Rudra – – Word No 114 in VS

For history part, I take two names Siva and Rudra

In the last article, I gave details about Rudra Daman who gave us the first Sanskrit language inscription dated 150 CE. That is Gujarat.

Sivah – Word No.600 in VS

Lord Siva’s different names appear in VS. but Siva is important in history because many kings like Siva Skanda Varman (Pallava), Sivasvati Satavahana, and early kings of Sri Lanka (BCE period) had Siva in their names.

Srir Vijaya

V S palasruti/benevolent couplets has an important statement from Sanjaya. He says,

Where Krishna is, Where Arjuna holding bow is, there will be Victory, Glory, Justice , prosperity and Auspiciousness. He used the word Sri Vijaya. The mighty Indonesian empire took that name.

Srivijaya was a mighty  empire based on the island of Sumatra (in modern-day Indonesia) that influenced much of Southeast Asia. Srivijaya was an important centre for the expansion of Buddhism from the 7th to 11th century AD. Srivijaya was the first polity to dominate much of western Maritime Southeast Asia. They ruled for over 400 years.

Sisirah – 913

one who is the shelter to those who are burning in the three types of worldly fires—sufferings arising from material causes, psychological causes and spiritual causes.

My comments

It looks like Roman philosopher Cicero ‘s name is linked to this word.

Marcus Tullius Cicero (106–43 BCE) is best known to posterity as a prominent statesman and orator in the tumultuous period of the late Roman republic. As well as being a leading political actor of his time, he also wrote voluminously. Among his writings, around a dozen philosophical works have come down to us.

Suurasenah – 704

one having an army of heroic people like hanuman

My comments

Sura sena dynasty is one of the oldest dynasties in India.

Wisdom library website says,

Sūrasena (सूरसेन) refers to one of the sixteen Mahājanapadas of the Majjhimadesa (Middle Country) of ancient India, as recorded in the Pāli Buddhist texts (detailing the geography of ancient India as it was known in to Early Buddhism).—In the Aṅguttara Nikāya, the Sūrasena country is mentioned as one of the sixteen Mahājanapadas. The country had its capital at Madhurā or Mathurā, which like Kausāmbī stood on the river Yamunā. The ancient Greek writers refer to the Sūrasena country as Sourasenoi and its capital as Methora.

Abhu- 437

One without birth.

My comments

Mount Adbhuta got corrupted and got the name Mount Abu . It is a hill resort in Rajasthan. There are famous Jain temples with lot of beautiful architecture and Devi temple. From Puranic days the place is referred to.

Maanadah – 748

One who has regard and beneficence towards devotees.

My comments

Manetho was an Egyptian priest, and he wrote the history of Greece in Greek language. Through him we know Egyptian and contemporary Sumerian kings.

xxxx

Samitnjayah- 362- one who is victorious in Samithi.

My comments

Samithi gave birth to the word Committee in English. C should be pronounced as S. This is Rig Vedic word where it meant Assembly. So the Mother of Parliament is in the Rig Veda. Another word for the same is Sabhaa. This Rig Vedic word gave birth to Tamil word Avai, now used for  State Assembly. It shows Rig Vedic people set up the two houses of Parliament.

xxxx

Purandarah – 335

One who destroys the cities of the enemies of Devas.

My comments

This epithet is used for both Siva and Vishnu. In the Vedas destroying forts is attributed to Indra. Lot of people misused the word to accuse Indra as the destroyer of Indus Valley cities. Nowadays that controversy is settled, because we knew the civilisation disappeared due to climatic changes.

xxxx

Manu -51; Swayyambhuuh –37

Both referred to Manu who appears in Rig Veda many times.

But according to Shankara the meaning is,

He who thinks; or He is called Manu because he manifests in the form of mantra and of Manu (Patriarch)

The story of Manu and Great Floods is in all religions. He was the one saved all creatures. The author of Manu Smrti is also considered a historical figure.
