அருணகிரிநாதருக்கு என்ன ‘வேணும்’? – 1 

ச. நாகராஜன்

 அடியார்களுக்கு என்ன வேண்டும் என்பதைக் கேட்பதில் அருணகிரிநாதருக்கு ஈடு இணை இல்லை.

அவர்களுக்கு வேண்டுவதைத் தனக்கு வேண்டும் என்று தன்னை முன்னிலைப் படுத்திக் கேட்கிறார்.

தனக்கு என்னென்ன வேண்டும் என்று ஒரு பெரிய பட்டியலையே அவர் முருகனிடம் தருகிறார்; தனது பக்தர்களுக்கு முருகன் அவர்கள் கேட்டதையும், கேட்காமல் விட்ட அரிய பல செல்வத்தையும் அளிப்பான் என்பது அவருக்குத் தெரியும். 

அவர் ‘வேணும்’ என்று மென்மையாக கேட்பதை இங்கு பார்ப்போம். 

1) கதிர்காமம்

உடுக்கத் துகில் வேணு நீள்பசி

  யவிக்கக் கனபானம் வேணுநல்

    ஒளிக்குப் புனலாடை வேணுமெய்  – யுறுநோயை

ஒழிக்கப் பரிகாரம் வேணுமுள்

  இருக்கச் சிறுநாரி வேணுமொர்

    படுக்கத் தனிவீடு வேணுமிவ்  – வகையாவுங்

கிடைத்துக் க்ருஹவாசி யாகிய

  மயக்கக் கடலாடி நீடிய

    கிளைக்குப் பரிபால னாயுயி  – ரவமேபோம்

க்ருபைச்சித் தமுஞான போதமு

  மழைத்துத் தரவேணு மூழ்பவ

   கிரிக்குட் சுழல்வேனை யாளுவ  – தொருநாளே

பாடல் எண் 638 – உடுக்கத் துகில் வேணும் எனத் தொடங்கும் பாடல்

பொருள் : உடுப்பதற்கு உடைகள் வேண்டும்.

பெரும் பசியைத் தணிக்க உயரந்த சுவைநீர் வேண்டும்.

தேகம் நல்ல ஒளி வீசும் பொருட்டு நீரும் பட்டாடையும் வேண்டும். உடல் நோயை ஒழிக்க பரிகாரம் ( நல்ல மருந்துகள்) வேண்டும்.

வீட்டுக்குள் இருக்க இளமையான மனைவி வேண்டும்.

படுத்துக் கொள்ள ஒரு தனி வீடு வேண்டும்.

இத்தனை நலன்கள் யாவும் எனக்குக் கிடைக்கப் பெற்று, குடும்பஸ்தன் என்றவனாக ஆகி அந்த வாழ்வு என்ற மயக்கக் கடலில் மூழ்கி, பெரிய சுற்றத்தார் கூட்டத்தைக் காப்பாற்றுபவனாகி, முடிவில் என்னுயிர் வீணாகக் கழிந்து விடும்.

கருணை உள்ளத்தையும் சிவஞான போதத்தையும் நீ என்னைக் கூப்பிட்டு வைத்துத் தந்தருள வேண்டும்.

இந்தப் பாடலில் ஏழு “வேணும்’ களைப் பார்க்கிறோம்.

அனைத்தும் முக்கியமானவை. ஒரு இல்லறத்தானுக்குத் தேவையானவை. இருக்க இடம், உடுக்க உடை, புசிக்க உணவு, நோய்க்கான மருந்து, இளம் மனைவி என்று இந்தப் பட்டியல் வாழ்க்கையின் முக்கிய அம்சங்களைச் சுட்டிக் காட்டி விடுகிறது.

2) திருச்செந்தூர் 

               துயர்மேவி

மங்கை யழுது விழவே யமபடர்கள்  

  நின்று சருவ மலமே யொழுகவுயிர்

    மங்கு பொழுது கடிதே மயிலின்மிசை – வரவேணும்
 
பாடல் எண் 68 –  தொந்தி சரிய எனத் தொடங்கும் பாடல்

பொருள் : மிக்க துயரம் அடைந்து மனைவி அழுது விழவும், யமதூதர்கள் வந்து நின்று உயிரைக் கவரப் போராடவும், மலம் கட்டுப்பாடு இன்றி ஒழுகவும், உயிர் மங்கும் போது அந்தக் கடைசி நேரத்தில் முருகா, நீ விரைவில் மயிலின் மேல் வர வேண்டும்.

