Millions of Brahmins around the world says every day the following mantra in their thrice a day ritual called Sandhyaa vandana
आकाशात् पतितं तोयं यथा गच्छति सागरम् ।
सर्वदेवनमस्कारं केशवं प्रतिगच्छति ॥
ākāśāt patitaṃ toyaṃ yathā gacchati sāgaram ।
sarvadevanamaskāraṃ keśavaṃ pratigacchati ॥
Meaning:
As the water that falls down in rain from anywhere in the sky finally reaches the Ocean, the worship of any divine aspect ultimately reaches the Supreme Being.
If one is a Saivite they replace Vishnu with Lord Siva’s name.
This has been recited from Vedic days, at least for 5000 years. What does it show? Hindus knew sea very well. I am writing this because an American idiot has been writing Vedic Hindus never knew sea. The Vedic word Sindhu now translated as Sea meant only river or a lake according to that half -baked fellow. In Vedic days. But the Rig Veda sings about mighty ships and rescuing Bhujyu from the middle of the sea, when his ship caught in a storm; this is one of the miracles of Asvini Devas.
Viveka Chudamani (chuudaamani VC) says
यत्र प्रविष्टा विषयाः परेरिता
नदीप्रवाहा इव वारिराशौ ।
लिनन्ति सन्मात्रतया न विक्रियां
उत्पादयन्त्येष यतिर्विमुक्तः ॥ ४४१ ॥
yatra praviṣṭā viṣayāḥ pareritā
nadīpravāhā iva vārirāśau |
linanti sanmātratayā na vikriyāṃ
utpādayantyeṣa yatirvimuktaḥ || 441 ||
441. The Sannyasin in whom the sense-objects directed by others are engulfed like flowing rivers in the sea and produce no change, owing to his identity with the Existence Absolute, is indeed liberated.
Notes:
[Directed by others—i. e. which others thrust upon him. Whatever comes within his knowledge but strengthens his identity with Brahman. Compare Gita II. 70.]
And this is not new; Bhagavad Gita says,
आपूर्यमाणमचलप्रतिष्ठं
समुद्रमाप: प्रविशन्ति यद्वत् |
तद्वत्कामा यं प्रविशन्ति सर्वे
स शान्तिमाप्नोति न कामकामी || 70||
āpūryamāṇam achala-pratiṣhṭhaṁ
samudram āpaḥ praviśhanti yadvat
tadvat kāmā yaṁ praviśhanti sarve
sa śhāntim āpnoti na kāma-kāmī
āpūryamāṇam—filled from all sides; achala-pratiṣhṭham—undisturbed; samudram—ocean; āpaḥ—waters; praviśhanti—enter; yadvat—as; tadvat—likewise; kāmāḥ—desires; yam—whom; praviśhanti—enter; sarve—all; saḥ—that person; śhāntim—peace; āpnoti—attains; na—not; kāma-kāmī—one who strives to satisfy desires
apuryamanam achala-pratishtham
samudram apah pravishanti yadvat
tadvat kama yam pravishanti sarve
sa shantim apnoti na kama-kami
Translation
BG 2.70: Just as the ocean remains undisturbed by the incessant flow of waters from rivers merging into it, likewise the sage who is unmoved despite the flow of desirable objects all around him attains peace, and not the person who strives to satisfy desires.
Hindus also knew sea water evaporates and causes rain; that is also in many Tamil and Sanskrit poems.
Hindu Discovery
The Rig Veda poets, Sangam Literature Brahmin poet Paranar and many others wondered how the sea has not become full in spite of rivers entering sea every second. To wonder like this, they must have known hundreds of mighty rivers in India or the world; Even the oldest book in the world Rig Veda mentioned 30 plus rivers starting from Ganga. This gave severe blow to Max Muller gangs and Caldwell gangs. Because the rivers started from Ganga in the East and goes up to rivers of Afghanistan, all their Aryan Migration Theory were torpedoed. Moreover Indra is given the direction of the direction East. This also gave them asevere blow . To counter the American idiot, 90 references of sea are given by other scholars.
Adi Sankara also followed the Vedic poets and Bhagavad Gita and used this image. Sankara used more sea images in scores of slokas.

Kalidasa on Sea (from my old article)
Sea
Indians have noticed natural phenomena and wondered about them for ages. Thousands of rivers pour water into the sea for thousands of years and yet it has never filled and crossed its limits. The rain clouds take the water from the sea and pour it down around the world and yet the sea has not gone dry. This wonderful balancing struck their mind. Kalidasa used this simile in an apt place. Others followed him.
Kaliadasa praised Lord Rama’s sons Kusa and Lava for all the good work they did for the people and said that they remained within their respective geographical boundaries like the ocean that never crossed its boundaries though the rivers poured water in to it (Raghuvamsam 16-2).
Tamil poet Paranar said the same thing when he sang that the sea neither shrinks( because the clouds drink its waters), nor swells (because the rivers flow in to it). (Pathitruppathu Verse 45)
When the commentators wrote commentary to the Bhagavad Gita sloka 2-70 (Apuryamanam Achalaprathishtam samudra apa pravisanthi yathvathh——-), they also mentioned this fact of sea never crossing its limits.
Sea is used as a simile to express anything that is vast, big and huge. Kalidasa compared it to the vast powers of a king (Ragu 1-16), vast education (Ragu.3-28,30), big army (Ragu 7-54), powers of Ravana (Ragu 10-34),Knowledge (Ragu 18-4) and sea as a source of gems (Ragu 15-1, 15-55).
Tamil poets also used these similes in several places:
Love or amorous feelings and huge armies are compared to the sea. Ammuvan (Ainkuru.184; Akam 215;Puram 37,42,96,197,351,377) and Tiruvalluvar used this simile. Love as vast as sea says Valluvar (Kural 1137). His friendship is bigger than the sea says another poet (Nar.166, Akam 128), Kalidasa has sung about it in Raguvamsam when he described the great love of Rama towards Sita. (Ragu 12-66)
Sangam poets knew the Himalayas and the Ganga River. So, their references also become relevant.
