Talk by DR Shib Narayan Sen, Editor, Truth Weekly Magazine, Kolkata on 10th November, 2024 on Gnanamayam Broadcast from London via Zoom.
Bengaluru S Nagarajan, regular contributor for Gnanamayam Broadcast, introduced Dr Shib Narayan Sen.
London Swaminathan said in his introduction about two amazing facts: Truth is published for over 90 years; and Bengaluru Nagarajan has over 2000 Truth Issues in his collection.

And then Dr Shib Narayan Sen spoke,
“ Sri Sri Hari Sharanam
My namaskaram to all of you. I am grateful to Sri London Swaminathan Sir and Sri Santhanam Nagarajan for providing me this opportunity to be amongst you and participate in this pious programme.
The subject for discussion today is “Hindu Dharma is the only Dharma – Why?”
In fact, many so called educated people forget the distinction between Dharma and Religion and complain that dharma is behind the cause of war and bloodshed. Religion means some theistic people living together to worship the Supreme. The process of worship are different but this is not Dharma. Man is first known by himself through realization. Then this realization will help to realize others and this is ‘Dharma’ (Realization means that ‘I’ am the soul immortal and not simply the mortal body). Mazhab or religion is thus different from Dharma. Atmanam biddhi – Know thyself and see Paramatma in all beings – Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma – Almighty pervades everything. This is the essence of dharma.
Our Revered Founder Srimat Sri Upendramohanin his book, ‘Hindu Dharma is the only Dharma – Why?’, wrote – “In the whole world there is no Dharma except Hindu Dharma. There are many religions, but they are religions only and not Dharma. What is then the difference between religion and Dharma? That will be presently shown in the briefest compass possible.”

All these points deserve a discussion in detail, point wise. Dharma is Truth and revealed through the Shastras.
Supreme Court Justice S. Abdul Nazeer, observed, “There can be no doubt that this colonial legal system is not suitable for the Indian population. The need of the hour is the Indianisation of legal system. Great Lawyers and Judges are not born, but are made with proper education and great legal traditions, as were Manu, Kautilya, Katyana, Brihaspati, Narada, Yajnavalka and other legal giants of ancient India. Colonial legal system is detrimental to the goals of our Constitution and against our national interest.”
The Smriti Shastras were promulgated by the Dharma Shastra Promulgators (Smritikars) viz. Manu, Atri, Vishnu, Hareeta, Yajnavalkya, Ushana, Angira, Yama, Apastamba, Samvarta, Katyayana, Vrihaspati, Parashara, Vyasa, Shankha, Likhita, Daksha Gautam, Shatatapa and Vashistha.
Interestingly, the sloka in Sanskrit runs thus –
The Shastras are infallible and the spoken words of God. These must be adhered to.
– Muktikopanishad
All efforts are of two kinds–
those that are not regulated by the Shastras and those that are so regulated The unregulatedmake only for evil and the regulated
or make for good only.
Human activities are of two types i.e. As per the Shastras (Shastrita)that leads to Spiritual excellence, and that against Shastric view (uchhastra) leads to ruination.
Before I end up, shall narrate the experience of a renowned saint Swami SriKrishnananda who was then living in Varanasi. He was very close to Prabhupad Vijay Krishna Goswami and Swami Vivekananda.
There was a great problem of dog bite by rabid dogs in Kashi and the Municipality had issued orders that whoever would kill a stray dog and produce evidence by showing its severed tail would be paid eight annas (not a small amount in those days).
Swamiji was heading towards a bathing ghat in river Ganga at 4 am in the morning hours and found a dog struggling to tear off a cotton ribbon tied around its neck perhaps by a kind person to protect it from being killed. The dog was trying hard to get rid of the ribbon that was protecting it as the saviour of its life, and a cremators (Dom) was just behind it, with a stick hidden at its back to strike at the head of the dog, no sooner it tears off the ribbon and it may be classified as a stray dog and not a pet dog. Swamiji felt perturbed and gave a clap.
The desperate dog ran away to the dismay of the cremators.
The Shastric restrictions and inhibitions protect us always and man driven by desire always chooses the wrong side. The Tripadbibhuti Narayanopanisat says-
Whatever is evil, appears to a man to be good; while he rejects as evil whatever is good, because of the eternal twist of his mind by addiction to Sansar.
Due to repeated births and deaths, as stated by Adi Shankaracharyain Verse 22 of Bhaja Govindam–
Birth again, death again, again resting in the mother’s womb! It is indeed hard to cross this ocean of Samsara (cycle of repeated birth and death). O Murari! By Your causeless Mercy, please protect me (from this transmigratory process).
Caught up in desire, a person gets attracted to evil and enmeshed in Sansaar, only Sri Hari is the saviour. Association with saints can only save us from the fear of worldly attractions and attachments like the clap of the saint.
