MEANING OF ARJUNA’S NAMES
Children in India are taught to recited Arjuna’s TEN NAMES when there are thunderstorms. Since God Indra was the deity of Thunder and lightning, and Arjuna was the son of Indra, people recite to get rid of the fear about thunder and lightning.
Buildings have lightning conductors to safeguard it from the thunder strikes. In the same way children have TEN NAMES of ARJUNA to protect them from the fear of Thunder. This boosts children’s confidence.
The names are called Arjuna Ten.
The Ten Names included in the ‘Arjuna Ten’ are
1.Arjuna =Pure , white
2.Bibhatsu- one who makes his enemies scared or hated
3.Dhananjaya = Winner of wealth; went upto Uttarakuru and brought home huge treasure
4.Flaguna- one who was born under the Panguni Uttara star
5.Gudakesa = who has conquered sleep
6.Krishna- one who gets rid of nescience, ignorance
7.Kritee = crowned by Indra
8.Savyachacin = He can use even his Left hand to fire arrows
9.Svetavahana – one who has a chariot with white horses
10.Vijayan- ever victorious (ALSO JISHNU)
In Bhagavad Gita and other scriptures the following names are used. In the Gita 13 different names are used for Arjuna.
Arjuna =Pure , white
Bharata = Descendent of Bharata
Dhanamjaya = Winner of wealth;went upto Uttarakuru and brought home huge treasure
Gudakesa = who has conquered sleep
Kapi dwaja = Having Flag of Monkey ; Hanuman is in the flag of Arjun
Partha = Son of Prtha; (Prtha is another name of Kunti)
Paramtapa = Oppressor of the enemies
Pandava = Pandu’s son
Savyachacin = He can use even his Left hand to fire arrows
Anakan =sinless
Kauntheyan = Son of Kunti
Kritee = crowned by Indra
Kurunandana = Born in Kuru clan
