சம்ஸ்கிருத சுபாஷிதங்கள் தொடர்ச்சியாக இன்னும் சிலவற்றை இங்கு காணலாம்:
குலானி சமுபேதானி கோபி: புருஷதோஷ்வத: |
குலசங்க்யாம் ந கச்சந்தி யானி ஹீனானி வ்ருத்தத: ||
எத்தனை ஆண் மக்கள் இருந்தாலும் சரி, எவ்வளவு குதிரைகளும் பசுக்களும் இருந்தாலும் சரி, குடும்பத்தில் நல்லொழுக்கம் இல்லையேல் அப்படிப்பட்ட குடும்பங்கள் குடும்பங்களாகக் கருதப்பட மாட்டாது.
Such families, though thery are in possession of (any number of ) male members, horses and kine, if found in lacking in good conduct, can not be counted among families.

1 -8-16 3025 கீதையின் மஹிமை : சிருங்கேரி ஆசார்யர்!(ஞான ஆலயம்
“PANINI speaks more than once of affixes which are ‘seen’ or of a vowel which is ‘seen’ in words. Panini –3-2-178, 3-3-130, 3-2-75, 6-3-137, 3-2-101, 5-3-14
Kaiyata amongst others , refers to a written text of this grammar, even when there is no necessity whatever of making allusion to such a circumstance.
And when Prof Mmuller , as we shall presently see, avails himself of so late an authority as the Mimansa Varttikas of Kumarila to prove or to make plausible facts concerning the highest antiquity , I will quote , as a counterpart, another late work which introduces to us the god Siva himself as recommending the writing and wearing of grammatical texts as a means for the attainment of boons and the prevention of evils. The passage alluded to occurs in the chapter of a mystical dialogue between Siva and his wife, called JNAANA KAANDASESHA- RAHASYA, where Siva after having explained to Parvati the letters of the alphabet, concludes his instruction with the following words:-
If a man writes this grammatical explanation on a birch leaf, with a mixture of yellow pigment gorochana and saffron , or if he has it written by a scribe with the quill of a porcupine on his neck or his arm or head, he becomes, after three days, free from all disease; and if a wiseman, wishing progeny, reads and retains it attentively, he is sure to obtain a son , who will be like me, from his (previously) barren wife. If a battle rages or royal family spreads terror, or a tiger causes alarm or on similar occasions, all danger vanishes in merely remembering – this grammatical explanation – what further shall I tell you etc.

Max muller quotes, it is true, a passage from the Mahabharata , and one from Kumarila’s Varttikas, which condemn , the one who writing of the Veda, and the other learning it from a text/book; but I hold that neither quotation proves anything against the practice of writing the Veda at or before Panini’s time.
In Mahabharata , we read ,
Those who sell the Vedas and those who write them , those who defile/corrupt them , they shall go to hell – Anusasana Parva 1645
Kumarila says,
That knowledge of truth is worthless which is acquired from the Veda , if the Veda has not been rightly comprehended, if it has been learnt from writing, or been received from a Sudra.”

“Max Muller himself says in his book,
The ancient literature of India was continually learnt by heart; and even at the present day when MSS have become so common, some of its more sacred portions must still be acquired by the pupil from the mouth of a teacher, and not from MSS”.
–This is the reply given to Max Muller by Theodor Goldstucker in his book ‘Panini – His Place in Sanskrit Literature’.
My comments
Even today Veda Patasalas (Vedic Schools) in Tamil Nadu teaches it only by mouth.
2000 year old Tamil Sangam literature also called the Vedas ‘Ezuthaa Karpu’ in Kuruntokai, which means Vedas are learnt without (from) writing. Periya Puranam, which is nearly 1000 years old, says ‘Unwritten Veda was given by Lord Siva who knows writing’ .
Tamils are very clear about it even 2000 years ago. Max Muller’s argument that Hindus did not know writing or a book became absurd after the discovery of Asokan Inscriptions throughout India and Indus-Sarasvati seals. Max Muller died in 1900, before all these discoveries. Goldstucker who died even before Max Muller, had a very clear and perspective outlook about writing in India.
Goldstucker is proved 100 percent correct!
My second comment is about the use of Porcupine quill. Even today Brahmins in Tamil Nadu use it to get a male child. On the day of Seemantham of a pregnant woman (done in 3rd or 6th month of pregnancy), the husband has to part her hair on the head with the quill of a porcupine. It is a sort of acupuncture or acupressure treatment. So this has been practised for long throughout India, if we go by the sloka in the above book.

