Yesterday we looked at the verb GO= PO in Tamil

Today we will look at SOL= Say or Tell in English

Both GO and SAY are irregular verbs in Tamil. They don’t follow the rules followed by other 7 Classes of Verbs. That is why we call them irregular verbs.

xxxx

சொல் SOL

1.அவனிடம் சொல்லிவிட்டுப் போ =

Avandidam, Sollivittup Po

At him, say and go.

Avanidam= to him or on him (Locative)

Sollivittu = it is a compound verb with more meaning than SAY and GO.

VIITU is added to mean COMPLETE THE ACTION AND THEN GO TO THE NEXT ACTION.

Suppose I receive a telephone call while I am eating, then I will tell the person on the phone:

I am having dinner now SAPPITTU VITTU PHONE SEYKIREN= AFTER FINISHING EATING I WILL PHONE YOU. So the VITTU has more meaning.

2.நான் காலை 10 மணிக்கு விருந்து என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறேன் =

Naan, Kaalai 10 Manikku, Vurundhu, Endru, Solliirukkiren = I have said the feast is at 10 O’Clock in the morning.

விருந்து= VIRUNDHU= Feast;

என்று = That

காலை = KAALAI = Morning.

xxxx

Two things must be noted here:

10 Manikku = it is equivalent to AT  TEN O’clock in English; Like we add AT and O’Clock, Tamils add MANI + KKU with the specific hour , 1 to 12.

12 Mani+kku= At 12 O’clock

Second point is SOLLI+ IRUkkiren; this also a compound verb like SOLLI+ VITTU.

Here the meaning is HAVE or HAS.

3.நீ சொன்னால் அவன் வருவானா? =

SONN=AAL = Sonnaal

PON+AAL = PONAAL = If go

VANTH +AAL = Vanthaal = IF come

PESIN+ AAL = PESINAAL = IF TALK or IF SPEAK

You add AAL with the PAST STEM SONN, PON, VANTH,PESIN.

First person Past tense for these verbs are SONNEN, PONEN,VANTHEN, PESINEN

Please use my Conjugation chart posted previously.
