Vidura Niti or Neeti  (Maxims of Vidura on Right Conduct) occurs in the Udyoga Parva of Mahabharata. It has got 8 chapters containing over 500 couplets in Sanskrit. In this, Vidura outlines things wise people and leaders should do, and things they should not.

Comparing our body as a chariot, one should calmly control the horses of senses, otherwise, uncontrolled senses would lead to destruction – like uncontrolled horses.

As dry wood would burn wet wood, an innocent man should stay away from sinners, otherwise, he will be punished in the same way as a sinner.

Whether one has or does not have wealth, he must be hospitable to his friends. One should never demand anything from their friends, trying to examine their worthiness

One who takes away others wealth by deceit, developed intimacy with women other than his own wife and abandons a kind and gentle friend is doomed

The joys of getting a boon, acquiring a state and birth of a son even if combined cannot match the joy of being released from the ruthless clutches of an enemy.

Goddess Laxmi showers blessings on such homes where senior most member of the family is protected, where a high caste man fallen in bad times, a money-less friend and a childless sister are given refuge and shelter.

An alert man should never visit such a man’s home during the evenings who is untrustworthy. He should not try to hide himself at the cross road, in the night as there is a chance of getting caught and he should not try to acquire that woman in which the king is interested as there is a certainty of persecution.

One who wants his own advancement must do service supreme, best quality man, If situation so arises, he can also do service to the medocre man, but he must never serve a mean person.

May 13 Tuesday

Sorrow destroys beauty ;Power  is destroyed by sorrow; Knowledge is destroyed by sorrow. Due to sorrow, man becomes diseased.

May 14 Wednesday

That man who knows the nature of all creatures (viz., that everything is subject to destruction), who is cognisant also of the connections of all acts, and who is proficient in the knowledge of the means that man may resort to (for attaining their objects), is reckoned as wise. (VN: 1.28).

May 15 Thursday

He who exults not at honours, and grieves not at slights, and remains cool and   unagitated    like a lake in the course of Ganga (Ganges), is reckoned as wise. (VN: 1.27)).

He, who commences his acts with due thought and consideration, who never  gives up things half way , who never wastes his time, and who has his senses under control, is regarded wise.

May 17 Saturday

He, who speaks eloquently, can converse on various subjects, knows the science of argumentation, possesses genius, and can interpret the hidden meaning of sacred books, is reckoned as wise.

May 18 Sunday

‘He alone is a wise man, who knows his capacity, who is never idle or lazy but exerts himself according to his might, who is not affected by pleasure or pain, profit or loss, honour or dishonour, who has a firm faith in Dharma and who is not tempted by sensual objects.

May 19 Monday

These six are instantly destroyed, if neglected, viz., kine (cow), services(the work which is under the supervision of servants), agriculture, a wife, learning, and the company of a base person. (VN: 1.85).

May 20 Tuesday

A king should renounce these seven faults which are productive of calamity, inasmuch as they are able to effect the ruin of even monarchs firmly established; these are women, dice, hunting, drinking, harshness of speech, severity of punishment, and misuse of wealth.(VN: 1.89-90).

After giving birth to a son, clearing all their debts, managing a means of earning a livelihood for them, then after arranging the marriages of his daughters, he should lead the life of a recluse in the forest.

May 22 Thursday

Resolution made to realize god, influence of an intelligent person, humility of a learned person and annihilation of the sinners give instant results.

May 23 Friday

Those having intelligence of a wise man, do not strive for objects that are unattainable, do not grieve for what is lost and gone, and never   lose   their heart (remain firm) in calamities.

May 24 Saturday

He ,who grasps the most difficult subject quickly, listens to the talks of others  patiently, pursues  the  objects of the  senses with judgment and not from desire and  does not give his opinion unasked , is said to possess the foremost mark of wisdom.

May 25 Sunday

He whose intended acts, and proposed counsels remain concealed from foes, and whose acts become known only after they have been done, is considered wise.

May 26 Monday

He whom neither anger nor joy, nor pride, nor false modesty, nor stupefaction, nor vanity, can draw away from the high ends of life, is considered as wise.

May 27 Tuesday

He, who wishes for those things that should not be desired, and forsakes those that may legitimately be desired, and who bears malice to those that are powerful, is regarded to be a foolish soul.

May 28 Wednesday

He, on the other hand, who is ignorant of scriptures yet proud, poor but builds castles in the air, and  wishes to obtain things or wealth without any exertion on his part, resorts to unfair means, for the acquisition of his objects, is a fool.

May 29 Thursday

One who takes his bath daily increases his BALA (power), ROOPA (beauty and splendour), gets sweet voice, becomes fairer, achieves KOMALTAA (tenderness), SUGANDHA (fragrance), PAVITRATAA (purity), SHOBHA (splendour) and SUKUMARATAA (delicacy).

May 30 Friday

(The following eight qualities increases the SHOBHA (splendour) of a man- BUDDHI (intelligence), KULINTAA (nobility), SHASTRAGYAAN-knowledge of scriptures, INDRIYANIGRAHA (control of the senses), PARAKRAMA (Bravery), Little talk, charity according to his ability and KRITAGYATAA (gratefulness).

May 31 Saturday

One must not take secret advice from an intelligent, a procrastinator, a man who is always in hurry and a false admirer. These four are worth abandoning for an emperor. A learned man must recognize these people.
