Africa

The etymology of Africa is not satisfactorily explained or explored.

All the encyclopaedias give strange and distant words.

Here the commentators give one example

Aprikah – one who digs with a spade/axe.

If we look at the map of Africa , it looks like a spade

This is my explanation..

ஆப்ரிக்கா என்பதற்கு சரியான விளக்கம் ஏதுமில்லை; இங்கு ‘மண்வெட்டியால் வெட்டுபவன்’ என்று பொருள் வருகிறது.

ஆப்ரிக்காவை தேசப் பட புஸ்தகத்தில் பார்த்தாலும் மண்வெட்டி axe/spade போலத்தான் இருக்கிறது

It is called dhaardhabhakam –

It may be related to Tartaric Acid which is sweet and sour

தித்திக= புளி = இனிப்பான புளி = தித்திப்பு???

தார்த்தா பகம் = டார்ட்டாரிக் அமிலம்

‘உணவில் சுவையூட்டும் புளி’ என்பது உரைகாரர் விளக்கம்.

‘டார்ட்டாரிக் அமிலமும்’ அதே பணியைச் செய்கிறது.

இது ஒரு நீதி வெண்பா பாடலிலும் வருகிறது

நதிகடத்தல் அன்றியே நாயின்வால் பற்றி

Commentator gives another word

Plavikah – boat, float = padaku

நவுத்வ்ய = நாவிக

ப்லவ = படகு

Charathi – chalathi = sel in tamil

Commentator gives

Saakatikah – one who goes in a cart, vehicle

Kural used saakkaadu for saakatam

It is also symbol of rohini star and the word is used by sangam poets and varahamihira

சரதி = சலதி = செல்

சகடம் = வண்டி (உரைகாரர் கொடுத்த சொல்)

சாக்காடு = வண்டி (குறள் 475)

சகடம்/வண்டி ரோகிணி நக்ஷத்திரத்தின் அடையாளம். சங்க இலக்கியமும் வராஹமிஹிரரும் தமிழர்கள் ரோகிணி நக்ஷத்திரத்தில் கல்யாணம் கட்டியதை வருணிக்கின்றன ( எனது  பழைய கட்டுரைகளில் விவரம் உளது )
