Hindu’s Medical Science
Eight Birth Defects
Hindus classified disabled people into 8 categories. They are listed in Puram verse 28. The disabled are
the blind with no splendor, the shapeless mass of flesh,
the hunchback, the dwarf, the deaf, the dumb, one who
looks like an animal and an imbecile.
Tamil poetess Avvaiyar also said this
“ Rare is human birth, Vadivel (Skanda/Subramanya)! Rarer is birth as a male with perfect limbs , not being deaf, dumb, blind and eunuch and with full use of all the senses. Rarer still is attainment of knowledge and wisdom. Rarer than this is the tendency to give and serve; and rarest of all is a life dedicated to spiritual enlightenment, for when one reaches the end the heavens will open to welcome that person—the perfect of all human beings”.
அரியது கேட்கின் வரிவடி வேலோய்!
அரிதரிது மானிடர் ஆதல் அரிது
மானிடராயினும் கூன் குருடு செவிடு
பேடு நீக்கிப் பிறத்தல் அரிது

In Puram verse 28 we have Dharma Artha Kama in the same order as in Hindu Scriptures. Tirukkural and Tolkappiyam also repeat it in many places.
May your wealth nourish righteousness, prosperity and
pleasure!
Tolkappiam, though a grammar book says this in Sutras 92 and 418. This is a Hindu concept seen in epics and all Puranas.

Stage/ Play simile
Poet Muthukannan Sathanar (Puram Verses 28, 29)
said
the place looks
like the arena where dancers perform dances.
(In the olden days it was only Dance Drama unlike modern dramas where we see dialogues in prose and no songs at all.)
This simile is used by many Indian and Western poets.
World is a Drama Theatre
Another famous simile is comparing the world to a drama theatre and the people to actors who leave the stage when the drama is over.
“Great wealth is gradually accumulated like the audience tickling in to witness a show
But its disappearance will be instantaneous, also as it happens after a show”- -Kural 332
It is in Bhartruhari’s Neeti Satakam
Tamil anthology Purananuru 29 has also referred to the filling up and emptying of the show-arena to bring out the impermanence of the world.
Shakespeare in his Play As You Like it, says
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages. At first, the infant, mewling and puking in the nurse’s arms”.
We come across similar similes in Viveka chudamani 292 and Bhagavad Gita 18-61

Senior and Junior in Hinduism
The poet’s name is Muthu + Kannan, meaning Senior Kannan.
In the Western world we see George Bush Senior, George Bush Junior. In Sanskrit and Tamil this comes as a prefix.
Muthu Kannan= Senior Kannan
Ilam Kannan- Junior Kannan.
When Hindus print wedding invitations, they say Jyesta Putra/ Putri or Kanishta Putra/Putri Senior/ Junior Son/Daughter

May you be compassionate to those who live in houses with four
stilts, their roofs thatched with koovai leaves, who come to you
in need, like how you are compassionate to your enemies.
May your actions be of friendship and character!

In this world where everything appears and disappears like
actors who act various roles in festival, may you be happy with
your relatives! May the wealth that you protect bring you fame!

Item 373 Space – Solar System- Atmosphere
Hindus had advanced knowledge about the seven layers in the atmosphere and the space without air. It has been mentioned in more than one verse in Puram itself. Here poet Muthukannan says about the Solar System
The path of the red sun, its movement, the planets
around the movement, directions of changing winds,
and existing empty spaces without evidence – all
these are known to intelligent people who can
explain them.

cargo that untrained men unload on the wide paths.
From the days of Karikal Choza we have quite lot of references to Marin Trade. Before that we have Satavahana references and coins with ship emblem
