Gaja Asura Samhara Murti கஜாசுர சம்ஹார மூர்த்தி
Images of Siva represented as the slayer of the elephant is common in south Indian temples. in this he receives the name Gajaha Murti or Gajasura Samhara Murti. The image has eight hands generally, but may occasionally have only four. The two upper most hands are stretched out and hold the hide of the elephant with its tail bent upwards in the form of an aureola, while on the sides of this aureola are seen the legs of the elephant hanging. In the three right hands are held the trident, the kettle drum or sword and the noose or the tusk of the elephant. Two of the three left hands hold the tusk or shield and the skull/Kapala, while the third exhibits the posture indicating astonishment/Vismaya or sometimes holds a bell.
The left leg is placed on the elephant head and the right is raised up so as to reach the left high. A good figure answering to this description comes from Perur near Coimbatore. The Valuvur image and the Tiruththurapoondi and the Dharasuram images show the contrary position of the legs.
The god has a terrible face with protruding teeth; and by his side seen standing the frightened goddess Uma with the young Skanda behind her. The Karanagama mentions the weapons tanka and deer and the pointing finger pose. This last posture of the hand is seen in the Tiruththurapoondi and the Dharasuram stone images. The former has perhaps five heads of which three alone are visible on the picture. It has ten hands and more attendant figures.
Story
A demonic tusker, Gaja Asura, attacked Siva’s devotees. Siva ripped the demon’s hide in one clean sweep from trunk to tail and flinging the Blood moist hide over his shoulders, danced in ecstasy.
In myth, Asuras or demons , represent brute power, energy running rampant, unguided and uncontrolled by any higher principle, which makes it evil and destructive.

கஜாசுர சம்ஹார மூர்த்தி
சிவா பெருமான் யானையின் உருவம் கொண்ட கஜ அசுரனை அழித்து அவன் தோலினை உரித்து ஆடையாகப் போர்த்திய வடிவம் கஜாசூரசம்ஹார மூர்த்தி வடிவமாகும். காசியில், யானை உருவம் கொண்ட கஜாசூரன், பிராமணர்களைத் துன்புறுத்தி வந்தான். இதனால் பிராமணர்கள் சிவனிடம் சென்று முறையிட்டனர். கஜாசூரனின் அழிவுச் செயல்களை செவியுற்ற சிவன், கஜாசூரனின் தலையின் மீது கால்களை மிதித்து அழித்து அதன் தோலினைப் போர்வையாகக் கைகளால் தூக்கி அணிந்து கொண்டார். இச் செய்தி சில புராணங்களில் உள்ளது
கஜாசூரசம்ஹார மூர்த்தி படிமம் சதுர்புஜம் (நான்கு கரங்கள்) அல்லது அஷ்ட புஜங்களில் (எட்டு கரங்கள்) அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். நான்கு கரங்கள் பெற்றிருந்தால் தந்தம் மற்றும் பாசமும் இரண்டு கரங்களிலும், பின் இரண்டு கரங்கள் யானைத் தோலினைத் தூக்கிப் பிடித்தவாறு அமையப் பெற்றிருக்கும். சிவனின் இடது கால் யானை தலையில் ஊன்றியவாறு அமைத்து, வலது காலை வளைத்து இடது காலின் தொடையினளவு உயரத்திற்கு உயர்த்தியவாறு அமைந்திருக்கும். யானையின் வால் சிவனுடைய தலையில் அணிந்துள்ள மகுடத்தின் மீது அமைக்கப்பட்டிருக்கும். சிவனின் அருகில் பார்வதி தேவி மற்றும் பாலகன் முருகன் ஆகியோர் ஈசனின் அரிய செயலினை அச்சத்துடன் நோக்குவது போல அமைந்திருக்கும். சிவனின் முன்புறம் சிவகணங்கள் நின்று கொண்டு முரசு மற்றும் இசைக் கருவிகள் இசைப்பார்கள் பேரூர், திருத்துறைப்பூண்டி, தாராசுரம், எலிபெண்டா குகை முதலிய பல இடங்களில் இந்த மூர்த்தியைக் காணலாம்
சோழர் காலத்தில் திருவாலீசுரவம், திருச்செங்காட்டங்குடி, தாராசுரம் கோயில்களில் விக்கிரகங்களாகவும் வார்க்கப்பட்டன. வழுவூரில் உள்ள செப்புப் படிமம் மிகவும் அழகாக இருக்கிறது .
படிமங்களின் கைகளில் உள்ள பொருள்கள் இடத்திற்கு இடம் சிறிது மாறுபடும். தேவாரப்பாடல்களில் சிவனின் இந்த வடிவத்தைக் குறிப்பிட்டுள்ளனர்
