/ May 20, 2019in the early forties, there was a Tamil film for which the then famous lyricist Papanasam Sivan wrote a beautiful song, carrying this thought:
The Lord feeds the toad within the rock, and the fetus in the womb. Will he not take care of us, even if we lose our sight-
கல்லினுள் தேரைக்கும் கருப்பை உயிர்க்கும்
புல்லுணவே தந்து போற்றும் நம் நாதன்
சித்தமும் வீணே கலங்குவ தேனோ?
சத்வ குண போதன்
Rajinder Krishan, the Hindi poet expressed the idea that we are all fed by one God:
[ Movie Baarish, 1957]
Dane dane pe likha hai khanewale kaa nam
Lenewale karod denewala ek ram
Koyi kitna amir ho ya kitna garib
Paye utana hi jitna hai usaka nasib
Aage malik ke chalata nahi koyi dam
Lenewale karod denewala ek ram
On every grain is written the eater’s name.
The eaters are millions, the provider is One God.
Rich or poor, one eats only so much as is provided for him ( as his destiny).
God cannot be bribed by any price!
Crores of people eat, the One God provides!
In the Bhagavatam, the example given is that of the python. While the dog or other animals go out in search of food, the python stays where it lives and it too gets its food!
The rat the ant accumulates food for the winter or rainy season, but they get destroyed by excess rain. The bee saves honey, but is taken and enjoyed by others, often by killing the bees. The monkey or the birds do not save anything for the morrow, but they also live- God provides for them too. Sri Ramana Maharshi used to give the monkey as the perfect example of a true sanyasi- it has no home, eats what is available, does not save for the next day!
Shakespeare had this idea:
Who doth ambition shun
And loves to live in the sun
Seeking the food he eats
And pleased with what he gets-
Come hither, come hither, come hither-
Here shall he see no enemy but winter and rough weather.
There is no insurance against hunger, except divine providence!
