‘Mrtyu’ means death and ‘jaya’ means victory and this fire ritual is to .conquer death.. We have not seen anyone on earth who has defied death. All ascetics and saints have died; so here ‘conquering death’ means conquering untimely death, early death. Brhamins in their daily prayer recites a mantra asking for 100 year healthy life. So the meaning here is to live full life of 100 years. We request it from Lord Parameswara who is the Head of Department of Death and Destruction.
Another implied meaning is getting out of Birth and Death Cycle. Only when you are born you die. If you are not born again after reaching the feet of God , you don’t encounter death again. You have won over death permanently.

The most famous Mrtyunjaya Mantram in the Rudram of Yajur Veda clearly shows this. The simile of Cucumber fruit is used in that Mrtunjaya Mantra. Let me encounter the last moment like cucumber fruit is the simile used in the Mrtyunjaya Mantra. Cucumber fruit (Urvaaruka) never falls from top. It grows on ground or some flat surface. When it is big and ripe, the stem gets detached on its own. Nothing is damaged. It is a smooth Good Bye. Hindus are great botanists and watched every plant in the world. Adi Shnakara used four plants in one sloka! Dattareya in Bhagavata used several animals and plants as his teachers. We have to look at this homa with those things in the back ground.

Now let us look at the benefits and methods of doing the Homa.
No one wants fear of death looming over one’s head. This Homa prays for healthy and happy life until 100 years.
No disesase; No ICU admission in hospital; only happy and long life and the life should be finished like the cucumber fruit (detaching on its own without falling from the top) .

Punyaahavaachanam / purifying ceremony
Varuna is invoked in the holy metal pot filled with water. When it is finished water is sprinkled on the people; some is given for drinking.
Fire is kindled in the havan vessel/homa kunda with relevant mantra.

In the fire cooked rice with ghee is offered . Many stanzas from Rudram and other Suktas are used.
21 mantras are used , each 16 times, adding to a total of 336 six times.

Apaitu mrtyur amrutam …………………………
A request is sent to Lord Shiva to avoid untimely death.
A request is to sent to Lord Shiva for long and healthy life.
Arukam pul or Dhurva grass and Seenthil Kodi( Tinospora cordifolia) are required with Peepal (Ficus religiosa) wood sticks.
Following the main mantras, usual post Homa rituals are done to complete the Homa.

This homa is done only with the help of a priest. No one takes medicine without the advice and supervision of a doctor. And in the same way No Homa is done without the help of a priest. Mantra pronunciation is more important. Like 5 year MBBS course, Vedic Pundits have done a long course in Vedas and its Prayoga (Usage).
