We went to Sydney Murugan Temple on 3rd January 2025. Being a Friday evening, we saw a lot of devotees in the temple. It is a Sri Lankan Tamil temple, but I saw people from different communities including North Indians and Nepalis coming. A white coupe was doing special Puja in front of the main shrine with the help of a priest. There are three main shrines in the temple for Lord Murugan (Skandan, Kartikeyan, Shanmugam), Shiva in Linga form and Goddess Meenkashi.
The temple is constructed in the agamic way with the deities around the main shrines. Lord Ganesh and Lord Kartikeya/Muruga on either side with Dakshinamurthy, , Vishnu. Lakshmi, Durga , Chandikeswara etc. At the end Navagrahas also are installed.
The temple has a good and divine atmosphere. It won’t take much time to go around the temple. It has a spacious car park and a canteen behind.
I was surprised to see many devotees coming by public transport. It has a bus stop in front of the temple.
People wash their feet before entering the temple. The taps are just outside. In those days every temple has a tank where the devotees washed their hands and feet. It is still in all big temples in Tamil Nadu. Three or four priests were serving the devotees.
The temple has a website where the festival events and opening hours are given. It is better to check it before visiting the temple.
After having good Darshan we entered the temple canteen and ordered Masala dosa and Vadais. The quality was not good and the items were expensive as well. The dosa was not hot and made from sour dough. The temple authorities must improve it and reduce prices as well. When we went to Venkateswara temple, we had curd rice and lemon rice with other snacks. So, the temple may provide some rice items as well irrespective of the time of the day.
The temple surroundings have good flowering plants. The temple is maintained well.
From the temple website I came to know that they organise religious discourses and concerts on festival days. More details about the coming events are also available on the website.
There was a big board announcing the opening of a community centre very soon. It is a good move. Since Sydney has a sizeable population of Hindus it would serve the Hindu community.
When was the Sydney Murugan Temple built?
The foundation of this temple was laid way back in 1994. During 1985 a Hindu society, the Saiva Manram, was founded to construct a temple for Lord Murugan. Since its inception, Lord Murugan has been called ‘Sydney Murukan. ‘ The Saiva Manram has laboured hard for nearly ten years to build this temple for Lord Murugan.
Following is the address of the temple:
217 Great Western Hwy, Mays Hill NSW 2145
