Akananuru wonders continue…………………

We learnt that Mamular (maamoolar) was the oldest historian in Sangam Tamil literature because he mentioned the Nandas, Mauryas and their southward march with the help of Vadugas (non- Tamils). He praised Pulli, a chieftain of Venkatam Hills. The same Pulli is sung by another poet by name Kalladanar (kallaadanaar).
He got this name because he is from a town called Kalladam according to commentators. It is not new. In Ramayana and Mahabharata, we did not know the birth names of many people, particularly women. Pandu’s wife Madri is from Maadra Desa. Gaandhaari is from Gandhara desa / Afghanistan and so we called her Gaandhaari .; now her town is called Kandahar. Kunti, Yadava princess is called by that name because she was the daughter of Kuntibhoja, a Yadava king. In Tamil, also queens real names are not known. A Pandya queen was called Pandya Mahaa devi, a Choza queen was called Choza Mahaadevi. In fact, women were proud of their origin or their birth place. Maithili/Sita devi was called by that name because she was from the city of Mithila. Her other name Jaanaki shows that she was thee foster child of King Janaka. So Kalladanaar’s real name is not known. Manikkavasagar (maanikkavaasagar), great Saivite poet, also confirms there was a Siva shrine in the town of Kallaadam.

The same poet is attributed with another book called Kallaadam/ Kallāṭam (கல்லாடம்) noun < கல்லாடர். [kalladar.] Name of an amatory poem describing the erotic emotions in 100 akaval stanzas by Kallāṭar; [kalladaral agapporulin thuraiyamaiyanuru aga varpakkalar seyyappatta orunul.]
From these we come to know that he was a great Siva devotee. Let us look at his 7 verses in Akananuru (Akam) 9, 83, 113, 171, 199,209, 333. His poems are in other books Purananuru (Puram) and Kuruntokai (Kuru.)
Kalladar mentioned some important historic battles and a mysterious goddess called KOLLIP PAAVAI.

Battle of Talaiyaalangkaanam
Pandya Nedunchelian scored a big victory in a place called Talai Aaalan Kaanam Chera king, Choza king and five local heroes Titiyan, Ezini, Erumayooran, Ilankovenmaan, Porunan -all the SEVEN joined together and attacked Nedunchezian. The place is near Nannilam in Thanjavur area. One could imagine he came all the way from Madurai chasing the armies of seven other heroes. His victory over these people is praised by many other poets too. The word for war/battle in Tamil is SERU. So he has the epithet one who has won the battle of Talai aalankaanam.
Here is a verse in his praise: Akam 209.

There are two battles, and one mysterious goddess mentioned in this verse.
This verse is part of a book which deals with love, sex and family life what Tamils classified as Akam. So, all these come in a verse where a conversation is imagined between the lady of the house and her girl friend or female companion.
When she doubted the return of her lover, her friend says how can that man forget your beauty and so he would rush back to you.
In that context, she says,
Don’t worry about the loud gossip. I know the gossip is louder than the uproar when the mighty Pandya king defeated gang of seven at Talai Aalnkaanam .
I know your man has crossed the Venkatam hills under the chieftain Pulli .

You know the most beautiful goddess of Kolli hills known as KOLLI PAAVAI, a divinity made by the devas and praised by the world. Your beauty is equal to that goddess of Kolli hills which is famous because Kaari, chieftain and philanthropist of Mullur killed another philanthropist Ori and gave that hill full of jack fruit trees to the Chera king.
Kolli Pavai is a mysterious goddess because we don’t have any shrine for her now and we never hear about her in other Hindu scriptures. We hear about such Goddesses only in the north such as Vindhyavasini etc.
