I went to the Australian Museum in Sydney for the second time in ten years. There were hundreds of people on 16-1-2025, though we had very heavy rain in the morning and on the previous day.

When I visited it in 2015, I focussed only on aboriginal culture. Now they have added a big Mineral and Gem collection. Over 1800 minerals, gems, meteorites, fossils are included in the collection. You may collect at the entrance , a free map and booklet about the museum.

The admission is FREE. Photography is allowed. I am a Londoner. We have also the famous British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, Science Museum, Natural History Museum , art galleries  in London, where the admission is FREE. Each one is huge, and you need may hours to go around it.

Australian Museum in Sydney is not huge. You may finish it within three hours. But the mineral section makes a big difference. We can’t see so many verities of Gems and Minerals in any other museum. The reason being Australia is at the top of the list in Opal and Sapphire production. All kinds of precious and semi-precious stones are found in Australia.

What’s on display?

Minerals: The gallery features over 1,800 rare and spectacular minerals, including gemstones, rare earth minerals, and human-made minerals

Rocks: The gallery includes some of the oldest rocks on Earth

Meteorites: The gallery includes Australian meteorites and tektites

Ornamental minerals: The gallery includes minerals that can be carved, shaped, or polished into decorative objects.

They have several electronic board games in the museum to attract children. On the top floor they have the pictures of people who made Australia a great country. The Dinosaur section looks very interesting with the details of their discovery in Australia.

Another speciality is the display of Australian birds and animals. Like British Museum , this museum also organises special exhibitions for which one has to buy tickets. During this summer, Australian Museum has organised an exhibition titled Machu Picchu and the Golden Empire of Peru.

Students of Australia will greatly benefit by visiting the museum.   Researchers in Mineral Sciences and gemmolgy will also benefit .

The museum has easy access by bus and trains.
