I read a book about Kurukshetra which is full of interesting details. All of us know that the great Mahabharata war took place in Kurukshetra, a town in Haryana state.
Kurukshetra is in the North Eastern part of Haryana State. It is surrounded by four districts of Haryana (Ambala, Yamuna Nagar, Karnal & Kaithal) in the East, South, North and Patiala district of Punjab in the North West.
Bhagavad Gita begins with
धृतराष्ट्र उवाच |
धर्मक्षेत्रे कुरुक्षेत्रे समवेता युयुत्सवः |
मामकाः पाण्डवाश्चैव किमकुर्वत सञ्जय ||1||
(Dhritrashtr uvaach)
Dharmkshetre, Kurukshetre, samvetaH, yuyutsavH,
MamkaH, PandavaH, ch, ev, kim’, akurvat, Sanjay ||1||
Dhritarashtra said: O Sanjay, after gathering on the holy field of Kurukshetra, and desiring to fight, what did my sons and the sons of Pandu do? (BG 1-1)
Even now people are visiting this holy place.
Kurukshetra is the cradle of Indian civilization. Lying in the easterly region, called Brahma rishi desa in Vedic literature between the rivers Sarasvati and Drsadvati. The fate of India has been settled here from the days of Mahabharata to those of the battles of Panipat. All literature on Kurukshetra-give only fitful glimpses of its religious and cultural significance.
Muztar’s study is the first full length of the region from ancient times to the present. Kuru- Paanchaalas figure in Vedic literature as the best representative of Vedic culture. But the hostility as mentioned in the Mahabharata is not mentioned in the Vedic scriptures.
The vicissitudes through which the area passed under the Guptas Mughals and the British, including the successive revolts of the people of the region against the British rule have been traced; and for the first time all the 360 tirthas associated with the region have been identified.
PICTURES OF DHRUV NARAIN TEMPLE AND BRAHMASAROVAR
This is the sacred place where Krishna addressed Arjuna before the war began; and we got the Bhagavad Gita . there is a temple in Kurukshetra which contains over 300 commentaries on Gita of varying periods.
According to Puranas, Brahma created this place and Hindus have settled here at the dawn of civilization .
Among the hundreds of holy places, Brahma Sarovar, Sannehit Tank,Sarveshvara Mahadeva Temple, Chandra Kupa, Bhishma Kund (Ban Ganga), Dalyapur Ban Ganga, Kamal Nabh, Birla Temple and Apag Tirtha are the places most visited by the people.
Brahma Sarovar is among the chief attractions for pilgrims. It has a surface area of 3.5 Kilometre and about 15 lakh people can take a holy dip in the sarovar. There are 20,000 Ghats where about 20,000 women can bathe at a time.
The Sannehit tank is about 500 metres in length and about 100 metres in width. On one side of it there is a temple dedicated to Dhuv Narayan. There are idols of Lord Vishnu, Dhruva, Hanuman and goddess Durga.
Banyan Tree

A banyan tree said to be 5000 years old and from where Lord Krishna delivered the holy message of the Gita is still there.
Kurukshetra attracts huge crowd during solar eclipse. It is believed that anyone who bathes in the Brahma Sarovar during the solar eclipse gets the benefit of 1000 Asvamedha Yagnas. Lakhs of pilgrims come here during every eclipse. This is because Bhakaracharya believed that Kurukshetra was on the central meridian, it occupied a pivotal position for astronomical calculations. His book Siddhanta Sironmani talks of a straight line dividing the earth through Kurukshetra. On it were situated Rohtak, Ujjain and Mathura. It joined Lanka with Meru Parvat This view is corroborated by Albiruni. (Tamil saint Tirumular also sung about Maeru’s link with Lanka)
Al Biruni pointed out, “hallowed in history Kurukshetra is among the greatest pilgrim centres in the country. It was also the birthplace of the systematised agriculture through King Kuru’s ploughing.
We have more evidence from Balarama, Krishna’s brother. He carried a plough on his shoulder and spread agriculture throughout India. During the war he went on a pilgrimage to do this.
