Let us continue with Adi Shankara’s (aadi Sankara) commentary on VS and compare it with the Tamil Veda Tirukkural.

Sumukhah- Word Number in the Vishnu Sahasranama (VS)-456

One who with a pleasant face.

(This is the name of Ganapathy and a mysterious king mentioned in Manu smriti). Or He who,  as Rama (raama), bore a pleasant and contented face even when exiled to the forest.

Valmiki Ramayana says,2-19-32

na ca asya mahatiim lakShmiim raajya naasho apakarShati |
loka kaantasya kaantatvam shiita rashmer iva kShapaa || 2-19-32

As Rama was a pleasing personality, he was loved by all the people. The loss of kingdom could not diminish such a great splendour of Rama as a night cannot diminish the splendour of the moon.

sarvo hyabhijanaH shriimaan shriimataH satyavaadinaH |
naalakshayat raamasya ki.nchidaakaaramaanane || 2-19-36

The people adjacent to Rama could not visualise any change in the face of Rama who was dignified and truthful in his words.

uchitam cha mahaabaahurna jahau harshhamaatmanaH |
shaaradaH samudiirNaa.nshushchandrasteja ivaatmajam || 2-19-37

Rama did not lose his natural joy, as an autumnal moon with lofty rays does not lose its natural splendour.

Another great Tamil poet Kamban said Rama’s face looed like a painting of Lotus that was bloomed on that day.

The ability to laugh at adversity, which is the best

Of all strategies ultimately to overcome it- kural 621

Another translation of the same couplet,

Smile, with patience, hopeful heart, in troublous hour;

Meet and so vanquish grief; nothing hath equal power.

English poet Carlyle said,

Wondrous is the spirit of cheerfulness

And its power of endurance

Suhrut- Word Number 460 in the VS

One who helps without looking for any return. In the

Bhagavad Gita Lord Krishna says I am your FRIEND (Suhrut)

gatir bharta prabhuh sakshi nivasah sharanam suhrit
prabhavah pralayah sthanam nidhanam bijam avyayam

BG 9.18: I am the Supreme Goal of all living beings, and I am also their Sustainer, Master, Witness, Abode, Shelter, and Friend. I am the Origin, End, and Resting Place of creation; I am the Repository and Eternal Seed.

And valluvar says

udukkai ilandhthavan kaipola aangkae
idukkan kalaivathaam natpu

Friendship hastens help in mishaps
Like hands picking up dress that slips.- Kural 788

Another version

As hand of him whose vesture slips away,
Friendship at once the coming grief will stay.

(True) friendship hastens to the rescue of the afflicted (as readily) as the hand of one whose garments loosened (before an assembly).

In the Bible the Proverbs 17,17 says,

A friend loveth at all times

And a brother is born for adversity.

XXXX

Samayajnah- Word Number 358 in the VS

One to whom the most worthy form of worship consists in the attitude of equality (SAMA).

We find this virtue in Bhagavd Gita and Tirukkural of Valluvar.

vidyā-vinaya-sampanne brāhmae gavi hastini
śhuni chaiva śhva-pāke cha paṇḍitā sama-darśhina

BG 5.18: The truly learned, with the eyes of divine knowledge, see with equal vision a Brahmin, a cow, an elephant, a dog, and a dog-eater.

Tiruvalluvar says,

To stand, like balance-rod that level hangs and rightly weighs,

With calm unbiassed equity of soul, is sages’ praise

Another version,

To hold the scales even and fair is the ornament

Of those, who seek perfection in their rectitude – 118

In one more couplet ,Valluvar says,

All men are born equal , but distinctions arise only on the basis of performance

In the respective occupations they they take on
