Durga is called Kotravai /கொற்றவை in Sangam Tami Literature. She was the goddess of dry and bushy area called.பாலை Paalai. The people who lived were called Maravar and they worshipped Godeess Durga alias Kotravai.
Her features are exactly similar to Durga in Sanskrit. Let us look at her in detail.
Nakkirar, famous poet of Sangam Age called Murugan/Skanda as son of Kotravai. So we can conclude one of Devi Uma’s forms is Kotravai/Durga

Her image also includes her weapon Soolam. Commentator Nachinarkiniar commented it as Tri Soolam (trident)
The trident in her hand was referred to by more than one poet.

The reason given is that she killed Mahisa Asuran with this.
Durga was called Vitorious war woman வெல் போர்க் கொற்றவை. This also confirms that Kotravai was Mahishaasuramardhani

Girls were bathing in the river. One of the girls put one red Tilak on another girls forehead and said this girl has Flame like eye of Kotravai

Hunters make bonfire with the wood sticks they gathered through elephants from the forest. Deer herds come and sleep there, but monkeys chase them and clear that area. புறம் 247- 1 / 4

Chera’s Deity
Chera Kings worshipped Goddess in Ayirai malai. This is similar to Vindhyavaasini- Goddess of Vindhya Mountains. Like Greek heroes wore Olive leaves, Tamil Heroes wore Vaakai flowers when they became victorious. Old commentators associate this with Durga. So she was the Deity of War Heroes

Blood and Meat
Raksha bandhan was also mentioned in Kurun.218
After worshipping goddess Durga they wore a Raksha thread in their hands. Even today Hindus wear this Yellow Thread called Kaappu (meaning Protection/ Guard) during religious rituals.
For Durga worship, the hunters offered blood and meat to her. Pathitruppathu, the collection of poems giving the history of Chera kings, described such ceremonies

Pandya’s wife Bhutapandyan Devi entered fire after her husbands death/ she did the Sati ceremony infront of Durga temples. Hunters made the fire with the fuel wood gathered by elepants.
