Great Tamil poets from Appar 600 CE to Bharati (died in 1921) challenge God of Death. Since they were worshippers of Lord Siva and His son Skanda, they didn;t fear death. They knew what happened to Yama Dharman when he came to take the like of teenage boy Markandeya. Even Tiru Valluvar mentioned it in his Tamil Veda Tirukkural.

Tirumular and Arunagiri say they will cut Yama with the sword of wisdom. Bharati is the boldest of the poets, who says, Hey! come near me. I will crush you like the weeds. Here are some poems in English and Tamil:

Tamil Poet Bharati challenges Yamaa!

Kaalaa (Death)! I spurn  as a piece of weed!

Come here. Let me crush you—Ha, Ha!

I meditate on the Vedic singers,

Velaayutaa (Skanda) guards the fort of my mind.

Do you forget what befell the crocodile

When Gajendra invoked the Lord?

Death (Kaalaa)! I spurn you…..

Failed you not when Markandeya

Fleeing from you, sought Siva’s refuge?

A thousand miles away, I order you

I confront you as Hari, himself!

Death (Kaalaa)! I spurn you…..

சரணங்கள்

1. வேலாயுத விருதினை மனதிற் மதிக்கிறேன்;என்றன்

      வேதாந்த முரைத்த ஞானியர் தமை யெண்ணித்

[துதிக்கிறேன்-ஆதி

மூலா வென்று கதறிய யானையைக் காக்கவே-நின்றன்

      முதலைக்கு நேர்ந்ததை மறந்தாயோ கெட்ட,

[மூடனே?அட (காலா)

2. ஆலாலமுண்டவனடி சரணென்ற மார்க்கண்டன்-தன

      தாவி கவரப்போய் நீ பட்ட பாட்டினை

[யறிகுவேன்-இங்கு

நாலாயிரம் காதம் விட்டகல்!உனைவிதிக்கிறேன்-ஹரி

      நாராயண னாகநின் முன்னே உதிக்கிறேன்-அட

Tirumular warns Yama

I will use Wisdom Sword and cut Yama into pieces- Tirumular

 Their Thought Power

If God of Death comes,

I shall smite him with Sword of Jnana,

If Siva comes,

I am sure to go with Him;

Long back had I sundered Karma,

To birth leads;

Who can stand against Thought,

Of intense devotion born?

2927. நமன்வரின் ஞானவாள் கொண்டே எறிவன்

சிவன்வரின் நானுடன் போவது திண்ணம்

பவம்வரும் வல்வினை பண்டே யறுத்தேன்

தவம்வருஞ் சிந்தைக்குத் தானெதிராரே. – திருமூலர்

Tamil Veda author Tiru Valluvar says One can defeat Yama, like the teen age boy Markandeya

Ancient commentator of Tirukkural/ Tamil Veda says it is a reference to Markandeya Purana.

Those who have achieved the strength of penance

Could defat even the Lord of death- Kural 269

Or

Those who have acquired strength through asceticism have the power of overcoming death- 269

Or

The E’en over death the victory he may gain,

If power by penance won his soul obtain.- 269

Couplet Explanation:

Those who have attained the power which religious discipline confers, will be able also to pass the limit of Yama, (the God of death).-269

ஆற்றல் தலைப்பட் டவர்க்குல்.–குறள் 269

We are subject to none; we fear not Death; we will not

Suffer in hell; we are without falsity; we will ever be glad;

We know no illness; we do not bow; with us joy abides

For ever; never will we suffer sorrow; know what we are

The Bondsman – never to be manumitted..of Sankara

Who wears in one ear the Kuzhai of pure white shell

The Sovereign who is subject to none; Ha, we have

Attained His roseate flower fresh feet twain

  நாமார்க்கும் குடியல்லோம் நமனை அஞ்சோம்

நரகத்தில் இடர்ப்படோம் நடலை இல்லோம்

       ஏமாப்போம் பிணி அறியோம் பணிவோம் அல்லோம்

இன்பமே எந்நாளும் துன்பம் இல்லை

       தாமார்க்கும் குடியல்லாத் தன்மையான சங்கரன்

நற்சங்க வெண் குழை ஓர் காதில்

       கோமாற்கே நாம் என்றும் மீளா ஆளாய்க் கொய்ம்

மலர்ச் சேவடி குறுகினோமே- அப்பர் தேவாரம் – அப்பர்

தந்தைக்கு முன்னந் தனிஞான வாளொன்று சாதித்தருள்

   கந்தச் சுவாமி யெனைத்தேற் றியபின்னர்க் காலன் வெம்பி

      வந்திப் பொழுதென்னை யென்செய்ய லாஞ்சத்தி வாளொன்றினாற்

         சிந்தத் துணிப்பன் தணிப்பருங் கோபத்ரி சூலத்தையே. 69

வேலா யுதன்சங்கு சக்ராயு தன்விரிஞ் சன்னறியாச்

   சூலா யுதன் தந்த கந்தச் சுவாமி சுடர்க்குடுமிக்

      காலா யுதக்கொடி யோனரு ளாய கவசமுண்டென்

         பாலா யுதம்வரு மோயம னோடு பகைக்கினுமே.   …    86

குமரா சரணஞ் சரணமென் றண்டர் குழாந்துதிக்கும்

   அமரா வதியிற் பெருமாள் திருமுக மாறுங்கண்ட

      தமராகி வைகுந் தனியான ஞான தபோதனர்க்கிங்

         கெமராசன் விட்ட கடையேடு வந்தினி யென்செயுமே.- கந்தர் அலங்காரம்
