GHOSTS WERE NOT GOOD LOOKING AND THEY WERE UGLY WITH BIG AND BLACK EYES ACCORDING TO SANGAM TAMIL LITERATURE. THEY RIDE ON OTHER GHOSTS. THEY WEAR LAMBS AS EAR RINGS.
A woman who has just given birth to a baby described herself ghost looking where as the prostitute her husband visiting was clean and beautiful-

Sangam Tamil poets described the ghosts in minute details.
The head of the ghost looked like aloe plant- Akam 130-4

EAR RINGS ARE SHEEP CUBS/ lambs
It is very interesting to read about their jewels. They wear cubs of sheep / lambs as ear rings

IRREGULAR CURVED TEETH
The teeth of the ghosts were of irregular length, and they looked like elephant tusks. It means curved and projecting outwardly. Puram 362, 371, sirupan 196. The teeth looked like the nails of elephants. Kurun.180

IT EVOKES SORROW AND FEAR
The feet of the ghosts were like dry and twisted pods of trees. It evokes sorrow and fear in all people who see them- Madurai 161-162; sirupan 197; pathit67-11; puram 371

Ghosts ride on other types of ghosts known as Kazuthu“கவைத் தலைப் பேய்மகள் கழுது ஊர்ந்து இயங்க” (பதிற். 13:15)

SUMMARY
Nakkeerar, famous Sangam poet and author of Tiru Murugaatruppadai , beautifully summarises all the above points in the following lines (TIRUMURUGATRUPPADAI LINES 4751
“உலறிய கதுப்பின், பிறழ் பல் பேழ்வாய்.
சுழல்லிழிப் பசுங்கண், குர்த்த நோக்கின்
கழல்கட் கூகையொடு கடும் பாம்பு தூங்கப்
பெருமுலை அலைககும் காதின், பிணர்மோட்டு,
உருகெழு செலவின், அஞ்சுவரு பேய்மகள் (முருகு. 47-51)
The fearsome devil-woman of dry hair and uneven teeth of large wide-open mouth, greenish eyes rolling with rage and cruel look and rough and uncouth belly, struts about frighteningly; her huge cave-like-ears, wherein live owls with bulging eyes and fierce snakes, which creep over her breasts, causing them pain; her thick-set- bangled-arms holding a black skull of foul smell with sockets empty of eye-balls scooped out by the sharp nails of blood-stained fingers, and with her shoulders heaving and mouth dripping with blood, she performs the thuNangkai-dance and sings the songs of victory over enemies in fair battles, striking great terror into the demonic hearts …” (Translation is used from Kaumaram)
Further descriptions in Sangam literature say they were generally short and they roam in the mid night.