3) பழநி 

செவிடு குருடு வடிவு குறைவு

 சிறிது மிடியு – மணுகாதே 

அமரர் வடிவு மதிக குலமு

 மறிவு நிறையும்  – வரவே நின்

அருள தருளி யெனையு மனதொ

  டடிமை கொளவும் – வரவேண்டும்

பாடல் எண் 168 –  திமிர உததி  எனத் தொடங்கும் பாடல்

பொருள் : செவிடு, குருடு, அங்கஹீனம், சிறிதேனும் வறுமை என்பவை ஏதும் இல்லாது, தேவ லக்ஷணமும், உயர் குடிப்பிறப்பும், அறிவு நிறையும் வரவே, அறிவும், நீதி ஒழுக்கமும் எனக்கு வருமாறு உனது திருவருளைத் தந்தருளி என்னையும் நீ மனம் வைத்து உன் அடிமையாக ஆட்கொள்ள நீ வரவேண்டும்.

4) சுவாமிமலை  

மிகுத்த கனமதுறு நீள் சவுக்ய

 சகலசெல்வ யோகமிக்க – பெருவாழ்வு

தகைமைசிவ ஞானமுத்தி பரகதியு நீகொடுத்து

  தவிபுரிய வேணு நெய்த்த – வடிவேலா

பாடல் எண் 216-  சரண கமலாலயத்தை  எனத் தொடங்கும் பாடல்

பொருள் : மிக்க பெருமையைத் தரும் நீடித்த சுகம், எல்லாவித செல்வம், அதிர்ஷ்டம், நிறைந்த பெருவாழ்வு, நன்மதிப்பு, சிவஞானம், முக்தியாம் மேலான கதி இவை யாவும் நீ கொடுத்து உதவி புரிய வேண்டுகின்றேன். பளபளப்பும் கூர்மையும் உடைய வேலனே!

5) காஞ்சீபுரம்

எத்தனையி நெஞ்சில் எத்தனமு யங்கி

  இத்தனையி லஞ்ச லெனவேணும்

பாடல் எண் 344 –  நச்சரவமென்று  எனத் தொடங்கும் பாடல்

பொருள் : எத்தனையோ எண்ணங்களை மனதில் கொண்டு, முயற்சிகளை மேற்கொண்டு செய்பவளாகிய என்னை, இந்த அளவிலேயே அஞ்சல் (அஞ்சாதே) என்று கூறி அருள வேண்டும்.

 குறிப்பு : இது அகத்துறையில் தன்னை நாயகியாகப் பாவித்து அருணகிரிநாதர் பாடிய திருப்புகழாகும்.

திரு ச.நாகராஜன் அவர்கள் எழுதியுள்ள ‘அறிவியல் வியக்கும் ஆன்மீகம்’ என்ற புத்தகம் ஆழ்ந்த ஆய்வுக்குப் பிறகு எழுதப்பட்டுள்ளது.

திரு ச.நாகராஜனின் குடும்பம் நாள்தோறும் கணபதி ஹோமம் நடத்தி ஆன்மீக சக்தி படைத்த குடும்பமாகும். நமது நாட்டு மற்றும் வெளிநாட்டுச் சிந்தனையாளர்களின் புத்தகங்கள் மற்றும் கட்டுரைகளைத் தேடிப் பிடித்து வெளியிட்டிருப்பது பாராட்டுக்குரியது.

பாரத நாட்டின் தனிச் சிறப்பான ஆன்மீகம் பற்றி நமது நாட்டினர்க்கே தெரிவதில்லை. இதன் காரணமாக தேசியத் தன்மான உணர்வு கிட்டத் தட்ட இல்லையென்றே கூறி விடலாம்.

