I went to the New South Wales Art Gallery in Sydney yesterday 22-2-2025. I spent two hours in both the wings of the art gallery. They are called NAALA BADU and NAALA NURA in aboriginal languages.
Naala Badu is an Aboriginal name that means “seeing waters” Naala Nura, which means “seeing Country”
There about 40,000 paintings and art objects. I have visited all the art galleries in London where I have been living from 1987. But the Sydney galleries are unique in showcasing aboriginal paintings and modern Australian paintings. The newly constructed buildings were opened a few year ago. The National Art Gallery in the capital city Canberra has original paintings of the aborigines. But Sydney gallery has commissioned works from living aborigines.
The attractions in Sydney include Asian paintings of Hindu Gods and Buddhist deities. The paintings on women’s struggle for freedom are also good.
Art gallery is accessible from stations like Martin Place and St James in Sydney..
From the Art Gallery, one can walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens and reach other places such as Sydney Opera House and the harbour.
I saw at least three Ganesh paintings and sculpture from Indonesia.
The building named Nala badu has Yiribana gallery with aboriginal paintings. The were not ancient, but commissioned and painted by aboriginal artists.
The building named Naala Nura has very old and modern paintings. Asian paintings are exhibited there.
I liked painting on Greek Philosopher Diogenes and paintings on aborigines by the English migrants.
It isa must for art lovers and students
As soon as one enters the building one can take a map and go through the exhibits. The website also shows digitised pictures of paintings.
The entry is free; but occasional special exhibitions are ticketed events.

Australian art (22,420)
The Australian collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales connects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art – from the oldest continuous cultures in the world – with stories told by a legion of Australian artists from the early 19th century to the present. These works of art come together to form an Australian collection that is among the finest and most representative in the country.
Works by Australian artists help reframe our history and its global connections, its deep past and its complex manifold futures. Highlights from the collection include 19th-century shields and ink drawings by Indigenous artists that reveal the impact of colonisation, as well as iconic visions of that same contested landscape that helped define a longstanding image of Australia. It also features 20th-century exemplars of the development of modernism in Australia and their echoes in contemporary art practices from around the country. In an art museum conceived for Australian artists, we recognise Australian art as having always been international, reflecting our more than 150-year history of being outward-looking and cosmopolitan.
International art (13,145)
From its home in Sydney, on Gadigal Country, the international collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales connects multiple global histories, art periods, styles, meanings and inspirations.
Founded on a significant collection of British Victorian art and an early gift of ceramics and bronzes from Japan, the international collection has since expanded to include fine examples from 15th-century European Renaissance art; ceramics from across the centuries; an outstanding photography collection; works by avant-garde modernists; exceptional works by late 20th-century American and European artists, and contemporary art from across the globe.
We are a leading centre for Asian art, with a collection that takes visitors on a journey through arts and cultures stretching from Indonesia to Mongolia, Japan to Iran. And we especially recognise our place within the Pacific region, through a rich and diverse collection of works by our neighbours across the Great Ocean.
As new channels of global communication increasingly transcend national boundaries, the international collection grows in response to an ever more fluid and interconnected world.
Gallery’s website has digitised pictures.
