Kyaswaa (1234-1250 CE)
King Kyaswaa was one of the ablest monarchs of Pagan (now called Bagaan). A long edict issued by him in 1249 describes in gruesome detail of the various punishments to be inflicted for various types of crimes. He received the name Dharmaraja. He read the Tri Pitakas nine times over. He died at the age of 57 while playing sword and got injury.

Narathihapati (1254-87)
King Uzanaa left a son Thingathu by a queen; and this Narathihapati, by a concubine. Thingathu was not acceptable to the chief minister Yazaathinkyaan . once Thingathu was walking behind him and the chief minister did not notice him. Thingathu became angry and spat betel from his mouth on the sleeve of the chief minister. Yazaathinkyaan said nothing and went home. He preserved the jacket carefully without washing. When the king was dead, he summoned a large meeting of ministers and headmen and showed the soiled jacket in the meeting. All decided that the prince Thingathu was unfit to be the next king. All decided that concubine’s son Narathihapati should be the next king. He is also known by the name Taruphyi “ he who fled before the Taruks” (Mongols). He was a pompous glutton who boasted that he swallowed 300 dishes of curry daily and had 3000 concubines.
Some of his enemies revolted against his rule. Chief minister was sent to control them and the minister died at the age of 62. Fearing that his sons may also join the enemies he made them to live in the palace itself.
He ate together with them and used to distribute the food — a pig’s hind trotters to his son Thihathu and front trotters (foot of a pig) to elder sons. Thihathu’s mother took it as an insult and paid the cook to give her son a pig’s front trotter, leaving the hind trotters to the other queens’ sons. When the king found it, he punished the cook and constantly teased Thihathu “ son of a stealer of pig’s trotters”.
In the meantime, Mongols attacked Pagan and the victorious Kublai Khan demanded tribute through an ambassador. But Narathihapati sen Buddha’s tooth to Peking and asked him to worship it. Kublai Khan asked Narathihapati in a letter to send one of his brothers or one of the senior ministers.

The ambassadors who brought Kublai Khan’s letter refused to take of their shoes and Narathihapati ordered their immediate execution. Minister advised him not to kill the ambassadors which is against the protocol. But the king did not listen to his minister and killed the ambassadors. He did not stop there. He invaded the Burmese territories won by Kublai Khan. When those rulers asked Kublai Khan to protect them, he sent Tartar armies into Burma. Now Narathihapati had to run to delta area to save his life. At last he said that he would accept Kublai Khan’s sovereignty and was returning to his capital. On the way , he was murdered by one of his own sons.
The Pagan Dynasty which started its brilliant history with the accession of Aniruddha in 1044 CE came to an end after 250 years.
