Part 5

Sarva praharaaayudhah – Word No.1000 in the VS

There is no rule that the Lordhas got only the above mentioned weapons. All things which can be used for contacting or striking are His weapons.

Brhan- naaradiiya 1-51-10 says,

Omkaaras ca’tha-sabdas ca dvaav etau brahmanah puraa

Kantham bhitvaa viniryaatau tasmaad mangalikaa vubbau

Meaning

Omkara and the sound Atha came out of Brahma’s mouth. They are both , therefore, cause of auspiciousness. Namah is added a the end  to indicate worship. The Veda says Bhuyisthaam te mama uktim vidhema- We offer you our  salutations again and again.

There are the following verses about the great merits attached to making salutations to Hari:

Dhanyam tad eva lagnam tan nakshatram tad eva punyam ahah

Karanasya ca  saa siddhir yatra Harih praang namaskritye

Meaning

Whatever Lagna (zodiacal sign)there is in which Hari is first saluted that indeed is blessed, that Nakshatra is blessed and that day is holy. That gives also fulfilment to the senses.

In this the word Praak (first) indicates also the end indirectly.  The fruit accruing from salutations is already give. Further

Eko’pi krshnasya krtah pranaamo

Dasa’svamedhaa vabhrthena tulyah

Dasa’svamedhi punareti janma

Krsna  pranaami na punarbhavaaya

-=-Mahabharata, Saanti Parva 47-91

Meaning

One prostration done to Sri Krishna is equal to ten Asvamedha sacrifices and the concluding baths. A man who performed ten Asvamedha sacrifices has to be born again but not so one who prostrates to Krishna.

Saanti parva 47-90 says,

Atasii-puspa- sankaasam pita-vaasasam acyutam

Ye namasyanti Govindam na tesam vidyate bhayam

Meaning

No fear overcomes one who salutes Govinda  who is ever without a fall , who wears a yellow cloth and who is blue in colour.

Loka trayaadhipatim apratima prabhaava

Misad pranamya  sirasa prabhavisnum iasm

Janmaantara-pralaya-kalpa-sahasra- jaata

Maasu prasaantim upayati narasya paapam

Meaning

If a man bows down his head in salutation to the Creator and Lord of all the three worlds who is endowed with limitless powers, the sins committed by him in innumerable past births  and numberless Kalpas are destroyed.

Daamodarah – Word No.367 in the VS

One who has very benevolent (Udaara) mind because of disciplines like self-control (Dama).

Brahmaanda Puraana 76-13-14 says,

Dadarsa c’aalpa dantaasyam, smita-haasam ca baalakam

Tayor Madhya-gatam baddham daamnaa gaadham tathodare

Tatas ca Damodarataam sa yayau  daama-bandhanaat

Meaning

The inhabitants of Gokula  saw the boy smiling with teeth, passing between tow trees  with the rope tied tightly round his waits. As He was thus tied up with he rope(Daama), He got the name Daamodarafrom that time.

There are the following verses of Vyaasa :

Daamaani loka-naamaani taani yasy’odaraantare

Tena daamodaro  devah sriidharah sri-samaasritah

Meaning

Dama means the worlds. He in whose abdomen these worlds have their existence, that Lord, known alsoas Sriinivaasa and Sriidhaara, is Daamodara.

My comments

The name Daamodara is the name of one of the Tamil poets in Puranaanuru, Part of Sanagam Tamil Works. That means Tamils had thee names 2000 years ago. We also find Kesava and Vishnu in Tamil poets names.

Vishnudaasan = Vinnandaayan in Tamil Sangam works

Daayankannan = Kannadaasan in Tamil Sangam works

Ksobhanah – Word No.374-

One who at the time of creation entered into Purusa and Prakruti and caused agitation.

Pravisya Ksobhayaamsa sarga kale vyayaa’vyayau

Meaning

The eternal Lord Hari , at the time of creation, entered at His own willthe changeful Prakriti and the changeless Purusa and created agitation in them.

(I have already explained that this is the Big Bang)

Havir-Harih – Word No.359-

Shankara in his commentary says, Hari can mean one who is blue in complexion. We know Krishna means black.

Krishna says

Haraami agham ca smartrnaam havir bhaagam kratusv’aham

Varnas ca hariih sresthas tasmaad harira ham smrtah

I destroy away the sins of those who remember Me. I  take away also the portion of rice in sacrifics. My complexion is the delightfully beautiful blue. I am therefore called Hari.

Atulah – Word or naamaa No.355

One who cannot be compared to anything else.

Svetaswatara Upanishad  4-19 says,

Na tasya pratimaa’sti yasya naama mahad yasah-

There is none equal to Paramatman whose name is most glorious.

Also the portion of rice in the sacrifices. My complexion is the delightfully beautiful blue. I am therefore called Hari.

Bhagavad Gita 11-43 says,

पितासि लोकस्य चराचरस्य
त्वमस्य पूज्यश्च गुरुर्गरीयान् |
 त्वत्समोऽस्त्यभ्यधिककुतोऽन्यो

pitāsi lokasya charācharasya
tvam asya pūjyaśh cha gurur garīyān
na tvat-samo ’sty abhyadhikaḥ kuto ’nyo
loka-traye ’py apratima-prabhāva

BG 11.43: You are the Father of the entire universe, of all moving and non-moving beings. You are the most deserving of worship and the Supreme Spiritual Master. When there is none equal to You in all the three worlds, then who can possibly be greater than You, O Possessor of incomparable power?

Krsnah – Word or naamaa No.550

One who is known as Krsna-dvaipayana. Says Vishnu Purana,

Ko hy anyah pundarikaaksanMahaabhaarata- krt bhavet!!

Meaning

Know that the Vyaasa known as Krsna dvaipaayana was the Lord Naaraayana Himself. Who except the lotus eyed Lord can produce a work like Mahaabhaarata?
