A for Agastya

The name Agastya occurred nowhere in Sangam Tamil literature. Only the commentators like Nacchinarkiniyar give information about Agastya’s southward march and his clash with Tolkappiar alias  Truna Dumagni etc.

Kalidasa who lived before Sangam age gives the names of Agastya and Pandya together in his work Raghuvamsam.

Only one reference meaning saint of Pothikai hills is available in Sangam Tamil books. That too attributed to the star Canopus in the southern sky. That is known as Agastya Star.

Though we don’t have any reference to Saint Agastya Rishi, we have lot of legends about him. He diverted river Kaveri towards Tamil Nadu, he laid road route to south India via Vindhya mountain and he took Hindu culture to South East Asian countries. His statues are found throughout South East Asian countries. His statues are in western museums as well.

Six stars அறு மீன் கார்த்திகை Kartika or Krittika

Orion Constellation has got Thiruvathirai and Mrgaseersha. Aldebaran= Rohini.

Pleiades = Kartika or Krittika.

Pleiades is the astronomical name.

Akam 141; Tamils celebrated Kartikai Lamp Festival 2000 years ago. Enen today Hindus do this in Tamil Nadu and other parts of South India. Brahmins do celebrate it on a grander scale. They do decorate the whole house with Kolams/Rangolis and place lamp on it. They do it at least for three days They make Appam/sweet pan cake and Pori Urundai (sweet puffed rice balls made with jaggery. All the temples are illuminated with oil lamps and electric lamps. Pot makers make very good money by selling mud lamps. In the night time temples celebrate it with winter bonfire. The science behind the festival is that the insects that damage the crops fall in the bonfire and destroy themselves.. this is in Akananuru verse 141.

மழை கால் நீங்கிய மாக விசும்பில்

குறு முயல் மறு நிறம் கிளர, மதி நிறைந்து,

அறுமீன் சேரும் அகல் இருள் நடு நாள்;

கண்டிசின்-வாழியோ, குறுமகள்!-நுந்தை,

அறுமீன் பயந்த அறம் செய் திங்கள்

செல் சுடர் நெடுங் கொடி போல,               10

பல் பூங் கோங்கம் அணிந்த காடே.

In this Narrinai verse Kongam flowers in the forest are compared with  Kartikai stars . and the month is praised as holy month. Both these verses confirmed the Tamil’s belief in the sanctity of the month.

In Sanskrit Murugan’s name is Skanda and Kartikeya.

Divine Origin: Six divine sparks from Shiva’s body fell into a lake of reeds, forming six baby boys.

Nurturing by the Krittikas: The Krittikas, who were six celestial maidens, found the infants and raised them with great care. And the six stars are named after those foster mothers. Murugan also got the name from them – as Kartikeya.

90 percent of astronomical terms are derived from Sanskrit.

No Tamil name is available for 12 Tamil months. All the twelve months are Tamilised Sanskrit words

In the name of Seven Days of the week, except SANI/Saturn all other names are pure Tamil names.

Since we have got lot of Tamil and Sanskrit names for planets and stars, months and zodiac signs, the theory of Greek origin is not correct.

Tamils celebrated weddings on Rohini star day according to Akananuru verses 86 and 136. Sakatam used for Rohini star means cart. It is a Sanskrit word. All the zodiac sign names are also Sanskrit. only a few signs are original names.

Ominous Signs forecast King’s Death

In Puram verse 229, ominous signs in the sky forecast Chera king’s death. The report shows Tamils followed their northern brothers in naming the zodiac signs and stars. Look at the list below:

புறநானூறு பாடல் 229 கூடலூர் கிழார் என்னும் புலவரால் பாடப்பட்டது. ஒரு எரி நட்சத்திரம் (எரி கல்) தோன்றிய வுடன் சேர மன்னன் இறக்கப்போகிறானே என்று பயந்தார் புலவர். அதே போல ஒரே வாரத்தில் சேர மன்னன் யானைக் கட்சேய் மாந்தரஞ்சேரல் இரும்பொறை இறந்து விடுகிறான். உடனே கூடலூர்க் கிழார் பாடுகிறார் (புற.229)

கோனிக்ஸீ (KONIGSSEE – பவேரியா ஆல்ப்ஸில்  (BAVARIAN ALPS)

உள்ள அழகிய ஏரியும் காடும்

மேற்கு ஜெர்மனியில் உள்ள ஒரு அழகிய இடமான கோனிக்ஸீயைப் பார்க்க ஆயிரமாயிரம் பயணிகள் வருவது அதன் அபூர்வமான இயற்கை அழகைச் சுட்டிக் காட்டுகிறது.