காலம் காலமாக வானத்தில் சுடர் விட்டுப் பிரகாசிக்கும் நட்சத்திரங்கள் எல்லா இனத்தவரையும் எல்லா மதத்தினரையும் கவர்ந்துள்ளன.

பாரத தேசத்தில் புராதன மகரிஷிகள் ‘வானத்து ஒளியை ஆராய்வோம்’ என்று முழங்கினர்.

ரிஷிகளின் இந்தக் கூற்றை அறிந்தோ அறியாமலோ ராயல் அஸ்ட்ரானமிகல் சொஸைடியும் ‘எதெல்லாம் பிரகாசிக்கிறதோ அதெல்லாம் உற்றுக் கவனிக்கப்பட வேண்டியதே (Quic Quid Nitit Notandum) என்ற தொடரைத் தன் லட்சிய வாசகமாக (Motto) வைத்திருப்பது ஆச்சரியத்தைத் தருகிறது!

தேவர்களின் உறைவிடம் என்று வானத்தை நமது மகரிஷிகள் வர்ணித்துள்ளனர். மிகக் கடுமையாகத் தவம் புரிந்தோரே வானத்தில் நட்சத்திரமாக ஒளி விட்டுப் பிரகாசிக்கின்றனர் என்பது ஹிந்துக்களின் நம்பிக்கை. துருவ நட்சத்திரம் இதற்கு சிறந்த உதாரணமாகும்.

ரிக் வேதத்தில் வானவியல் பிரமிக்கத்தக்க விதத்தில் நுணுக்கமாகக் கூறப்பட்டிருப்பதை அறிஞர்கள் அறிவர்.

இதை சமீபத்தில் அறிஞர் சுபாஷ் கக் நிரூபித்துள்ளார்.

1900ம் ஆண்டிலிருந்தே பாலகங்காதர திலகர், காளிநத் முகர்ஜி, ஜி.வி.ராகவராவ் போன்று பல அறிஞர்கள் ஹிந்து புராணங்களுக்கும் நட்சத்திரங்களுக்கும் உள்ள தொடர்பை ஆராய ஆரம்பித்தனர்.

ஆனால் நவீன அறிவியல் இந்தப் புராணக் கூற்றுக்களை அப்படியே ஒத்திருக்கிறது என்பதை நான் வியப்போடு பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். சர் ஜேம்ஸ் ஜீன்ஸ், வில்லியம் ஹெர்ஷல் போன்ற வானவியல் விஞ்ஞானிகளின் நூல்களை ஆர்வத்துடன் படிக்கவே இந்தக் கருத்து உறுதிப்பட்டது.

புராணத்தில் கூறப்படும் ஒவ்வொரு வரியும் வார்த்தைக்கு வார்த்தை அப்படியே நூறு சதவிகிதம் நவீன விஞ்ஞானிகளின் ஆய்வு அறிக்கைகளுடனும், கூற்றுக்களுடனும் ஒத்திருப்பது பிரமிப்பைத் தருகிறது! தொடர்ந்து இது பற்றிய ஆய்வுகளையும், நூல்களையும், செய்தித் தாள்களில் அவ்வப்பொழுது வெளியான செய்திகளையும் சேகரிக்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். விளைவு – இந்த நூல்!

விஞ்ஞானம் மெய்ஞானம் தொடரில் நிறைய கட்டுரைகள் மஞ்சரி மாத இதழில் வெளி வந்தன. இவற்றைப் பாராட்டி அவ்வப்பொழுது ஆக்கமும் ஊக்கமும் தந்து வெளியிட்ட மஞ்சரி ஆசிரியர் திரு எஸ். லட்சுமணன் அவர்களுக்கு என் உளமார்ந்த நன்றி.

Reflexive verb Kol கொள் is used to say what you do it for yourself. If one does something to oneself and then reflexive verb Kol is used as a suffix to the converbial form of a verb.

In short, Converbial form of a verb+ KOL+ PGN

Aadi , Paadi are the converbial of the verbs Aaadu=Dance; Paadu= sing.

The converbial forms are Aadi, Paadi respectively.

