In the part-9, posted yesterday we saw how Tiru Valluvar began his book with Sanskrit words and finished it with a Sanskrit word. We also learnt, being a great Sanskrit scholar, he used 500+++ Sanskrit words in 1330 couplets.
Since we knew he referred to Vedic gods Indra, Vishnu, Shiva, Brahma, Yama and Lakshmi, and particularly Vishnu’s avatars, in umpteen kurals/couplets, there is no doubt that he was a Hindutva Hindu. He openly supported death sentence and violence against evil doers.
Kurals 559, 1077, 1078 and 1224
From Lord Krishna to Bharatiyar, the greatest Tamil poet of Modern Age, all supported violence against evil doers. Mahatma Gandhi supported killing stary dogs, foraging monkeys and a suffering calf in his own Ashram. In the same way Valluvar also taught us violence.
In the chapter titled ‘Just Rule’ Valluvar says
The judge gives capital punishment to wicked killers like removing weeds from a flourishing field- 550
We know that a judge or a ruler incurs no sin even when he gives death sentence to 100 people. From Manu to Bharatiyar , all supported death sentence.

Valluvar supported violence even against misers!
The mean will not shake off what sticks to their hands to any but who would break their jaws with their clenched fists- 1077
And in the next couplet he talks about killing,
At a mere word the good melts, but the mean, like the sugarcane, yield only under crushing – 1078
Actually the Tamil word Valluvar used was ‘to kill’ and not ‘to crush’
And even in chapters dealing with sex and family life, he remembered a person being sent to gallows.
In the absence of my lover, evening approaches me like the hangman at the place of execution—1224
He used Hindu Pancha Tantra fables in lot of Kurals and here are a few:
Kurals – 273, 274, 277, 481, 500, 495, 633 etc
Dhaanam & Tavam (tapas in Sanskrit)-19, 295

Influence of Bhagavad Gita-
The parallel Kurals with the Gita Slokas are innumerable to quote. Rajaji, V R Dikshitar, recently Dr R Nagaswamy, Dr S M Diaz, I G of Police and many more have dealt with it.
Valluvar’s own concept of God is seen in many couplets/ Kurals -50, 260, 268, 294, 388, 413, 702
After my 60-year research in Tirukkural, I also conclude he was a great Hindu, well versed in Sanskrit and Vedic scriptures and in particular Bhagavad Gita.
For the first time in Tamil literature, he followed Gita in style and wordings; it is something like Yamakam-
ब्रह्मार्पणं ब्रह्म हविर्ब्रह्माग्नौ ब्रह्मणा हुतम् |
ब्रह्मैव तेन गन्तव्यं ब्रह्मकर्मसमाधिना || 4-24|| BG
brahmārpaṇaṁ brahma havir brahmāgnau brahmaṇā hutam
brahmaiva tena gantavyaṁ brahma-karma-samādhinā
and Vedic Mantra
ॐ पूर्णमदः पूर्णमिदं पूर्णात्पूर्णमुदच्यते ।
पूर्णस्य पूर्णमादाय पूर्णमेवावशिष्यते ॥
ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥ Vedic Mantra
Om Puurnnam-Adah Puurnnam-Idam Puurnnaat-Puurnnam-Udacyate |
Puurnnasya Puurnnam-Aadaaya Puurnnam-Eva-Avashissyate ||
Om Shaantih Shaantih Shaantih ||
In Kural
Thuppaarkkuth Thuppaaya Thuppaakkith Thuppaarkkuth
Thuppaaya Thoou Mazhai Kural 12
And
patruka patratraan patrinai appatraip
patruka patru vidaRku -Kural 350
The influence of Bhagavad Gita is seen in his Kural couplets and his style. So, I believe he was born and brought up as a Vaishnavite- so many references to Lakshmi, Vishnu, Krishna and Avatars (please see my earlier part where I dealt with Hindu Gods in Tamil Veda Tirukkural).