In this connection, Kate Raworth mentions a conversation with an Indian engineer she had met in Germany. It is worth reproducing:
“When I asked whether he had opted to learn about ecologically smart technologies, he just shook his head and replied, ‘No. India has other priorities- we are not rich enough to worry about that yet.’ Surprised, I pointed out that almost half of India’s land is degraded, the nation’s groundwater levels are falling fast, and air pollution is the worst in the world. A flicker of recognition crossed his face, but he just smiled and repeated his words, ‘We still have other priorities.’ ”
I bet our politicians would be no better. They have all become slaves to defunct economists, as Lord Keynes said. I would say they are slaves to deranged economists.
Simon Kuznets the originator of the concept of GNP warned us:
” Distinctions must be kept in mind between quantity and quality of growth, between its costs and return, and between the short and the long term. Objectives should be explicit: goals for “more” growth should specify more growth of what and for what.”
End of growth?

Physicist Robert Ayers and ecological economist Benjamin Warr developed a model of growth including energy as an input, in addition to the two factors labour and capital, economists usually take. They found that the last two centuries of extraordinary economic growth are due to cheap fossil fuels. This trend is not likely to continue. “future GDP growth is not only not guaranteed, it is more than likely to end within a few decades.”
What does economics ultimately teach? Precisely nothing! We cannot set right the economy or the world with all the economics studied in the universities. For they teach mere theories which are not applicable to life. It takes a great economist to realise this. Once again we turn to Lord Keynes who said in 1922:
“The theory of economics does not furnish a body of settled conclusions immediately applicable to policy. It is a method rather than a doctrine, an apparatus of the mind, a technique of thinking, which helps its possessor to draw correct conclusions”
Life beyond growth
Economics by itself is a dubious discipline. It has to be understood in the light of a large number of other disciplines. It is said that war is too important a matter to be left to generals. We may say, economics is too dangerous to be left to economists or politicians. The public has to sharpen its common sense to question what goes on in the name of economics, develop enough economic wisdom to be able to judge matters and question economists and politicians. Kate Raworth ‘s book is a tremendous step in the direction of making us economically knowledgeable. It is sure to disturb a diligent reader, the wealth of material can be overwhelming but things are really so difficult. Let us not allow mainstream economists to fool us any longer. This book is like an encyclopedia, tremendously important.

2. Mahatma Gandhi was a deep thinker on economic matters. All his public life, he strove to make man economically independent and self-sufficient, and self-reliant. But Nehru completely buried Gandhiji’s ideas and adopted the Soviet ideology and system of planning. He made planning synonymous with growth and development. Most Indians are still under the spell of this notion. PM Modi abolished the Planning Commission, but has instituted another arrangement in its place! This shows we are all still slaves to defunct politicians!
3. We should realise that the so called antagonism between free and socialist economies is not so real in practice. There is really no “free” economy in the world- all economies are controlled by the government directly or indirectly to varying degrees. The real issue is whether the economy damages the environment or not. Here, both communist or socialist and so called free economies are equally damaging. They both adopt the same technologies with the same disastrous consequences.

கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர் சொல்லும் அதிசய விஷயங்கள் – அ அ அ அ அ!!!!!!!! (Post No.8456)
கோல்டுஸ்டக்கர் யார் ?
இவர் (Theodor Goldstucker) மிகப்பெரிய சம்ஸ்க்ருத அறிஞர்.ஒரு ஜெர்மானிய (Jew) யூதர். அதே ஜெர்மனியில் பிறந்த மற்றோரு சம்ஸ்கிருத அறிஞரான மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் (Max Muller) செய்த தவறுகளை எல்லாம் அம்பலத்தில் கொண்டுவந்தவர். இருவரும் சம காலத்தவர். இருவரும் லண்டனில் வசித்தவர்கள் இன்னும் பல அற்புதங்களைச் சாதித்திருப்பார் கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர். ஆயினும் மாக்ஸ்முல்லருக்கு முன்னமே இறந்து விட்டார்.
மாக்ஸ்முல்லர் -1823 – 1900
கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர் – 1821- 1872
கோல்ட்ஸ்டக்கர் ஸமஸ்க்ருத மொழியில் டாக்டர் (Ph.D.) பட்டம் வாங்கியவர்.1850ம் ஆண்டு லண்டனுக்கு வந்தார். இருபது ஆண்டுக்கும் மேலாக லண்டன் யூனிவர்சிட்டி காலேஜில் (UCL, LONDON) வேலை பார்த்தார். பேராசிரியர் வில்சன் (Prof.Wilson) என்பவருக்கு சம்ஸ்கிருத அகராதி தயாரிப்பதில் உதவியாக நின்றார் . இருவரும் சேர்ந்து சம்ஸ்கிருத மொழியில் ‘அ ‘ என்னும் எழுத்து வரும் இடம் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் பொருள் எழுதத் துவங்கினர் 480 பக்கங்கள் எழுதியும் “அ” முடியவில்லை. உப்பு பொம்மை கடல் ஆழத்தை அளக்க முடியுமா ? கடலில் சில அடி செல்வதற்குள் அது கரைந்தல்லவா போகும். எழுத்துக்களில் நான் “அ” என்று பகவத் கீதையில் கண்ணனும் எழுத்துக்களில் முதன்மை பெறுவது“அ” என்று திருவள்ளுவரும் சும்மாவா சொன்னார்கள். “அ” என்னும் எழுத்தே 480 பக்கம் எழுதியும் முடியவில்லையே என்று கருதி அகராதி முயற்சியைக் கைவிட்டனர். சம்ஸ்க்ருதம் அவ்வளவு வளமான மொழி!
உலகம் புகழும் பாணினி விட்ட 10,000 பிழைகள்!
எவரும் பார்க்காத நுணுக்கமான விஷயங்களைப் பார்ப்பவர் கோல்ட் . பாணினியின் காலத்தை கி.மு நாலாம் நூற்றாண்டு என்று சொன்ன அதே மூச்சில் பாணினி எழுதிய அஷ்டாத்யாயி (எட்டு அத்தியாயம்) புஸ்தகத்தின் மீது நோட்ஸ் — வார்த்திகா என்னும் குறிப்பு — எழுதிய காத்யாயன வரருசியும் அதேகாலம் என்று சொன்ன மாக்ஸ்முல்லரை இவர் கிழி , கிழி என்று கிழித்துவிட்டார் .
கோல்ட் சொன்னார் :
“பாணினியின் 3993 சூத்திரங்களில் 1500-க்கும் மேலான சூத்திரங்களில் காத்யாயனர் குறிப்புகள்/வார்த்திகம் எழுதியுள்ளார். அவர் குறிப்பிடும் வேறுபாடுகள் 10,000-க்கும் மேல் இருக்கின்றன
இப்போது நமக்கு நாமே ஒரு கேள்வி கேட்போம். பாணினி போன்ற ஒருவர் 10,000 குறைகள், பிழைகள், புரியாத விஷயங்களுடன் ஒரு புஸ்தகம் எழுதியிருப்பாரானால் உலகம் ஏன் பாணினியைப் புகழ்கிறது ? இப்போது நாம் ஒரு புஸ்தகம் 4000 பக்கங்களுக்கு எழுதி அதில் 10,000 தவறுகள் இருந்தால் உலகம் நம்மை ஏசுமா , பேசுமா?
உண்மை என்னவென்றால் காத்யாயனர் மிகவும் பிற்பட்ட காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்ததால் இந்த வேறுபாடுகள் தோன்றின
பாணினிக்கு முன்னர் பல இலக்கண வித்தகர்கள் இருந்தனர். இலக்கணம் என்பதை ஒரு சில அறிஞர்கள் மட்டும் படிக்கவில்லை. எல்லோரும் குருகுலத்தில் படித்தனர்.
இதற்கு நான் 4 காரணங்களைச் சொல்லுவேன் :-
1.பாணினி காலத்தில் வழக்கில் இருந்த விதிகள் காத்யாயனர் காலத்தில் இல்லை. அந்த விதி தவறு என்று நினைக்கும் அளவுக்கு கால வேறுபாடு.
2. பாணியின் காலத்தில் இருந்த சொற்களுக்கு புதிய அர்த்தங்கள் தோன்றி விட்டன.
3. பாணியின் பல சொற்கள் வழக்கொழிந்து போய் ‘பத்தாம் பசலி’ சொற்கள் ஆயின .
4.பாணினி காலத்தில் இல்லாத புதிய இலக்கியங்கள் எழுந்தன.
இதே போல காத்யாயனர் காலத்துக்கும் பாணினி காலத்துக்கும் இடையே பல 100 ஆண்டுகள் உருண்டோடிவிட்டன ; ஆகையால் மாக்ஸ் முல்லர் சொல்லுவது போல பாணினியும், காத்யாயனரும் ஒரே காலத்தில் வாழவில்லை. மாக்ஸ்முல்லர் வாதத்தில் பசை இல்லை என்பதுமட்டுமல்ல. அவரே தான் இருவரும் ஒரே காலம் என்று சொன்னதை மறந்து, முன்னுக்குப் பின் முரணாகவும் எழுதி இருக்கிறார்.”
இவ்வாறு கோல்ட் எழுதி இருக்கிறார். முல்லருக்கு முன்னர் கோல்ட் இறந்தது நம் துரதிருஷ்டமே .
என் கருத்து :–
இதற்கு தமிழிலும் நிறைய உதாரணங்கள் உள . தொல்காப்பியருக்குப் பல நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்குப் பின்னர் வந்த பவணந்தி முனிவர் புதிய விதிகளை இயற்றினார்.
நான் இப்போது ஒரு கடைக்குப் போய் “யாம் செப்புவது என்னவெனில் ……..” என்று பேசத் துவங்கினால் ஒரு மாதிரி எண்னைப் பார்ப்பார்கள். சங்க காலத்தில் “நான், நாங்கள்” (We) கிடையாது.
கழகம் என்றால் சங்க காலத்தில், திருவள்ளுவர் காலத்தில், (Casino)‘சூதாடும் இடம்’. இப்போது அதை சங்கம், கட்சி என்னும் பொருளில் நாம் பயன்படுத்துகிறோம்.
தொல்காப்பியர் தரும் நீண்ட உவம உருபுப் பட்டிலில் காணப்படும் உருபுகள் சங்க இலக்கியத்தின் 30,000 வரிகளில் கூட இல்லை. தொல்காப்பியர் , அவருக்கும் முந்தைய ஆசிரியர்கள் சொன்னதை — அகஸ்தியர் சொன்னதை — அப்படியே கிளிப்பிள்ளை மாதிரி திரும்பிச் சொன்னார் அவ்வளவுதான்.
பாணினிக்கு எழுத்தே தெரியாது என்று மாக்ஸ்முல்லர் எழுதியதை கோட்ஸ்டக்கர் எப்படி தகர்த்து எறிந்தார் என்று முந்தைய கட்டுரையில் எழுதிவிட்டேன். அசோகரின் பிராமி எழுத்து ஆப்கானித்தான் முதல் இலங்கையின் தென் கோடி கண்டி வரை இருப்பதிலிருந்து, பல்லாயிரம் சதுர மைல்களுக்கு எழுத்தறிவு இருந்ததை நாமே இன்று அறிய முடிகிறது.