You add Kol according to PGN

First person past tense

Naan aadik konden = நான் ஆடிக் கொண்டேன்

யாக, யக்ஞங்கள்

The wonder about 2000 year old Tamil Sangam literature is there is lot of information about Rajasuya Yagam (raaja suuya yaagam) Aswamedha Yaagam and many other Yagas. Puranamuru verse 166 gives very interesting information about 21 types of Yagas (FIRE CEREMONY) and 14 Types of Cows and other essentials for a fire ritual. There are other verses about Rajasuyam, Asvamedham, Yupa Pillars, Eagle shaped Altar of Karikal Choza, Deer hide dress of Yaga Performers, Dharma Patnis, Indra’s Amrita etc.

The significance increases because of the Sanskrit words Yupa (yuupa) Pillars, and references to Gotra names Kaundinya , Kausika, Vatula, Kavya, Gautama and Bharadwaja

Nachchinarkiniyar, the most famous commentator of Sangam literature was a Brahmin from Madurai belonging to Bhaaradwaaja Gotra. He was the one who wrote highest number of commentaries like Adi Shankara. He proudly declared that ‘Madurai resident Bhaaradwja Gotra Nachinakiniar wrote this’ at the end of each commentary. Without his commentary, no one would have understood Sangam Tamil poems.

Pura nanuru (naanuuru) verse 166 is about Paarppaan Kaundinya Gotra Vishnu Dasan of Choza Country Puunchaatruur sung by Avur Mulankizar (aavuur muulan kizaar)

It gives very valuable information about Hindu Yagas that were performed 2000 years ago in Tamil country. Dr R Ngaswami, great Historian and Archaeologist gives a lot of details about Gotras. U ve Swaminatha Iyer (U. VE. SA ), the doyen of Tamil literature , gives the list of 21 types of Yagas done by Vishnu Dasan of Purannanuu.

Vishnu Dasan is translated and Tamilized as Vinnan thaayaan. Paarppaan is the word used for Brahmin in this verse.

Dwija இரு பிறப்பாளர் is also used by Tamil Sangam Poets in addition to Anthanar and Paarppaan இரு பிறப்பாளர், பார்ப்பான், அந்தணர். Dwija mean one who has Two Births. Though it meant Brahmana, Kshatriya and Vaisya, mostly it meant Brahmins. One birth happens when the boy comes out of womb of his mother and another birth happens when he is baptised with Puunuul, the sacred thread (Yajnopaveetam).

ANTHANAR can be applied only to Brahmins because they are the one who are attributed with Six Duties. Seers/Sanyasins/Ascetics are not allowed to do fire rituals. Sangam literature clearly says ‘Six Duties Anthanar’ அறுதொழில் அந்தணர்.

You who are descended from men renowned
for their superb learning, men who
performed to perfection all twenty-one
kinds of sacrifice, who confirmed
the truth, never thinking it false,
who understood lies that resembled truth,
thus defeating those who would contend
with the one ancient work of six sections
and four divisions, focused on Righteousness,
never swerving from the well-chosen words
of the Primal Being with his long, matted hair!
You glow in your black antelope skin
from dry forest land, needed for the ritual,
worn over the thread around your shoulder!
Your beloved wives, worthy of your high
station, flawlessly faithful, free of harshness,
renowned for their virtue, donning the sacred ornaments,
their foreheads small, their hips and thighs large and wide,
of few words and rich abundant hair, request their ritual responsibilities!
Whether in settled land or jungle, omitting
none of the fourteen sites, you pour out
more ghee than there is water, sacrifice
more times than there are numbers, spread
your fame wider than the earth, and at
the great moment when a difficult sacrifice is completed,
may we always see you in your high and perfect state, offering hospitality!
Once I have eaten, devoured the food and mounted
a chariot, I will celebrate my luck and then go off
to our city with its cool bathing places ever renewed
by the fresh waters of the Kaviri River spread
with flowers when above the tall gold-bearing mountain
in the west, the thunder roars! May you be
as firmly established over the earth
as Himalaya where the bamboo grows and rising mountains block the clouds!

