It is very interesting to see that Tamils knew many Avaratas of Lord Vishnu even before 2000 years ago. We have very clear evidence of Tri Vikrama Avatar in the Rig Veda. We have references to Matsya and Varaha Avataras as well in the Vedas. But Tri Vikrama (Vamana became Tri Vikrama ) measuring the Universe with His Three Steps captivated everyone and Andal of Tiruppavai, Tiru Valluvar of Tirukkural too sang about it. So do Krishna – Balarama Avatara. We find them in Sangam and later literature like Tiruk Kural.
Let us go into Sangam Literature:
Lord Vishnu is blue in colour; but he sleeps in milky ocean giving a beautiful contrast. He is on the Snake Bed which has 1000 heads with jewels. They are shining like flames; he is wearing Tulsi garland. He is having Yoga Nitra/ conscious sleep / அறிதுயில்.

Pari 3-68-72 repeats what Bhagavad Gita says
He is all; all is in him. He is born again and again (AVATARS); but no one make him born. He himself is born/ self born
Pari 15- 49/52 says he is born to help the living beings.

Boar Avatar- Varaha Avatara வராஹ அவதாரம்
Pari 2-16/19 describes Varaaha Avataara:
The earth was in water. Just to make the living beings appear on earth he took the earth out from the water. He did it by taking the shape of a boar. And so the era was called Varaaha Karpam. He brought the Bhuumaa Devi out on his horn so that the world would never suffer- Pari 2-32/33; 3-21/23; Pari.3-34/36
The task is similar to Meru Mountain – pari.4-22/24

Swan Avatar, அன்னம் அவதாரம்
Once upon a time the Seven Clouds poured down heavily and tried to destroy the world. Lord Vishnu took the shape of a giant Swan and dried them by fanning with its wings (Pari.3-25/26)

Tri Vikrama- Vaamana Avataara
வாமன / த்ரி விக்ரம அவதாரம்
To control the arrogance of the demon king Mahaa Bali, Lord Vishnu became a short Brahmin boy and went begging to King Bali. When the short Brahmin boy asked for three feet of Land the king laughed and said ‘granted’. But Lord Vishnu became A giant figure and measured the earth and sky with two steps and when he waited for the third step, King Bali himself offered his head. He pushed him down with his foot and King Bali went to Paataala Loka (may be South America or South East Asia). He was allowed to return once a year during Onam season.

All the Avatara stories are symbolic and they are talking about geological changes that happened millions of years ago. Mahabali story may be about Hindu migration to South East Asia or Mayan/Aztec South America
