Part 4

Here are more scientific facts from Vishnu Sahasranama (VS):

From Adi Shankara’s commentary:

Hiranyagrabhah- 411th name

He who was the cause of golden coloured egg out of which Brahma was born .

Agrajah –891st word

One who was born before everything else, that is HIRANYAGARBAH.

Rig Veda 10-121-1 says, Hiranyagrabhah samavartataagre- Hiranyagrabhah came into being first. This is the stage before Big Bang.

The universe, the earth, the planets are round or oval in shape. All Sanskrit words such as Andam, Mandalam, Golam show only round shape. Without Hubble telescope or Galileo’s Telescope Rig Veda described Universe, Galaxies, Plants as round/oval shaped.

Svadhrtah- 843rd word

The very word  Graha -used for planets or any heavenly object means attraction, grip, gravity, grab.

All English words such as grip, grab, gravity are derived from Sanskrit word ‘graha’.

Hindus knew the heavenly objects have gravity which maintains order in the space. So, gravity was not discovered by Tom Dick and Harry.

Svadhrtah means one supported by oneself.

If He is not supported by any, how does He stand? By way of answer it is said: Supported by oneself.

Chandogya Upanishad says,

Sa bhagavah kasmin pratishthita iti? Sve Mahimni—O Master! Where can it be established? In its greatness alone.

So, all the universal forces are known to Hindus and they named God for all such forces.

Nakshatra-nemih- 440th word (Star)

There is the following verse

Nakshatra – taakaih saardham Sandra suuryaadhayo grahaah

Vaayupaasa- mayair bandhair nibaddhaa  Dhruva-samjnite.

Heavenly bodies like moon and sun along with all Nakshatras and Taarakas (STARS) are tied to Dhruva with bonds constituted by of air.

According to this statement all these heavenly bodies are included in the tail of Dhruva or  Sisumaara Cakra. In the heart of the Sisumaara Cakra, the lord dwells as its operator. The Veda says describing Sisumaara

Vishnur hrdayam – Vishnu is its heart.

My comments

Here Dhruva is not just Pole star. It means centre of attraction. Like our Milky Way there are billions of galaxies .

It wasn’t until the 1920s when it was confirmed that many of these nebulous stars were in fact completely different galaxies, whole other sets of billions of stars like the Milky Way, far beyond our own. We now know the Milky Way is but one of the billions of galaxies in the universe.

Note the word Cakra/ wheel/ circle. Hindus knew that these heavenly galaxies are round or oval.

Sisumaara Cakra may be galaxies or Milky Way  galaxy.

Vaikunthah – 405th name/word

The bringing together of the diversified categories is Vikuntha.  He who is the agent of it is Vaikunthah.

There is the following verse,

Mayaa samslesitaa bhuumir adhbir vyoma ca vaayunaa

Vaayus ca tejasa saardham vaikunthatvam tato mama

I united earth with water, the sky with air and the air with fire. So I have got the status of Vaikuntha.

The word can also mean one who is without any limitation or opposing factor.

My comments

We, laymen, are taught Vaikuntha is the heavenly realm of Lord Vishnu. But Shankara’s above commentary shows the development of earth from its rocky origin:
Earth/rock—water—oxygen- atmosphere – fire for Yaga, Cooking, Heating, Energy production etc.

This sequence is repeated in many poems in Sanskrit and Sangam Tamil literature.

Dasaavataar also explains the development-

Earth taken from water by Varaha- Fish Avatar- Amphibian/Tortoise Avatar- Half animal Half man/ Narasimha avatar- Rama, Krishna (Full Man), Kalki (Super man with laser and nuclear bombs)etc.

We must learn to read between the lines.

Sahasraamsuh – 483rd nama /word

Sahasra literally means 1000. But it stands for huge or big number in Sanskrit scriptures.

Sahasraamsuh- one with numerous rays, that is the sun. but as these rays of light really belongs to the Lord, this epithet indicates Him.

Taittitiri Brahmana 3-12-79-7 says,

Yena suuryas tapati tejaseddhah – lighted by whose brilliance, sun shines.

The Gitaa says

Yad aaditya gatam tejah- whatever brilliance there is in the sun that belongs to the Paamaatman

My comments

According to modern science Sun is a moderate yellow star. There are huge stars which may be equal to 1000 or 10000 suns. But as far as earth is concerned, sun is the biggest source of energy. If it goes out, earth will die within a few days. So Hindus showed Sun and Moon as gods. If I want to explain how big is a sea to a child who has never seen it, I can only show the child a lake in my town and say sea is 1000 or 10000 times bigger than it. Yet the child could not get a real picture of ocean. We are like children; so saints show us sun and moon as god  and tell us God is as powerful as these heavenly objects.

Aadidevah – 490th word/ naama

He who is the first of all beings. Or He who draws all beings to Himself.

My comments

This is what astronomers call Big Crunch. In science it is only hypothesis. But Hindus repeated it 1000 times and said it will start again with Big Bang- it is cyclical.

The Big Crunch is a hypothetical scenario for the ultimate fate of the universe, in which the expansion of the universe eventually reverses and the universe recollapses, ultimately causing the cosmic scale factor to reach zero, an event potentially followed by a reformation of the universe starting with another Big Bang.

What is a hypothesis for astronomers is a certainty for Hindus and the amazing thing is they said it thousands of years before our modern astronomers.

The Upanishads compared it with spider which draws its own spin inside.
