Akshaya Trtyai (Tritiya) has become synonymous with buying gold jewels. But the festival facts are different from it.

This year 2025 saw the gold sales jumping to Rs 12,000 crores. Hindus buy gold on that day because it will be everlasting wealth. Akshaya means that which is indestructible, never diminishing, ever growing.

It was the birthday of Lord Parasurama , one of ten incarnations of Vishnu.

Akshaya Tritiya is celebrated during Shukla Paksha Third day in the month of Vaisaka (In Tamil calendar it was the month of Chitra, because one tradition is the new month begins on Amavasyai/ new moon day; Tamils don’t follow it)

This year 2025 had added significance because of New Shankaracharya taking over as the 71st Peedaathipathi in the famous Kanchi Mutt in Tamil Nadu. New Shankaracharya was named as Satya Chandra Sekarendra Saraswathy.

In Varaha Lakshmi temple a Simhachalam in Andhra Pradesh the sandal paste is removed from the Lakhmi Narasimha Murti only on this day. On other days the idol is covered with sandal paste and it looks like Shiva Linga.

In Odisha the Rath Construction begins on this day. Every year the famous Jagannath Temple gets a new Chariot/Ratha.
It is the most famous Rath Yatra which is done by Hare Krishna Devotees around the world now. We got the English word Juggernaut from this deity.

Akshaya trtyai is very important for Saivites and Vaishnavites. Kedarnath temple, one of the 12 Jyotirlinga Shrines, and Badrinath temple, one of the 108 Holy Vishnu temples, open for six months on this day. Along with them Gangotri and Yamunotri shrines also open on this day.

Hindus believe Ganga River descended to earth on this day; also poorest of the poor Sudhama visited Lord Krishna on this day. Both these show that endless benefits will accrue if something is done on this day. Sudhama became rich the moment he gave handful of pounded rice to Lord Krishna.

Another interesting thing in Hindu botany is that Barley was discovered on this day. Also known as Yava in Vedic period, it is used in Yagas and Yajnas.
