Manu is god and god is Manu! Strange indeed. Vishnu Sahasrama (VS) calls God as Manu!
Manu Smriti is criticised by Anti Hindu gangs, because of forty objectionable Anti- Shudra slokas/couplets out of 2685 slokas. But we know they are interpolated couplets in the big book. My research shows it’s date is closer to Vedic period. It talks about running Sarasvati River . Foreign scholars also date it around 1250 BCE. Wikipedia says
Philologists Jones and Karl Wilhelm Friedrich Schlegel, in the 18th century, dated Manusmriti to around 1250 BCE and 1000 BCE respectively,
If one reads the entire book one would find out amazing things ( I have read it and written 60 articles in Tamil and English). He was one of the greatest thinkers of Vedic Age. Manu smriti is the oldest law book in the world; older than Hammurabi’s law.
The name Manu itself is a mystery. Hindus attribute each Manvantara an incredible huge number of years. ( I wrote about it ten years ago in this blog)
Manava is the surname for all those born in the clan of Manu;following names are found in the Rig Veda:
Saaryaata Maanava RV 10-92
Cakshu Maanava 9-52, 9-106-4
Naabaanedishta Maanava- 10-59, 10-61-62
Manu AApasa – 9-5, 9-106-7
Manu Vaivasvata – 8-5, 8-27-31
Manu Samvrana 9-49, 9-101-10
Manyu Tapasa – 10-67, 10-83,84
Manyu Vaisstha 9-29, 9-97-10
Maanya Maitravaruna – 8-67
14 Manus!
Hindus believe that the seventh Manu is ruling the universe now. That is why Hindus who do religious ceremonies, say In Vaivaswata manvantare– (at the time of Vaivaswata Manu) — in the Sankalpa.
So far the periods of six Manus
Swayambhuva
Svarocisha
Uttama
Tamasa
Raivata
Chaksusha
are over according to the Puranas!
Now we are in the period of Seventh Manu Vaivasvatha.
With this in the background, we have to look at the Manus in the VS.

Swayambhuh- Word No. 37 in the VS
Aadi Shankara says,
One who exists by Himself, uncaused by another. Says Manu 1-7 Sa eva swayamudbabhau- He manifested Himself. He is so called because He existed before everything and over everything. He is the supreme.
योऽसावतीन्द्रियग्राह्यः सूक्ष्मोऽव्यक्तः सनातनः ।
सर्वभूतमयोऽचिन्त्यः स एव स्वयमुद्बभौ ॥ ७ ॥
yo’sāvatīndriyagrāhyaḥ sūkṣmo’vyaktaḥ sanātanaḥ |
sarvabhūtamayo’cintyaḥ sa eva svayamudbabhau || 7 ||
He,—who is apprehended beyond the senses, who is subtle, unmanifest and eternal, absorbed in all created things and inconceivable,—appeared by himself. (7)

Aadi Shankara quotes in two more places.
Bhuur- buvah- svastaruh- Word No. 967 in the VS
The three Vyaahrutis- Bhuuh- bhuvah- svah- are said to be the essence of the Veda.

He is called Naaraayana also because He is the residence (ayana) of all beingsat the time of dissolution.
Says Manu 1-10

ता यदस्यायनं पूर्वं तेन नारायणः स्मृतः ॥ १० ॥

tā yadasyāyanaṃ pūrvaṃ tena nārāyaṇaḥ smṛtaḥ || 1-10 ||
Water is called ‘nara,’—water being the offspring of nara; since water was the first thing created by (or, the original residence of) that being, he is, on that account, described as ‘nārāyaṇa.’—(1-10) Manu Smrti.
