GHOSTS IN THE MIDNIGHT, VEGGY FOOD, YADAV HOSPITALITY
Let us look at the last few verses of poet Mamular (MM),
Akam அக நானூறு poem 311 talk about bards getting elephants as gifts and the cowherds/ Yadavas offering tamarind rice to the travellers. Again chieftain Pulli is mentioned. cowherd community’s hospitality is to be noted. MM always talk about vegetarian food only. Here the poet gives two more interesting things-
1. The man entered the house when the guards failed to watch and had intercourse with the girl in the house. 2. That was the time when ghosts were roaming in the dark. Tamils believed that ghosts are going hither and thither until the sun comes out.

Mothers hate love marriages
Akam அக நானூறு 325 is about a man delaying his return and the woman’s worrying talk. In this verse, MM adds two more historical names. He says Athiyan was interested in direct participation in battles and so he gave the country to Allal and went away. Mother was guarding the girl all the time.
MM’s description of mothers’ watchful eye shows mothers did not like their girls running away with some unknown persons.

Flower vending girls
Akam அக நானூறு 331 gives us an interesting picture of bears climbing the branches of a tree and eating white flowers of Iluppai tree. Then the girls there gather the flowers in the holes of big bamboo sticks and sell them in the towns. We read about enterprising girls selling milk, salt and flowers and food as well. So, the ancient Tamils were earning money independently. Here MM mentioned Thithiyan, another chieftain.

Akam verse அக நானூறு 347 gives another picture. When the tiger attacked an elephant herd, the animals were separated. One female elephant was searching for its baby like a woman searching for her eloped daughter. How sad it is! MM added again the Cheralathan chopping the Totem Kadampa tree of the islanders and establishing his suzerainty

Akam verse அக நானூறு 349 gives us a simile of balance. The word used for balance is gneman ஞெமன்ன் தெரி கோல் in Tamil. Here we get a reference again to chieftain Nannan .

Akam verse அக நானூறு 359 mentioned again the chieftain Pulli and Chera king as Vaanavarampan , literally person with sky as the limit. It may be due to Kerala / Chera country is bound by the Western Ghats/Sahyadri and the sea. We also hear about the deforestation for farming. A town by name Veliyam is also mentioned. When the poets described the mountain, he used the epithet soorpukal adukkam meaning mountain is abode of divine beings or spirits or nymphs.வானவரம்பன் வெளியத்து அன்ன நம்; சூர் புகல் அடுக்கத்து;

Business trip beyond Venkatam
Mm ‘s last verse is Akam verse அக நானூறு 393.
A man takes a business trip beyond Venkatam, that is beyond Tamil Nadu and delays his trip. Here again we get details of veggy food . Travellers get rice pudding with milk . Pulli is mentioned again.
When the rice pudding is mentioned, some new plants are also mentioned
The poet described a pukka village scene with winnowing pan, grinding stone, mortar and pestle, oven made up with hard stones. A Tamil boy or any Indian reading this verse today, wouldn’t know what these things are. (I have used all these things in my home at Madurai 60 years ago!)
கோடு உயர் பிறங்கற் குன்று பல நீந்தி,
வேறு புலம் படர்ந்த வினை தரல் உள்ளத்து
ஆறு செல் வம்பலர் காய் பசி தீரிய,
முதைச் சுவற் கலித்த ஈர் இலை நெடுந் தோட்டுக்
கவைக் கதிர் வரகின் கால் தொகு பொங்கழி, . . .
கவட்டு அடிப் பொருத பல் சினை உதிர்வை
அகன் கண் பாறைச் செவ்வயின் தெறீஇ,
வரி அணி பணைத் தோள் வார் செவித் தன்னையர்
பண்ணை வெண் பழத்து அரிசி ஏய்ப்ப,
சுழல் மரம் சொலித்த சுளகு அலை வெண் காழ் . . . .
தொடி மாண் உலக்கை ஊழின் போக்கி,
உரல்முகம் காட்டிய சுரை நிறை கொள்ளை,
ஆங்கண் இருஞ் சுனை நீரொடு முகவா,
களி படு குழிசிக் கல் அடுப்பு ஏற்றி,
இணர் ததை கடுக்கை ஈண்டிய தாதின், . . . . [15]
குடவர் புழுக்கிய பொங்கு அவிழ்ப் புன்கம்,
மதர்வை நல் ஆன் பாலொடு, பகுக்கும்
நிரை பல குழீஇய நெடுமொழிப் புல்லி
தேன் தூங்கு உயர் வரை நல் நாட்டு உம்பர்,
வேங்கடம் இறந்தனர் ஆயினும், ஆண்டு அவர் . .
நீடலர் வாழி, தோழி! தோடு கொள்
உரு கெழு மஞ்ஞை ஒலி சீர் ஏய்ப்ப,
தகரம் மண்ணிய தண் நறு முச்சி,
புகர் இல் குவளைப் போதொடு தெரி இதழ்
வேனில் அதிரல் வேய்ந்த நின் . . . .
ஏமுறு புணர்ச்சி இன் துயில் மறந்தே.-அக நானூறு
