the state control.

“We should shun our small egos and embrace everyone,” Bhagwat said in a message to the Hindus. “As Hindus we must all try to remain united and use our power to remain together,” Bhagwat said.

“Everyone should understand that in this land we are all Hindus,” he reiterated.

500 kg of temple gold melted so far, TN tells Madras HC

The government had proposed to melt 2,137 kg of gold jewellery at the government mint in Mumbai into bars, which would then be deposited at nationalised banks.

In the wake of a chorus against the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department’s action to melt temple gold into bars and deposit them in banks, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday told the Madras High Court that such a gold monetisation scheme has existed for about 44 years.

Representing the State government, Advocate General R Shanmugasundaram submitted that certain persons were creating a furore over the gold monetisation scheme without realising it has existed since 1977.

“About 500 kg of gold has been melted into bars so far, and deposited at banks. This has earned Rs 11 crore through interest,” the A-G told a division bench comprising Justices R Mahadevan and Abdul Quddhose, when two petitions challenging the melting of gold came up for hearing.

Earlier, appearing for one of the petitioners, advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, said the devotees had no clue on the jewellery of the temples as no register was properly maintained by the department, though the court had issued an earlier order regarding the same.

The petitions, filed by M Saravanan and Gopalakrishnan, had sought to quash the September 9 G.O., and a circular dated September 22, citing that deprivation of precious temple property is a violation of the constitutional right to property under Article 300-A of Constitution. The petitions were posted to October 21. The government’s move to melt temple gold donated in the last 10 years has stirred up a controversy with right-wing outfits crying foul over the State’s intentions and its hold over the administration of temples.
