Goonda” is a term used in the Indian subcontinent for hired criminals and gangsters. It is both a colloquial term and defined and used in laws, generally referred to as Goonda Acts.

Now and then newspapers publish the names of criminals arrested under Goonda act.

Alternate spelling is Gundar.

Tamil Saint Arunagirinathar who lived 500 years ago use the term Gundar for sinners. gundaR means plural of gunda.

He says that those sinners will fall into hell. He composed over 1300 beautiful poems in a particular genre and he is the only poet remembered for that particular style. Here is one of his Tamil poems with meaning in English:

thOzhamai koNdu chalamsey guNdargaL: Those despicable people who befriend first and stab in the back later;

Odhiya nandri maRandha guNdargaL: those base people who forget all the good deeds done to them;

sUzh viradhangaL kadindha guNdargaL: those ignoble people who forsake all the essential rites;

periyOraith dhUshaNa nindhai pagarndha guNdargaL: those worthless people who insult the elders and call them names;

eevadhu kaNdu thagaindha guNdargaL: those debased people who cannot stand the sight of anyone being given alms;

sULuRa venbadho zhindha guNdargaL: those lowly people who have given up speaking the truth;

tholaiyAmal vAzha ninaindhu varundhu guNdargaL: those selfish people who alone want to flourish and brood only about their survival;

needhi aRangaL sidhaindha guNdargaL: those immoral people who destroy all codes of justice and righteousness;

mAna agandhai migundha guNdargaL: those vile people who are full of blemishes and arrogance;

valaiyAlE mAyaiyil nindru varundhu guNdargaL: those mean people who fall victim to attachment and suffer in delusion;

dhEvargaL songaL kavarndha guNdargaL: and those depraved people who steal the property belonging to the place of worship;

vAdhai namandran varundhidung kuzhi vizhuvArE: will all fall into the miserable and torturous pit of hell, controlled by the God of Death.

ambaramum parambarai rAvaNanum: the ocean, King RAvaNA belonging to the dynasty of asuras,

chathuranga lankaiyum: his country LankA noted for its four divisions of armies (elephants, chariots, horses and soldiers) –

adaivEmun eedazhi yumpadi: were all rendered powerless and destroyed;

chandhranum siva sUriyanum surarum padham peRa: The Moon, the Sun, SivA, and all the celestials were all re-established in Heaven;

rAma saran thodu pungavan thiru marugOnE: when Rama sent out His arrow with His name branded on it. You are the beloved nephew of that great Rama!

kOzhi silamba nalam payindra kalApa natam seya: The rooster crows (from Your staff); the peacock dances gracefully;

manju thangiya gOpuram engum viLangu mangala vayalUrA: and the clouds settle on the tall towers of the temples in the sacred town VayalUr, Your favourite abode!

kOdai enum padhi vandha indhirar perumALE.: KOdainagar,* where You are seated with relish! You are worshipped by all IndrAs of the Celestial land, Oh Great One!

* KOdainagar is now known as VallakkOttai which is 6 miles south of SriperumputhUr near Chennai.

The poet is famous for his outburst against prostitutes. All his poems are condemning them because he himself was a victim  before he became a saint.

The saying that Every saint has a past and Every sinner has a future has come true I his life.
