Story for the proverb
In 500 CE, Prime Minister Gao Yang dethroned Emperor Xiaojiang declared himself Emperor
Wenxuman . he eliminated many officials , and relatives of the ryal house were killed. Yuan Jingan, magistrate of Dinxiang County , who was afraid to be killed, requested his name to be changed Gao , so as to please Emperor Wenxuman.
His cousin said to him
How could you abandon the name of your ancestor and adopt the name of another man ?
A hero woud rather be a brokne jade than a whole tile. Yuan jingan reported it to Gao Yang . His cousin was put to death and he was rewarded and promoted.
