Birth of Muruga
Paripatal poem 5 gives a detailed description about Muruga’s birth. Tripurantaka /Siva had union with his wife Uma and her foetus got divided into seven parts due to the interference of Indra . Actually ,the embryo or foetus was produced from the third eye of Lord Siva/Tripurantaka. Brahma received it and gave it to Indra, who could not handle it. So, he struck it with his weapon which got divided into seven parts. The seven parts were received by Sapta/ Seven Rishis. They gave it to their wives after processing them in Yaga fire . Arundhati, the chastest woman of Hindu literature, did not consume it. Other six women gave birth to six baby boys on lotus flowers in the beautiful pond in the Himalayas. Indra got angry and struck at six babies and they became one boy with six heads.

Paripatal 5 adds that Indra and his battalion got defeated in the war with Six Faced, 12 Handed Muruga. And the defeated Devas gave a memento each to Muruga. They are
Fire god /agni gave Cock
Indra gave Peacock
Yama gave Whit goat
And others also gave you and you hold the following 12 in your hands: Goat, Peacock, Cock, Bow, Tree, Sword, Spear, Axe, Trisula, Fire pot, Garland and Gem

திருமுருகாற்றுப்படை 1-9
“[All beings of the] world rejoice when the Sun, praised by many, rises shedding its rays over the eastern ocean and traverses [in clockwise direction] around the MahAmEru mountain [centre of the Universe]; likewise shines forth Lord Murugan’s splendour of light, that is seen not only by the external eyes of the Lord’s devotees from far, but also perceived by the inner vision of devotees with their eyelids closed.
முருகன் தோற்றம் – விளக்கம்
உலகம் உவப்ப வலன் ஏர்பு திரிதரு
பலர் புகழ் ஞாயிறு கடல் கண்டாஅங்கு,
ஓ அற இமைக்கும் சேண் விளங்கு அவிர் ஒளி,
உறுநர்த் தாங்கிய மதன் உடை நோன் தாள்,
செறுநர்த் தேய்த்த செல் உறழ் தடக் கை, 5

.”Lord Murugan is riding a male tusker, whose spotted forehead bears the scars made by the sharply-pointed-goad. The tusker’s forehead is well adorned with dangling wreaths of unfading blossoms [made of gold] and a fine frontal plate; when the death- wielding yaman-like-tusker walks rapidly like the blowing of strong wind, the bells hanging on either side produce tinkling sound alternately.
Lord Murugan’s sacred hair on the crowned-head is artistically arranged in five styles of thAmam, magudam, pathumam, kimpuri, and kOdagam, and adorned with gems-stones of contrasting colours, dazzling with the brightness of lightning. The finely- wrought golden magara-shaped-ear- rings of the Lord are dangling with a brightness like that of the stars that surround the lustrous moon which sheds its light even on distant earth. The effulgence of the Lord’s sacred faces is perceived by the minds of the sages who carry out their penances with faultless vow … “

What do the six faces do?
“One of the Lord’s sacred faces produces many sparkling splendours, so that the world, engulfed by darkignorance, may appear flawessly bright;
another sacred face of the Lord, praised by the Lord’s devotees, joyfully confers on them all the gracious favours requested by them;
another sacred face of the Lord ensures that sacrificial rituals of sages, conducted in accordance with true scriptures, are not disturbed by evil forces;
another sacred face of the Lord expounds to the sages such great truths which are not revealed by true scriptures, and enlightens their minds just as the moon shows all the directions of the world;
another sacred face of the Lord annihilates the demonic forces in battle, so that the sacrificial rituals may be held on the battle-field to celebrate the victory;
another sacred face of the Lord rejoices together with the hunter’s young daughter VaLLi-ammai of creeper-like-slender-waist [representing ichchA-sakthi] … “
