Ancient Tamils believed that some of the nymphs, spirits or ghosts are troublesome, bothersome, and annoying.
Even if you look at them, they will give you trouble. They are called Attacking Nymphs தாக்கு அணங்கு.
If it is not causing any trouble the Tamils considered them gods residing there. They even compared it to the Kinnaras in Puranas.

Attacking nymphs ,particularly ,attack young girls according to Sangam Tamil poets
கண்டார்க்குத் தாக்கு அணங்கு இக்காரிகை

Another name given to such spirits is சூர் Suur; they live in mountainous areas. Tamils believed that they even kill people. Even the mountain goats won’t touch the plants grown in such Suur inhabited areas in the hills.
“உருமும், சூரும், இரைதேர் அரவமும்,
வழுவின் வழாஅ விழுமம், அவர்
குழுமலை விடரகம், உடையவால் எனவே”

Mountain goats won’t eat the plants

KARAIKKAL AMMAIYAR
One man compares his lady love to Suurara Makalir (Suur Nymphs) who is not only a rare being but also troublesome
நேர்கொள் நெடுவரைக் கவாஅன்
சூரர் மகளிரின் பெறற்கு அரியோளே’ (௮௧.162:: 24-26),
‘சூரர மகளிரின் நின்ற நீ மற்று
யாரையோ? எம் அணங்கியோய்! உண்கு. (௮௧.32: 7-8).

Tamil men used such divine women to make vows or promises . A man holding his lady love’s hand and says I swear in the name of Suur Nymphs

One may be reminded of the great Saivite Woman Saint Karaikkal Ammaiyar (Madame of Karaikkal- previously French ruled territory in Tamil Nadu). When she got one mango fruit in a miraculous way, her husband refused to live with her saying she is a divine woman. Then she assumed the form of an ugly woman and called herself Peyaar= Miss Ghost.

DANCING BEAUTIES
Tamils gave us detailed description of the Suur Ladies’ appearance as well. They wear red colour Kanthal flowers and blue colour Kuvalai flowers on their hair and dance to the tune of thundering waterfalls.
“கடவுட் கற்சுனை அடை இறந்து அவிழ்ந்த
பறியாக் குவளை மலரொடு காந்தட்
குருதி ஒண்பூ உருகெழக் கட்டி,
பெருவரை அடுக்கம் பொற்பச் சூர்மகள்
அருவி இன் இயத்து ஆடும் நாடன்’ (நற்.34:1-5),

Tiru murugatrupadai gives us more details about their dance. They wear red sarees, and body full of jewels from head to foot. The scene is an enthralling one according to poet Nakkirar.
மால் வரை நிவந்த சேண் உயர் வெற்பில்
கிண்கிணி கவைஇய ஒண்செஞ் சீறடி,
கணைக்கால், வாங்கிய நுசுப்பின். பணைத்தோள்.
