For thousands of years there has been a craze about the transmutation of lead and iron into gold. Hindu saints and researchers sang about it. Even the famous western scientists believed in the transmutation of metals and were frantically trying to find the secret.
This branch of science or pseudo-science is called Alchemy.

What does science say about alchemy or transmutation of base metals into gold?
Scientists believe it is not possible to change iron into gold. But the radio active elements such as Uranium and Plutonium
What does uranium finally become?
Uranium eventually decays to radium. Radium decays to release a radioactive gas called radon. Radon in underground uranium mines is a greater radiation hazard to miners than uranium.
Three stable lead nuclides are the end products of radioactive decay in the three natural decay series: uranium (decays to lead-206), thorium (decays to lead-208), and actinium (decays to lead-207)

We also read about Tamil saints Sambandar and Sundarar getting gold mysteriously.
But one person turned mercury into gold in the famous Hindu Temple in Delhi in the recent times.
On one of the walls of the Birla temple in New Delhi is engraved an unusual inscription . Delhi Birla Mandir is Lakshmi Narayan Temple and it is called Birla Mandir due to the big donationsto the temple.
Here’s a translation of how the inscription, in Hindi, described the incident.
The matter was published in Times of India newspaper in 2008 and in the Encyclopaedia of Indian Sciences in 2007 (for more on the subject Bhagwan Dash article in the book).

Mercury converted to gold in 1942 in India- proof
Inscription on Birla Mandir-Delhi
On 27/5/1942 in Birla House in presence of Shri A B Thakkar (PM, All India Hindu Sevak Sangh), Sri Duttji, secretary-Birla Mills, Delhi, Sri Khemka-Chief Engineer Sri Wilson etc, Pandit Krishnalala Sharma converted one tola mercury into 1 tola gold. It was done in Birla house, New Delhi
One Tola is approximately 12 grams.
Reetha fruit is Sapindus trifoliatus Linn (Soapnut)
He put mercury inside a shell of reetha fruit (soapnut) with some white and yellow powder (Jadi-booti) and it was closed with clay and this was put in hollow of earthen lamp and burnt for 45 minutes. On cooling and opening it, Gold was found! Similar inscription on Birla mandir-Varanasi:
In 1943, pandit Krishnapal Rasavaidya did it in Rishikesh in presence of Mahatma Gandhi’s P.A. Mahadev Desai, G.K Birla and others.
Mercury provided by Desai was converted into 18 KG of Gold!. This was donated to a trust which fetched Rs 72000! This experiment was repeated in presence of Pratap Singh of BHU.
Was this an example of alchemy or cold fusion and if yes, our ancestors knew more science than all world put together!
BARC former associate Mahadeva Srinivasan believes in this possibility and stated there was good work done at BARC on this till 1994 and then senior scientists killed this research! Cold fusion research is not getting funds in India but China, Russia and Japan are doing it. This process can mean one can create electricity in their homes and clean fuel will be produced without hazardous wastes.
According to Modern Science Mercury is the closest metal of Gold . Mercury’s atomic number is 80 and Gold’s atomic number is 79 .if we can remove only one atom from Mercury , scientifically Mercury will turn into Gold. Though it is not that simple I still wonder how did Hindus find out mercury and gold are so close thousands of year before Mendeleev’s Periodic Table.
Pandit Krishnalala Sharma learnt it from a saint in Haridwar named Narayana swami.
Even Kautilya’s Arthasastra which is 2400 year old says about gold produced by transmutation.
My mother told me an incident where a lightning strike made the cow dung into gold.at that time I was laughing as a science student. But the latest science talks about metals are created by transmutation in extreme hot supernova in the universe. So my mother may be right in her belief!

This is what Wikipedia says,
Most stars carry out transmutation through fusion reactions involving hydrogen and helium, while much larger stars are also capable of fusing heavier elements up to iron late in their evolution.
Elements heavier than iron, such as gold or lead, are created through elemental transmutations that can naturally occur in supernovae. One goal of alchemy, the transmutation of base substances into gold, is now known to be impossible by chemical means but possible by physical means. As stars begin to fuse heavier elements, substantially less energy is released from each fusion reaction. This continues until it reaches iron which is produced by an endothermic reaction consuming energy. No heavier element can be produced in such conditions.
