Haridwar is one of the Seven Holy Cities of India. It is in Uttarakhand state on the banks of holy Ganga. River Ganges enters the plains from the Himalayan Mountain.

In the Seven Holy Cities sloka/couplet it is called Maayaa, not Haridwar.

अयोध्या मथुरा माया काशी काञ्ची अवन्तिका ।  पुरी द्वारावती चैव सप्तैते मोक्षदायकाः Meaning: 1: Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya (Mayapuri or Haridwar), Kashi (Varanasi), Kanchi (Kanchipuram), Avantika (Ujjain) … 2: … and Dwaravati (Dwaraka); These seven cities are giver of Moksha (Liberation) (and are called Mokshapuri).

Haridwar is famous for its daily evening Ganga arti. It is the worship of River Ganga by showing Arti with lamps.

Haridwar means Gateway to Gods. Devotees go to famous Himalayan shrines of gods and goddesses from here.

Haridwar is famous for two festivals . World’s largest festival called Kumbh mela is held in Prayag every 12 years. In between Mini Kumbh melas are held in Haridwar, Ujjain and Nasik. It is celebrated once in four years in turn. Another festival that attracts millions of Shiv Bhaktas is Kanwar Yatra. Devotees of Shiva gather here in July- August every year to take holy water from Ganges in pots; they hang it on either side of a bamboo pole and walk miles to bathe Lord Shiva with that water.

Haridwar has many unique temples. Bharat Mata (bhaarat maathaa) temples is 180 ft high with 8 stories. It is dedicated to patriots, saints of India and Mother India. In the top three floors Goddess Shakti, Vishnu and Shiva are installed. Swami Sathya Mitrananada Giri built it and Prime minister Indira Gandhi opened it in 1983. It has got lifts to take the pilgrims upto the top f;;or.

The Purani history of Haridwar links it with Samudra Manthan. When the goody Devas and baddy Asuras churned the ocean, Amrit / elixir came out of it. Garuda/eagle stole some of it and the drops fell at four places and one of them is this holy city.

Har Ki Pauri

Har Ki Pauri is a famous ghat on the banks of river Ganga in Haridwar. Har ki Pauri is believed to be the place of exit of holy river Ganga from the mountains. Ganga Aarti takes place in Brahmakund area of Har ki Pauri, a sacred spot where it is believed that the nectar (Amrit) fell on earth. Largest fairs of Hindu’s, Kumbh and Ardh Kumbh also takes place at Har ki Pauri. Is a holy place for devotees of Shiva.

Mansa Devi Temple

Mansa Devi Temple is the  revered temple of Goddess Mansa Devi located at Bilwa Parvat near Haridwar. This temple is a holy place to worship Goddess Mansa, who is believed to be a form of Shakti, emerged from the mind of great Sage Kashyap. Mansa Devi temple is a famous Siddhpeeth and offers panoramic views of Haridwar city. She is considered a wish fulfilling goddess and whatever one wishes in Manas/mind, she fulfils it.

Chandi Devi Temple

Chandi Devi Temple is a holy temple located at a hill top, Neel Parvat near Haridwar. Goddess Chandi is the presiding diety of the temple and believed to be a Siddh Peeth where desires get fulfilled. An additional attraction is the rope way cable car to the top. One can have the view of entire city, holy river and the Himalayas. The pilgrims can reach both the temples located on the hilltop by the ropeway in around 5 minutes, while the steep climb by steps takes over One hour.

Patanjali Yogpeeth

Patanjali Yogpeeth is a medical and research institute in Yoga and Ayurveda. Established in 2006 by Yog Guru Ramdev, Patanjali Yogpeeth is named after Maharishi Patanjali who believed to be the inventor of Yoga.  Ayurveda treatment is offered  in hospital. All Patanjali medicines are available.

Ma Anandamayi Ashram

Ma Anandamayi Ashram is a spiritual place in Haridwar dedicated to Sri Ma Anandamayi, an eminent spiritual personality. She was a Bengali mystic and her Samadhi is in Kanhal nearby. Museum, Yagnasala,Rudraksha tree are other attractions.

Daksha Mahadev Temple

The ancient temple of Daksha Mahade, is situated in the south Kankhal town in Haridwar.A sacred place of great devotion and faith among Lord Shiva devotees, This temple of Lord Shiva is named after King Daksha Prajapati, father of Sati.There are many more places for nature lovers and adventure tourists.
