Where is Vaikom (old spelling Vaikam)?
Vaikom is a small town in Kottayam district of Kerala. It is famous for its Mahadeva Swami temple and Vaikaththu Ashtami festival where several thousands are fed.
What is Vaikom (Vaikam) Satyagraha?
During the Freedom Struggle, the Congress party leaders joined Mahatma Gandhi in demanding entry for all Hindus including Dalits/ Harijans into temples and approaching roads.
Who were the people warned by Gandhiji?
Christians and Sikhs wanted to exploit the situation and show it as Anti Hindu movement. Gandhiji warned them not to interfere in Hindu matters. He drove away Christians and asked to close the free kitchens of Sikhs. He never allowed any anti God fellows.
The local Christian leadership was alienated by a statement by Gandhi asking them to keep clear from ‘a Hindu affair’ (April, 1924).[4][17] Sikh Akali activists from Amritsar had also arrived at Vaikom to establish free food kitchens to the satyagrahis (April, 1924).[17] Gandhi called for the closure of the Sikh kitchens (from Wikipedia)
I have got a beautiful book titled
THE EPIC OF TRAVANCORE, MAHADEV DESAI, NAVAJIVAN KARYALAYA, AHMEDABAD, 1937
It requires reprint because it shows the Nambudiri Brahmins, C P Ramaswami Iyer, Narayana Guru, Menons and Nairs brought about a revolution in accepting low caste Hindus entry into the temple. At last, the historical proclamation was issued by the Ruler of Travancore. No where the so called Dravidian Ramaswami Nayakkar name is mentioned. One Dr M E Nayudu from Nagerkoil and Rajaji were the Vaikom heroes from Tamil Nadu. Hundreds of participants were mentioned except the so called Vaikam Hero. Everyone must read the book. It is also necessary to bring the book in Tamil. Gandhiji and Mahadev Desai who accompanied him clearly mentioned the names of all important participants.
First let me give an interesting episode narrated by Mahadev Desai in the book:

“We left Pune for Trivandrum on the tenth January. Gandhiji deliberately asked young Kanu, his grand nephew, to arm himself this time with Dilruba.
I slightly remonstrated. I said to Gandhiji:
You always object to our taking superfluous articles of luggage. Now it is my turn to object . Why add the Dilruba this time?
We have already added the carding bow and cotton. Why this musical instrument also ?
He smiled and said,
You are right. You may drop out the carding bow if you like, but not the Dilruba. this visit to Travancore is going to be a pilgrimage. We shall have to have Tulsi Ramayan reading everywhere and sometimes, if god wills it, at public places also, and we cannot get a Dilruba there.
I was silenced.
I saw that Gandhiji was already mentally preparing himself for the great pilgrimage” – Mahadeva Desai.
The above incident shows that all those who were associated with Gandhiji in this struggle were great supporters of Hinduism and so Dravidian Nayakkar wont fit into this struggle.
(I know Tamils even erected a statue in Vaikam; but that is nothing but a political gimmick)
In the second part of the article, I will give the names and organisations as told by Gandhiji and Mahadev Desai.

In fact, the great poet Bharati was the one who inspired all these people. He sang before 1921 Freedom to Paraiahs and Pualaiyas. The two words used in the book.
