 Valluvar in Mauritius Island

Tirukkural written by Tiruvalluvar is called Tamil Veda i.e. Veda in Tamil by famous Tamil poets. It has 1330 couplets dealing with Virtue, Wealth and Love (Dharmaarthakaama in Sanskrit)  in three sections.it was dated around fifth century CE on linguistic basis. He has used Sanskrit words in at least 50 percent of the book. Not only over 600 Kurals have Sanskrit words but also all the 133 chapters have the Sanskrit word Adikaaram.

After Dravidians came to power in 1967, holy ash i.e. Vibhuti on his forehead was wiped out and his sacred thread on the shoulder was  covered with a towel by the Anti Hindu Dravidians. It is purely a Hindu book according to lot of scholars including Dr S M Diaz, former I G of Police. His two-volume English translation is one of the best books on Tirukkural.

The oft repeated cliché is that “it is not a religious book”  is wrong. One would laugh heartily if they read the whole book. No one except a vegetarian Hindu can call it a holy book. It advocates non killing and it praises God with form.

You can never see a Vegetarian Muslim; it is like buying a Hot Ice cream. There may be one person in ten million like Abdul Kalam, former President of India. He was a vegetarian cum Yogi born in a Muslim family. Majority of the Christians are also Non-Vegetarians.

Some half baked, so called scholars, put a Buddhist or Jainist seal on him. Again one would laugh at those people because Tiru Valluvar advocates violence against evil doers. Not only that he laughs at the Buddhists who eat non vegetarian dishes when the animals are killed by others. It is a known fact that even Buddhist monks in Sri Lanka eat non vegetarian food when the animal was killed by someone else. In Hong Kong and other places, piglets were offered in Buddhist temples. We know that all Hindus are not vegetarians, but they agree in principle that vegetarianism leads one closer to God.

God with Feet

The very first chapter gives Dravidians a severe blow because it praises God. And that GOD has holy feet in SEVEN out of TEN couplets. One couplet described Dharma Chakra God and Buddhists claimed it is Buddha. But Parimel Azakar, the greatest commentator rejected it.

So Tirukkural is only for Hindus who follow vegetarianism. The Third division of Tirukkural on Sex and Love may be acceptable for all religions. Even there Valluvar talks about Death Sentence, so Buddhists and Jains may reject it.

One lakh words in Sangam Tamil literature never mentioned the name of Buddha or Mahavira. But it is true that those religions existed in Tamil Nadu at that time. Valluvar mentioned EIGHT HINDU GODS and Brahmins, Yagas (Havan) , Dharma Artha Kama Moksha- the four Hindu values with positive connotations. He has one special section for Asceticism; if one calls it is not a religious book you can have a good laugh with that joker.

Many of his couplets are echoes of Hindu scriptures. It is not my comment. It is the conclusion of Reverend G U Pope, Dr SM Diaz, I G of Police, V N Ramachandran, Popley, Lazarus and Dr R Nagaswamy, one of the greatest Historians and Archaeologists to name a few. Instead of saying that Valluvar copied them we can say that he reemphasized what Hindus from Kanya kumari to Kashmir believed.

The very fact that he sings about Dharma Artha Kama in many couplets and the very fact that he named his book Dharma/Aram, Artha/Porul and Kama shows that he is a Hindutva person. He never named his book Tirukkural but he named Muppaal- Three Divisions- Dharma Artha Kama (three values in Hindu scriptures).

He used the Sanskrit cliché Dhaanam and Tavam together like Bhagavad Gita at least in two Couplets.

Last but not the least in Tiruvalluva Malai, appendix to Tirukkural majority of the 55 Tamil poets mentioned Veda (Marai in Tamil)  and three Hindu values and called it Tamil Veda. Tiruvalluvar’s name is Mathaanubangi according to one Tamil poet.

In the next section I will show how many Hindu Gods are mentioned, how many Vishnu Avatars are mentioned and how many ancient Tamil poets mentioned Vedas and Dharma Artha Kama with regard to this book.

(The author has written a Tamil book “From Valmiki to Valluvar” and he is one of the key persons in installing Valluvar Statue at the SOAS, University of London; he is the author of 120 Tamil and English books)
