 –

qián mén dǎ hǔ , hòu mén dǎ láng

1.     to beat a tiger from the front door, only to have a wolf come in at the back (idiom); fig. facing one problem after another

Japanese

Zenmon ni tora wo fusegi, komon yo okami  wo Susumu

The story for this proverb is

Kusunoki has just succeeded in crushing a powerful enemy of the Japanese

Emperor and restoring the latter to his throne , when another chief revolted. Realising that the situation is desperate, and there was no hope of his return in safety, Kusunoki departed to the battle. The prince of Mito set up a memorial stone to Kusunoki , and the epitaph, containing the proverb cited, was written by the naturalised Chinese scholar Shu Shin -sui.

The meaning is when one problem is sorted out another problem crops up.

This is very common in many of our works such as building work or health issues or family problems.

In English , we have Misfortunes never come singly

Bad things come in threes

Tamils also have equivalent proverbs,

ராமேஸ்வரம் போனாலும் சனீஸ்வரன் விடாது

Even when one goes to hoy place like Rameswaram evil planet Saturn/ Saneesvaran follow

There is a story about Sani and Siva Devotee

Planet Saturn/ Saniachcharan told a devotee of Lord Siva that he is going to catch him during Sani Disa (Hindu horoscope shows every one is affected by planet Saturn during one’s life time). He told him that he is a devotee of all powerful Siva and no one can catch him. Sani even told the exact time of his attack . The devotee hid himself for the whole period in the dirtiest place like a drainage thinking that Sani wont be able to find him there. After the attack time was over, Siva ‘s devotee came out and teased Sani,

Hey Saturn, I told you can’t catch me.

Saturn smiled and said,

Oh Ye All Powerful devotee . Where were you during Sani Disa period?

Oh now I can reveal the secret. I was in a place like a drainage.

Sani laughed and said, I made you to hide there. You let your beautiful palace like house or Siva Temple and spent your time at the worst place where only pigs roam.

The devotee was speechless.

It is like tackling tiger at  the front door  and letting in wolf through the back door .

உரல் போய் மத்தளத்தோட முறையிட்டது போல

As the mortar went to the tomtom with its complaints.

மத்தளம்= drum, tomtom ; beaten on both sides.

Used when one complains of his misfortunes to another who is in greater distress. The mortar is beaten at one end only, whereas the tomtom is beaten at both ends.
