Shakespeare was very familiar with India and its literature. But he may not have visited India. He would have heard a lot about India from travellers and books written by Roman and Greek authors.

I have already dealt with his reference to  Naga ratna (Cobra Ruby) and Miranda-Sakuntala comparison etc.

Here is one more proof where he mentions Surya Worship; it is similar to Vedic and later hymns such as Aditya Hrudaya of Valmiki Ramayana.

Lo,in the orient when the gracious light

Lifts up his burning head, each under ye

Doth homage to his news appearing sight

Serving with looks his sacred majesty;

And having climbed the steep-up heavenly hill,

Resembling strong youth in his middle age,

Yet mortal looks adore his beauty still

Attending on his golden pilgrimage;

But from highmost pitch, with weary car,

Like feeble age he reelth from the day,

The eyes, ‘fore duteous, now converted are

From his low tract, and look another way.

—-William Shakespeare

The point to be noted is the use of words Orient, Homage, Sacred and Pilgrimage . Any poet who sees sun can use red, golden, shining, bight etc. but the usage of homage, sacred and pilgrimage show the influence of Vedic literature on him.

Following is the English interpretation:

In the first twelve lines of this poem the speaker uses the metaphor of a rising and setting sun to describe the aging process. The speaker is trying to convince the listener, the Fair Youth, that it is in his best interests to have a child. Therefore, when the sun sets (he ages) his beauty will not be lost.

In the first lines, the speaker draws the listener’s attention to “the orient,” or the east. This is where the sun rises and the place to which all eyes are drawn. It is a glorious sight, just like the Fair Youth is. Everyone wants to look at “his sacred majesty”.

My Comments

Though Egyptians and Babylonians praise sun, we don’t see anything scientific there. But in the Vedas, we see many scientific facts. Above all, worshipping Sun stopped in Egypt at least 2000 years ago. But in India, Sun or Surya is worshipped until today from Vedic days. We see Sun Goddess in Japan and the very name of the country Nipon comes from Sun; but Sun is not worshipped there  as in India. In India we have sun Temples from Kashmir to Orissa and Sun Idols in all Tamil temples.

Rig Veda described the Solar eclipse. In one poem Indra stealing the Sun is described as Solar eclipse by western interpreters. In another hymn , Atri even says a Mantra and the Sun comes out immediately. That means he knew the totality of the solar eclipse. A total eclipse cant last for more than seven minutes That is the maximum. Atri surprised his disciples by bringing back the stolen Sun.

Other hymns are describing the reflection of sunlight on moon, 360 days, 12 Adityas etc. One again it shows that the Hindus knew the time taken by earth to go round the Sun and 12 zodiac signs etc.

Aditi is most ancient goddess in the world literature. Aditi means Infinity. She is the mother of all Gods including Adityas according to Rig Veda.

Aditya is derived from Aditi.

Shakespeare’s words in the sonnet Sacred, Homage, Pilgrimage can go only with the Hindu scriptures. If we accept the traditional date for the Vedas, at least before the beginning of Kali Yuga (3102 BCE) then all Egyptian and Babylonian references are relegated back.

Gayatri Mantra is found in all the four Vedas which  is nothing but glorification of the Sun. It is repeated by billion Hindus every day. Hindus are the only race who sees God as male, female (Gayatri) and genderless (Brahman).

Aditya is synonym for Number 12. In a conversation, if a Vedic priest says Vasu it is 8, Rudra it is 11 and Aditya, it is 12. It is their jargon. It means Hindus are the one who created Year with 360 +days, 12 Months etc.

(Since I have already given the references in my previous articles, I don’t quote much here).

Since Surya Namaskar is done 12 times every morning even by an illiterate, Sun worship forms an integral part of every Hindu. In astrology and Yajur Veda (Rudra mantra) sun is associated with Eye and general health (Aarogya Kaarah).

For Surya or Sun references in the Vedic literature, one may go to pages 465 to 468 in Vedic Index of Names and Subjects , Volume Two, by A A Macdonell and A B Keith.
