I visited Colombo Museum on 8th September, 2023 and spent there three hours. I took lot of pictures. It is good that they allow photography. My purpose of visit was to see Hindu artefacts and study the history of Hinduism in Sri Lanka . I think they have not displayed all the Gods’ statues and other Hindu symbols. But the beautiful Durga and Surya statues of Choza era welcome us. I saw all the lamps, musical instruments, bells, fans etc. But what surprised me was the flags displayed there with Hanuman, Peacock, Swan and Lion or Narasimha.

Though a brief history of Hinduism was displayed there I wish there is a full section for Ramayana Lanka and other Gods. Over 100 important Hindu temples are there in Sri Lanka. Government publication itself shows nearly 4000 Hindu temples ancient and modern.

Another interesting thing, I found in the Museum was impressions or replica of important inscriptions which are over 2000 years old.

There is  good scope for comparative studies in coins of India and Sri Lanka as well as the Brahmi inscriptions of India and Sri Lanka. The amazing thing is Brahmi script has travelled from Asoka’s Mauryan empire to Sri Lanka covering lakhs of square miles of Indian sub-continent. Later we found them all over Southeast Asia. A chronological study of such things will throw more light on History of India. I have already covered the similarities between Mahavamsa and Tamil literature in my research articles posted here.

I have given below some interesting pictures taken by me:-