நன்று ஆய்ந்த நீள் நிமிர் சடை

முது முதல்வன் வாய் போகாது,

ஒன்று புரிந்த ஈர் இரண்டின்,

ஆறு உணர்ந்த ஒரு முது நூல்

இகல் கண்டோர் மிகல் சாய்மார்,            5

மெய் அன்ன பொய் உணர்ந்து,

பொய் ஓராது மெய் கொளீஇ,

மூ ஏழ் துறையும் முட்டு இன்று போகிய

உரைசால் சிறப்பின் உரவோர் மருக!

வினைக்கு வேண்டி நீ பூண்ட  10

புலப் புல்வாய்க் கலைப் பச்சை

சுவல் பூண் ஞாண்மிசைப் பொலிய;

மறம் கடிந்த அருங் கற்பின்,

அறம் புகழ்ந்த வலை சூடி,

சிறு நுதல், பேர் அகல் அல்குல்,            15

சில சொல்லின், பல கூந்தல், நின்

நிலைக்கு ஒத்த நின் துணைத் துணைவியர்

தமக்கு அமைந்த தொழில் கேட்ப;

காடு என்றா நாடு என்று ஆங்கு

ஈர் ஏழின் இடம் முட்டாது,             20

நீர் நாண நெய் வழங்கியும்,

எண் நாணப் பல வேட்டும்,

மண் நாணப் புகழ் பரப்பியும்,

அருங் கடிப் பெருங் காலை,

விருந்துற்ற நின் திருந்து ஏந்து நிலை,             25

என்றும், காண்கதில் அம்ம, யாமே! குடாஅது

பொன் படு நெடு வரைப் புயலேறு சிலைப்பின்,

பூ விரி புது நீர்க் காவிரி புரக்கும்

தண் புனல் படப்பை எம் ஊர் ஆங்கண்,

உண்டும் தின்றும் ஊர்ந்தும் ஆடுகம்;                 30

செல்வல் அத்தை, யானே; செல்லாது,

மழை அண்ணாப்ப நீடிய நெடு வரைக்

கழை வளர் இமயம் போல,

நிலீஇயர் அத்தை, நீ நிலம்மிசையானே?

திணை வாகை;

துறை பார்ப்பன வாகை.

சோணாட்டுப் பூஞ்சாற்றூர்ப் பார்ப்பான் கௌணியன் விண்ணந்தாயனை ஆவூர் மூலங்கிழார் பாடியது.

Following are the details we get from this Purananuru poem:

1.Paarppaan Vishnu dasan performed so many Yaagaas and as result of his innumerable Yagnaas that water was shamed (out performed or belittled) because of the Ghee he used in the Yagas, Number was shamed by the count of Yagas he performed, earth was shamed because of his far  spreading fame (if one reads the Bhumi Sukta of Atharvana Veda, one would get the full meaning of this word).

2.Vedas are Fuor in number and they are studied with Six ancillary subjects.

3. Vedas are recited by Shiva for ever. The word used here was MUTHU MAKAN ( I would interpret it as Brahma)

4.Vishnu Dasan knew what is Truth and what is Untruth and he stick to truth. Here the interpretation by few scholars says that untrue things were Buddhism and Jainism. But I would interpret is as Anti Ritual Hindu Sects. One of the six sects (Meemaasakas) said Vedic Rituals are more important than anything else. One other sect said they are not that important. Atheism (Charruvakam—chaaruvaakam—) , part of Hinduism, said that Vedas themselves are no important. Chaaruvaaka means pleasant  words- sweet words.

5.Vishnu Dasan was well versed in all the 21 types of Yagas. Manu smrti mentioned them separately. But U VE SA. Gives us the list of 21 Yagas.

6.Women in Yagas

The verse also shows us that two women are needed for a man to do fire rituals. The man wore a uniform made of deer hide. Women wore the uniform known as Saalakam

7. Two X Seven Cows

The ghee (clarified butter ) for the Yaga, Yagnas are collected from Seven Wild Cows in the forest and Seven Domestic Cows.

