 Himalayas: From Rig Veda to Tamil Poet Bharati- Part 5 (Last Part)-Post 13,585

Last Part

Manikkavasagar was one of the Four ancient Saivite saints; all of them lived at least 1000 years ago. But my research shows that he lived just before Mahendra Pallavan (600 CE) time. Appar and Sambandhar were contemporaries of the great Pallava Eemperor.  Manikkavasagar never mentioned Siva Linga or Lord Ganesh or the three great Saivite saints. Probably he was the first one to mention Panchakshara Mantra Om Nama Sivaya. Moreover, he used different genres available in Tamil literature; above all Appar mentioned the miracle of Horse changing to Fox episode from Manikavasagar’s life.

Kailash is mentioned in at least seven places

3.கயிலை புகுநெறி — அருட்பத்து பாடல் 465

4.மானக் கயிலை மலையாய் போற்றி  4-167

This is the interesting reference. A lot of Tamils repeat the previous two lines in religious gatherings and mislead the public.

தென்னாட்டுடைய சிவனே போற்றி

எந்நாட்டவர்க்கும் இறைவா போற்றி

Siva Lord of the southern country- praise

King of our country folk – praise

The next line is மானக் கயிலை மலையாய் போற்றி 4-167 meaning Lord of glorious Kailash – praise

Many half-baked scholars in Tamil Nadu thought and taught others  that Siva belongs to Tamil Nadu; but Manikavasagar is very clear and says He is the Lord of all countries and the Lord of the Himalayan Kailash. There is another point. From Sangam Tamil book Pura Nanuru to Tamil poet Bharati, we see the one Nation concept from the Himalayas to Kanyakumari, exploding the myth of British uniting India. Of course, they laid roads and railway lines to pump out all Indian treasures to England. Recent books estimate that they pumped out billions of pounds worth from India.

My comments

Though Manikavasagar refers to the Sea of Mercy, there is a geological fact as well; Millions of years ago, Himalayas were under the sea according to geologists.

அயில்வாய சூலமும், காபால(ம்)மும், அமரும் திருக்கரத்தார்; ஆன் ஏறு ஏறி,

வெயில் ஆய சோதி விளங்கும் நீற்றார் வீழிமிழலையே மேவினாரே.

He is of mount kaliash , kaaronam, kandamathanam

Kalthi, Mayiladuthurai, Maakaalam

And Vakkarai ; He gifted the disc to Vishnu

Bharati Poems

Glorifying the Holy Himalayas continued in Tamil up to period of the great poet Subrahmanya Bharati. He was the only one poet in Tamil who dealt with Hinduism, Patriotism (Nationalism), Women’s Liberation and Tamil Language. If we take any other poet before Bharati, she or he will be lacking in one or two aspects. Bharati’s songs are used in Tamil Films and Music concerts until this day and so they reached even illiterates. He praised the Himalayas in the following songs :

பாரதி பாடல்களில் இமயம்

5. பாரத தேசம்

We will saunter over the silvery Himalayas

And sail our ships all over the western sea

W will make temples of our schools everywhere

And stroke our shoulders proclaiming Our Bharat

ராகம் – புன்னாகவராளி

பல்லவி

பாரத தேசமென்று பெயர்சொல்லு வார் – மிடிப்

பயங்கொல்லு வார்துயர்ப் பகைவெல்லு வார்.

சரணங்கள்

வெள்ளிப் பனிமலையின் மீதுலவு வோம் – அடி

மேலைக் கடல்முழுதும் கப்பல் விடுவோம்

பள்ளித் தலமனைத்தும் கோயில் செய்கு வோம், எங்கள்

பாரத தேசமென்று தோள்கொட்டுவோம். (பாரத)

Himachal is our mountain

The world hath not its fellow;

Ganga is our fountain

Pellucid, sweet and mellow

Our Upanishads are twelve

Unknown to any other clime

deep into our minds they delve

Praise we Bharat , golden fair

Our own dear land beyond compare.

தேனார் மொழிக்கிள்ளாய் தேவியெனக் கானந்த
