Adi Shankara says ,
Upendra : One born as the younger brother of Indra Or one who is greater than Indra. Harivamsa 2-19-46 says
Mam’opari yathendras tvam sthaapito gobhir isvarah
Upendra iti Krsna tvaam gaasyanti bhuvi devataah
The cows have established Thee superior to me as my master. Therefore, O Krishna, the Devas will sing about Thee, addressing Thee as Upendra.

My comments
Indra is in the names of millions of Indians. My friends’ names are Rajendran, Nagendran, Gagendran (My BBC Nepali colleague) etc. From Rajendra Prasad, First President of India to Narendra Modi, current PM of India, we have Indra in their names. Most famous Hindu speaker Swami Vivekananda’s birth name is Narendra. We find this name in several kings’ names including Mahendra Pallava (600 CE).
We find the word Indra throughout South East Asia. This is more common in Tamil speaking countries.

Dhananjayah -– Word No. in VS 660
Arjuna is called so because by his conquest of the kingdoms in the four quarters he acquired great wealth/Dhanam. Arjuna is a Vibhuuti, a glorious manifestation of the Lord, according to the statement in Giitaa 10-57
Paandavaanaam Dhananjayah- among the Pandavas, I am Dhananjaya .
My comments
It is a common name among Chettiyaars (Vaisyas/ business men ) in Tamil Nadu. Puranas about Madurai say that a Chettiyaar by name Dhananjayan travelling in night saw a mysterious light in the Kadamba Tree forest. When he watched secretly, he saw Devas under the leadership of Indra were worshipping a Shiva Linga. Very next day he reported to Pandya king and then he built a temple over the Linga and shifted his capital from nearby Manalur to Madurai. There came the world-famous Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswar Temple.
40 years ago, AA book of London , listed it among 100 wonders of the world. In 1987, I was walking along Tottenham Court Road in London and entered a book shop. When I browsed through the Automobile Association (AA) of Britain book, I was surprised to see my home town’s temple. Even today Dhanajaya’s statue can be seen in Madurai Temple. People mistook him for Arjuna. Actually, he was the Chettiyaar who discovered Madurai.

Guptah – Word No. in VS 545
One who is not an object of words, thought etc. katha Upanishad says 1-3-132
Esa sarvesu bhuutesu gudhotmaa na prakaasate—being hidden in all objects, this Atman does not shine.
My comments
Appar and other great saints also said it in Tamil hymns. He is like fire in the wood, butter in the milk etc.
Chitra gupta , Yama’s accountant, is not a man. It is the computer account of our thoughts and deeds ; Chitra= picture, Gupta= hidden. Whatever we do in our life time is recorded around us like Super computer which can do billion calculations every minute. So, when our soul appears before Yama, it shows our account. Depending upon our bank balance of Punya and Paapa, he sends us to heaven or Hell. Egyptians showed it in a different way. God takes one’s heart and weighs and decides.
But in Indian History Gupta dynasty is praised sky high as Golden Age of Indian History. Those Hindu kings ruled like Rama . Fa-hein , Chinese traveller, said no one locks the door in India during night time; there were no thieves. He visited India during Gupta rule. Gold coins were minted in lakhs. Now as soon as one enters British Museum in London (Numismatics Section), one can see beautiful gold coins of Guptas. They were great rulers and took Indian culture to distant lands. From 320 CE they ruled for 400 years.

Damodarah – Daman – – Word No. in VS 367
Dhaama- – Word No. in VS 211
One who has very benevolent – Udaara—mind because of disciplines like self control (Dama).
Then Shankara quotes from Udyoga Parva of Mahabharat with long explanation.
Dhaama- brilliance; Gita says ,
Param brahma param dhaama – the Brahman is the ultimate support.
My comments
Rudra daaman was a great king who ruled vast areas from Gujarat to Afghanistan. His Sanskrit inscription of 150 CE is very famous .
Daaman also means rope, conquering, taming.
2000 year old Sangam book Purananuru has a poet with this name (Damodara).