Economic system has to be redesigned to ensure more even flow of income and wealth. Growth does not automatically lead to prosperity for all. This flood does not raise all boats equally! [Often, it even ceases to be flood.]
-Growth does not automatically lead to environmental health. Greenhouse gas emissions, groundwater depletion and contamination, deforestation, soil degradation, agrochemical use (which is invariably abuse of the environment), biodiversity loss- these are not going to slow down or get reversed by pursuing more growth on current lines. Today the economy takes matter from the environment, and throws away the waste as if it were a sink! Even big corporates like Volkswagen have been found cheating! Industrial activity has broken down natural systems of recycling, and its own products and byproducts defy any system of recycling as these materials cannot be absorbed by nature! If every country in the world tried to emulate the living style and consumption pattern of the US or UK, we would need 3 or 5 planets earth to supply us the material resources, but generated waste is again a different matter!
-We have to question the very concept of growth, and at least be agnostic about its benefits. Economic growth is the only universal religion today! In the 1960s W.W.Rostow propounded his theory of the stages and process of ‘Growth’ and envisaged the state of ‘high mass consumption’ as the fifth and final stage of the growth phenomenon. Now, precisely high mass consumption has been shown to be an impossibility on a global scale. And it is a disaster even within individual countries when followed to the extreme.
Though economists speak of growth, no one has dared to publish a graph of growth! There are hundreds of diagrams and graphs, charts and tables but none absolutely on growth! The reason? The very attempt to draw such a graph will show its utter idiocy! It is impossible to draw such a figure! Rostow talked of take off, but what takes off has to land too! It is the responsibility of this generation to ensure that the mechanism we have devised does not crash land!
Questioning growth
Many great economists have questioned the idea of endless growth in a finite environment: E.J.Mishan, E.F.Schumacher, Donella Meadows, Hazel Henderson, Herman Daly, etc. But the mainstream of economic orthodoxy as represented by the leading universities in the West such as Harvard and Chicago are like buffalos in the rain- as we say in India: absolutely insensible and insensitive! They carry on as if nothing has happened! And they silence the ideas which are critical to their petty theories. The so called developing countries also emulate them blindly. We do not have any genuine original thinkers among economists or politicians in India. We only have imitators.
Most of our so called bright youngsters take up technical studies and are hardly aware of the full ramifications of the economic system and its consequences for society.
Tamil and Vedas