 பவேரியா ஆல்ப்ஸின் கிழக்குக் கோடியிலிருந்து ஐந்து கிலோமீட்டரில் அமைந்துள்ளது இது.

அற்புதமான பிரம்மாண்டமான ஏரி. அதன் பின்னால் அடர்ந்த அழகிய காடு. சுண்ணாம்பு மலைச் சிகரங்கள். மலைச் சரிவுகள். பலவித மரங்கள். இப்படி ஒரு அழகிய காட்சியை வேறெங்கு உலகில் காண முடியும்?

 ஏரியில் செல்ல மின்மோட்டார்கள் உள்ள படகுகள் மட்டுமே அனுமதிக்கப்படுகின்றன. ஏனெனில் இங்குள்ள ஏரி நீரை யாரும் அசுத்தமாக்கக் கூடாது என்பதற்காக!

ஆயிரத்தி தொள்ளாயிரத்து எண்பதுகளில் 21 படகுகள் செலுத்தப்பட ஆரம்பித்தன. இப்போதோ அதிக படகுகள் செலுத்தப்படுகின்றன.

படகு சவாரி இரண்டு மணி நேரம் நீடிக்கும்.

ஏரியின் நீளம் ஐந்து மைல்கள். அகலம் ஒரு மைல்.

கோனிக்ஸீ என்றால் ஜெர்மானிய மொழியில் ராஜாவின் ஏரி என்று பொருள்.

 இங்கு ஏரிக்கரையில் ஒரு சின்ன மரவீடும் ஒரு மீன் பிடி படகும் உள்ளன. இதைப் பார்த்து ரசிப்பதில் பயணிகள் பரம ஆனந்தம் அடைகின்றனர்.

ஏரியில் செல்லும் போது ஒரு இடத்தில் படகு நிறுத்தப்பட்டு டிரம்பட் வாத்தியம் வாசிக்கப்படுகிறது. அதன் அற்புதமான எதிரொலியைக் கேட்டு பயணிகள் மகிழ்ச்சி அடைகின்றனர்.

ஏரியின் ஒரு மூலையில் ஒரு அழகிய வளைவு – விரிகுடா – உள்ளது. இது மாலர்விங்கல் (MALERWINKEL) என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இந்த வார்த்தைக்கான அர்த்தம்’ஓவியரின் மூலை’ என்பதாகும்.

 இந்த மாலர்விங்கலில் உள்ள சிகரத்தின் உயரம் 8900 அடியாகும்.

இந்த மலையடிவாரத்தில் ஒரு சின்ன ஆறு கரையில் மோதுகிறது.

 25000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இங்கிருந்த பனி அடுக்குகள் இந்த அழகிய ஏரியையும் சுற்றுப்புறத்தை உருவாக்கின என்பது வரலாறு.

 பத்தாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் இந்த  பனி அடுக்குகள் ஒரு ‘U’

வடிவமுள்ள அழகிய பள்ளத்தாக்கை உருவாக்கியது.

 பழைய காலத்தில் பவேரிய மன்னர்கள் மேற்கு ஜெர்மனியின் தென்கிழக்குப் பகுதியில் உள்ள இடத்தில் வேட்டையாடுவது வழக்கமாக இருந்தது. அரிய வகையான கோல்டன் ஈகிள் பறவையும் (aquila cbrysaetos) சிவப்பு மானும் வேட்டையாடப் படவே கோல்டன் ஈகிள் இனம் அருகிப் போனது. ஆனால் இங்குள்ள செழிப்பான மரங்களின் காரணமாக மான்கள் மட்டும் பத்து மடங்காகப் பெருகின. இப்போது கோல்டன் ஈகிளை இங்கு வளர்க்கவும் சிவப்பு மான்களைப் பாதுகாக்கவும் திட்டங்கள் தீட்டப்பட்டுள்ளன.