(My comments: Hindus were great wild life lovers. They protected and respected even wild cows and wild bulls)

8.This poem is included in the genre called  ‘Paarppana Vaakai’ which meant Brahmin Victory. It means that a Brahmin is considered Victorious only when he performed all types of Yagas (Havan ceremonies)

GOTRAS

Dr R Nagaswami, great historian and archaeologist, was the only Tamil who was well versed in Tamil, Sanskrit and English. World famous universities invited him to deliver lectures on various subjects. As an author of scores of books and thousands of articles, he published one book in Tamil titled YAAVARUM KELIR (year 1973). It has an article describing the Tamil Brahmins as found in Sangam Tamil literature and later inscriptions. No one has listed the Gotras like him.  Later K C Lakshminarayanan has written a voluminous book in Tamil as well detailing the Vedic thoughts in Tamil literature.

Gotras in Sangam Tamil literature:

Kaundinya ,Vaatula , Kausika ,Atreya , Kaavya ,Kaasyapa , Gargya, Gautama, (Agastya)

By Pallava times (400 CE to 800 CE) we come across 32 Gotras in Tamil Nadu and Andhra from their copper plates, according to Dr R Nagaswami.

Sangam poets proudly declared their Gotras and Gotras are prefixed with their names.

In the next part we will look at the Yagas and Yagnas done by Tamil Kings.

நீடித்த ஆரோக்கிய வாழ்விற்கு ஆயுர் வேதம் தரும் அன்புரை!

நம் முன்னோர்கள் நீடித்த வாழ்வை ஒருவன் எப்பாடுபட்டேனும் அடைதல் வேண்டும் என்று வலியுறுத்தியதோடு அப்படிப்பட்ட நீடித்த வாழ்க்கை ஆரோக்கியத்துடன் இருத்தல் வேண்டும் என்றும் வலியுறுத்தினர்.

பஸ்யேம சரத சதம்; ஜீவேம சரத சதம் – ஒளிரும் சூரியனை நூறு ஆண்டுகள் பார்ப்போம்; நூறு ஆண்டுகள் வாழ்வோம் என இப்படி அன்றாடம் நூறு ஆண்டு வாழ்வதை உறுதிப் படுத்திக் கொள்ளச் சொல்கிறது வேதம்.

நோய் நொடியில்லா வாழ்வு வாழ்வதற்கான அன்புரைகளை முன்னோர்கள் பல அற நூல்களிலும், வாழ்க்கை முறை நூல்களிலும் பழமொழிகள் வாயிலாம் கூறினர்.

அவற்றில் சில:

தினமும் சூரியோதயத்திற்கு முன்பாக எழுதல் வேண்டும்.

பற்களை நன்கு சுத்தம் செய்வதோடு நாக்கையும் சுத்தம் செய்தல் அவசியம்.

கண்களையும் நீரினால் நன்கு கழுவுதல் வேண்டும்.

வெந்நீரில் குளித்தல் நலம்.  மசாஜ் செய்து கொள்வது நல்லது.

வெந்நீர் அருந்துதல் ஜீரணத்திற்கு உதவும். சாப்பிடும் போது நீரை அருந்துதல் கூடாது.

வேகமாக உணவை உட்கொள்வது வாயு பிரச்சினையை உருவாக்கும்.

நிதானமான சுவைத்துச் சாப்பிடுதல் அவசியம். அமைதியாக யாருடனும் பேசாமல் உணவில் மட்டுமே கவனம் செலுத்தல் வேண்டும்.

வயிறு முட்ட முட்டச் சாப்பிடாமல் ஒரு சிறிது காலியாக இருக்கும் படி உணவின் அளவை நிர்ணயித்துக் கொள்ளல் வேண்டும்.

வாத, பித்த, சிலேஷம் என மூவகைப் பட்ட உடல் வாகுவில் நாம் எந்த வகை என்பதை அறிந்து அதற்குத் தக உணவுத் திட்டத்தை அமைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். ஒவ்வாதவற்றை அறவே நீக்க வேண்டும்.

உணவு மிகவும் குளிர்ந்து போனதாகவும் இருக்கக் கூடாது; மிக மிக சூடானதாகவும் இருக்கக் கூடாது. அன்றாடம் அவ்வப்பொழுது சமைத்த உணவே உடலுக்கு ஏற்றது.

