Through the realisation of one’s identity with Brahman, all the accumulated actions of a hundred crore of cycles come to nought, like the actions of dream-state on awakening –Viveka Chudamani Verse 447

 Tattva Jnanis Crush Karma

The Tattva Jnanis realize the Self;

The Gordian knot of Karma Past

They cut asunder;

Future Karmas they seize and crush,

By Grace of Siva,

Whom they hold,- Tirumanthiram of Tirumular

Great Tamil Saint Manikkavasagar.

சிவன் அவன் என் சிந்தையுள் நின்ற அதனால்,

அவன் அருளாலே அவன் தாள் வணங்கி,

Every one of us is born with a bank account; saints can look at your bank statement through their third eye; they pity on some people and help the people to clear their bad debts; others are advised to clear their debts by following some methods; if they have huge debts, saints give them strength to run their lives with debts.

The debts I mentioned above is the past bad Karma (bad actions in their previous births; it is called PRAARABDA KARMA)

Here is a story to clear bad debts:

Great Tamil Hindu saints like Alvars and Nayanmars say that one’s fate can be changed to good by God. Manikkavasagar, Andal, Tirumular,  Sambandar and Appar say it in very clear words that the previous Karma (action and reaction) will be powdered or  will be burnt to ashes. Hindus generally believe that Karma/action done by one will have definite after effect. Good Karma (action) will bring good things and bad karma will bring bad things to the doer. But one’s intense devotion to God can change one’s fate.

There is a short story to illustrate this point.

It is similar to Pusalar Nayanar story who built a temple mentally.

There was a poor man in a village. All his efforts to earn his livelihood failed miserably. One day his close friend asked him to see an astrologer in a nearby village. When he went to see him, the astrologer looked at his horoscope and was shocked. But he did not show it to the customer. He asked the poor man to come tomorrow, ‘if it is possible’. The poor man told the astrologer that he would come next day. Astrologer was laughing inside and pitied that man.

 When the villager was returning to his home town, heavy rains poured down. He ran to a dilapidated building and took shelter. To his surprise it was an ancient but disused temple. He felt very sorry to see the condition of the temple. Various thoughts ran into his mind. He thought, “If I win a lottery prize tomorrow, first I will build a huge hall and then I will build a tall tower on top of it. Then I will install the golden statues of the gods inside and celebrate the consecration. If there is money, I will do Anna Dhanam to all the poor people (Anna Dhanam= Food donation). When the rain stopped, he returned home and felt very happy. He slept thinking of the temple.

Next day he went back to the astrologer according to the plan. The astrologer was greatly surprised to see him. He asked what he did in the past 24 hours. he said that he went back home after taking shelter in the huge rain previous night. The astrologer was not satisfied with his answer; so he asked to relate minute by minute account. Then he told the astrologer he stayed in a temple. Even then astrologer wasn’t satisfied. He asked him whether anything happened like seeing a holy man or any miracle. The poor man said, N I was only thinking about renovating the temple.

At the point the astrologer got a grip over the matter and asked the poor man about everything he thought. Then the astrologer realised that he built a golden temple in his mind and that only saved him, because according to his horoscope he should have died already. That is why the astrologer told him the first place “to come tomorrow, if possible”.

Then the astrologer explained to him everything that should have happened to him astrologically, but God changed his fate. Even Yama would fail in his arithmetic if God interferes!

 One can change his bad days into good days with good thoughts.

 Purity in mind, word and deed (Three way purity= Mano, Vak, Kayam) is called Tri Karana suddhi. If one has it permanently one can do miracles.

Aadi Sankara says in his Viveka Chuudaamani (VC):

प्रारब्धं पुष्यति वपुरिति निश्चित्य निश्चलः ।
धैर्यमालम्ब्य यत्नेन स्वाध्यासापनयं कुरु ॥ २७९ ॥

prārabdhaṃ puṣyati vapuriti niścitya niścalaḥ |
dhairyamālambya yatnena svādhyāsāpanayaṃ kuru || 279 ||

279. Knowing for certain that the Prārabdha work will maintain this body, remain quiet and do away with thy superimposition carefully and with patience.

https://www.wisdomlib.org/hinduism/book/vivekachudamani/d/doc144756.html

Notes:

[Prarabdha—the resultant of past Karma that has led to the present birth. When this is worked out, the body falls, and Videhamukti is the result.]

निदिध्यासनशीलस्य बाह्यप्रत्यय ईक्ष्यते ।
ब्रवीति श्रुतिरेतस्य प्रारब्धं फलदर्शनात् ॥ ४४५ ॥

nididhyāsanaśīlasya bāhyapratyaya īkṣyate |
bravīti śrutiretasya prārabdhaṃ phaladarśanāt || 445 ||

445. One who is constantly practising meditation is observed to have external perceptions. The Śrutis mention Prārabdha work in the case of such a man, and we can infer this from results actually seen.

Notes:

[External perceptions—such as satisfying the physical needs or teaching enquirers etc.

Srutis &c.—The reference is to Chhandogya. Upanishad VI. xiv. 2, “Thedelay in his (i. e. a Jnanin’s) case is only so long as his body lasts,, after which, he becomes one with Brahmam”

Prarabdha work—is the work done in. past lives which has engendered the present body (referred to in Sloka 451). The other two kinds of work are the ‘Sanchita’ or accumulated (mentioned in Sloka 447) and the ‘Agámi’ or forthcoming (mentioned in Sloka 449).

Results &c.—the continuance of the body after realisation, and its experiences during that period can only be explained by assuming that the Prárabdha continues to work. This is further explained in the next Sloka. ]

sukhādyanubhavo yāvattāvatprārabdhamiṣyate |
phalodayaḥ kriyāpūrvo niṣkriyo na hi kutracit || 446 ||

446. Prārabdha work is acknowledged to persist so long as there is the perception of happiness and the like. Every result is preceded by an action, and nowhere is it seen to accrue independently of action.

447. Through the realisation of one’s identity with Brahman, all the accumulated actions of a hundred crore of cycles come to nought, like the actions of dream-state on awakening.

yatkṛtaṃ svapnavelāyāṃ puṇyaṃ vā pāpamulbaṇam |
suptotthitasya kiṃ tatsyātsvargāya narakāya vā || 448 ||

448. Can the good actions or dreadful sins that a man fancies himself doing in the dream-state, lead him to heaven or hell after he has awakened from sleep?

दृश्यं प्रतीतं प्रविलापयन्सन्
सन्मात्रमानन्दघनं विभावयन् ।

320. Causing the external and internal universe, which are now perceived, to vanish, and meditating on the Reality, the Bliss Embodied, one should pass one’s time watchfully, if there be any residue of Prārabdha work left.

Notes:

[External and internal universes—the worlds of matter and thought. The former exists outside of man, whereas the latter he himself creates by the power of thought.

Causing……to vanish—through the eliminating

process, ‘Neti, Neti—Brahman is not this, not this, etc. ]

 How They Deal With Karma

If Karma from past

Overtakes them,

They exterminate them,

Patiently experiencing them;

But they see,

Future Karma is created not;

They realize the Self,

They are Jnanis,

That have Tattvas cognised;

They train senses five,

In ways goodly.

 No Karma, if Thought and Word are Consistent

Through thought, word and deed

Karmas accumulate;

If thought and word consistent stand

Karma bides not;

Thought and word conquering,

They experience Karmas,

And alter their course,

They the great Jnanis are.