 தூரத்திலிருந்து பார்த்தால் மலை மட்டுமே காணப்படும்; ஆனல் நெருங்கி வந்தாலோ உலகின் வெறெங்கும் காணமுடியாத ஏரி, மலைச் சிகரங்கள், அடர்ந்த காடுகள் என அனைத்தையும் கண்டு களிக்கலாம்.

 அதனால் தான் உலகெங்கிலுமிருந்து பயணிகள் இந்த இடத்திற்கு வந்து கூடுகின்றனர்!

Ahalya (Painting)

Two thousand years ago there were beautiful paintings in Tirupparankundram temple near Madurai . There were paintings of sun and moon Rathi and Manmathan, Ahalya and Gautama Rishi. In that Ahalya painting there was a sneaky cat. A village woman was wonderstruck on seeing it and asked her husband about the cat in the picture. Then he explained that the cat is Indra who molested Ahalya, wife of Gautama Rishi. After knowing the offence, he cursed his wife to become a stone till Rama comes to the south. This shows that the Tamils were well versed with Puranic episodes and they were experts in paintings during  the Sangam period.

The dry leaf does not sink at once when it falls into the water.

Dead tree does not yield dew.

A sapless tree is a leafless tree.

The little tree that saved you from the buffalo, you turn and cut it for a post.

The bark of one tree will not adhere to another tree.

Meaning – the people of one tribe cannot assimilate the customs of another.

A tree is not twice struck by lightning.

Meaning- if you have to punish a person or a tribe, do it so thoroughly that it will not require to be done a second time.

If a dead tree falls, it carries it with a live one.

Meaning – if a criminal is punished, his innocent relations suffer as well.

If a tree trunk is not rotten, no fungus grows on it.

When a tree falls it leans on its neighbour.

He that is on one side does not have the tree fall on him.

A tree is brought into trouble by its own fruit.

The tree which has been too much for the baboon, the monkey cannot climb.

The wind does not uproot but the largest trees.

Where the trees are there are no builders.

4235. நான் இட்ட மருந்தும் போக ஒட்டாது நன்னாரி வேரும்
சாக ஒட்டாது.
The medicine I gave, as a charm, will not allow him to go; the sarasparilla, an ingredient, will not suffer him to die.

The proverb relates to charms, in which, as in magical arts generally, the Hindus in every part of India and Ceylon, have great faith. Servants have recourse to this device, and lovers also, for the purpose of influencing the affections and will of those whose favour or compliance they desiderate.
The usual method, as indicated in the proverb, is to administer the food of the party the ingredients that are fitted for the purpose contemplated; of course the preparation is surreptitiously added to the food of which it is known the individual is about to partake.
A gentleman of my acquaintance recently dismissed all his servant and took into his service a person in whom he appeared to place the greatest confidence. The neighbours and the discarded servant believe that the gentleman acted under a charm.
Some of the things used for certain purposes as charms, may not be mentioned here. The brain of a male child &c. is considered very(?) potent.
Professional magicians are employed when stolen property or buried treasure is sought. The magician uses a black preparation, a small quantity of which is placed on a betel leaf and put into the hands of an attendant boy, who is directed to look steadily at it, aided by the light of a lamp, while the magician invokes the presence and aid of certain deities. When the boy announces a phenomenon, say a tree, monkey or a dog or a goblin, he is told to do obeisance to(?) to encourage further discoveries. The earth may cleave as under(?) and reveal the thing wanted, or a scene, including a house and certain persons going and coming, water &c., may appear, when the boy proceeds to describe the objects before him, as an earthen pot, or bangle &e., &c., as the case may be.
To discover a thief among suspected persons sometimes dry grain as rice may be given to be eaten. The person whose mouth secretes no moisture for mastication is supposed to be the thief. –Rev.Percival

The carpenter who is acquainted with various sorts of wood, is not able to fell a tree.

4556. பலா உத்தமம், மா மத்திபம், பாதிரி அதமம்.
The jack tree is the best, the mango is good, the pathri tree is indifferent.
