My Ferry Trip in Parramatta River to Opera House
If you go to London, a ferry trip in Thames River to Greenwich is a must; if you go to Paris, a ferry ride along the River Seine is a must. If you go to New York, you must take a ferry to reach the iconic Statue of Liberty. In the same way a ferry trip along the Parramatta River to iconic Sydney Opera House is an enjoyable one in Australia.
Though you can reach the Opera House by train, a ferry trip has its own advantages. You get beautiful view of the city skyline, famous Sydney Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. You get fresh air and opportunity to take pictures and selfies.
All the ferries have lower and upper decks. On your way to the Circular Quay, where you get down to go to Opera house, harbour bridge, botanic gardens etc you may see hundreds of ferries, boats, and cruise ships.
Once you reach the final destination (Circular Quay) , you may walk to Opera House and all the places. Thousands of tourists, food stalls, Gift Shops will give you hours of enjoyment.
When I took the first ferry trip along the Parramatta River ten years ago, I did not get enough information. Now I have collected enough information to help the new visitors to Sydney.
The ferries cover many of the stations covered by trains. So, you may take a trip by ferry and return trip by train depending upon your agenda.

Where is Parramatta?
Just 24 kilometres outside of Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD) lies the oldest European settlement in Australia; Parramatta
Parramatta Station connects to locations all around metro Sydney. It’s a 30-minute ride from Sydney’s Town Hall to Parramatta.
Parramatta to Opera House
The river is also name Parramatta.
A ferry ride from Parramatta River to Sydney Harbour costs around $7–$10. The price and duration of the trip depends on the destination.
Duration: Around 1 hour and 14 minutes
We took a ferry trip to Circular Quay and spent an hour in the ferry. Each one of us bought a ticket costing ten dollars.
What is the cheapest day to go on a ferry?
It’s generally best to avoid peak times but the weekend isn’t automatically the most expensive time. Each port, route, and ferry company might have different most expensive days. Supposedly Tuesday & Wednesday are the cheapest days to sail, but always check for each journey.
River Parramatta
The Parramatta River is one of Sydney’s most iconic waterways. It extends from Blacktown Creek in the west to where it meets the Lane Cove River in the east and flows into Sydney Harbour.
The Parramatta River has many tributaries, including creeks, rivers, and canals.
Meaning of Parramatta
Initially called Rose Hill, it was renamed Parramatta, an Aboriginal word meaning “head of waters,”.
Right near Parramatta Wharf, fresh water, flowing downstream, meets salt water, creating a perfect place for eels to breed and thereby making them easy targets for hunters.
For Indigenous people the river was a shared food source, a highway and a territorial boundary.