நினைத்த போது சாப்பிடுதல் என்பது அறவே கூடாது. காலை உணவு, மதிய உணவு, இரவு உணவு இவற்றிற்கான நேரத்தின் படியே உணவை உட்கொள்ளல் வேண்டும்.

இரவு உறங்கப் போகும் முன்னர் குறைந்த பட்சம் இரண்டு மணி நேரத்திற்கு முன்னதாகவே உணவை முடித்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.

சாப்பிட்டவுடன் நூறு அடி நடக்க வேண்டும். இரவு உணவிற்குப் பின்னர் இப்படி நடப்பது ‘சத பதம்’ எனப்படும்.

 உடல் பயிற்சி, யோகாசனம், மூச்சுப் பயிற்சி – இவற்றை தக்க ஆசான் மூலம் கற்று கடைப்பிடிக்க வேண்டும்.

குளிர் பானங்களை அருந்துதல் கூடாது. தற்காலத்தில் வரும் பாக்கேஜ் உணவு, நொறுக்குத் தீனி இவற்றை விலக்க வேண்டும்.

மதுவை அறவே நீக்க வேண்டும்.

சிகரட், போதைப் பொருள்கள் ஆயுளைக் குறைக்கும்.

சைவ உணவே சாலச் சிறந்தது. பச்சை கறிகாய்களை நன்கு உரிய முறையில் வேக வைத்துச் சாப்பிட வேண்டும்.

இரவு உறக்கம் இன்றியமையாதது.

உணவில் பசு நெய் சேர்த்தல் வேண்டும்.

உடலுக்குத் தக பால், தயிர் இவற்றைச் சேர்க்க வேண்டும்.

பழ வகைகளை அவ்வப்பொழுது எடுத்து உண்ண வேண்டும்.

சர்க்கரை மற்றும் உப்பு ஆகியவற்றின் அளவு சரியாக இருத்தல் வேண்டும்.

(வேகமாக வாகனங்களை ஓட்டுதல் உட்பட்ட) உடலுக்கு ஒவ்வாத சாகஸ வேலைகளைச் செய்தல் கூடாது.

பெரியோர்களின் ஆசீர்வாதங்களைப் பெறுதலும், இறை வழிபாடும், அவ்வப்பொழுது கோவில் தரிசனமும், தல, தீர்த்த யாத்திரையும் முக்கியம்.

ஆன்மீக உரைகளை வாய்ப்புக் கிடைத்த போதெல்லாம் கேட்க வேண்டும். ராமாயண, மஹாபாரத இதிஹாஸங்களைப் படிப்பதோடு வீட்டில் உள்ள இளம் குழந்தைகளுக்கும் அதைச் சொல்ல வேண்டும்.

(தொலைக்காட்சி பார்த்தலை மிகுந்த கட்டுப்பாடுடன் ஒரு அளவுடன் வைத்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும்.)

இசை கேட்டல் நல்லது.

அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையில் நகைச்சுவை முக்கியம். அனைத்தையும்  மிக சீரியஸாக எடுத்தல் மன அழுத்தத்தை ஏற்படுத்தும். ஆகவே நகைச்சுவை நூல்களைப் படித்தல் அவசியம்.

தன்னை மூன்றாவது நபராக வைத்து தியானம் செய்வது அனைத்துப் பிரச்சினைகளும் தீர்வதற்கான ஒரு அருமையான வழி. இப்படிச் செய்யும் போது பிரச்சினைகளுக்குத் தீர்வுகள் தாமாக வரும்.

ஊரிலுள்ள வைத்தியரை நன்கு மதிப்பதோடு அவரின் வாழ்க்கை நலத்தை மனதில் கொண்டு அவரை ஆதரிக்க வேண்டும். அவர் கூறும் பரிந்துரைகளை அப்படியே மேற்கொண்டு நடக்க வேண்டும்.

வாஸ்து அமைப்பிலான வசிப்பிடம் அவசியம் தேவை.

நீர், காற்று, இடம் ஆகியவற்றின் சுத்தத்தை மனதில் கொண்டு வாழ்தல் வேண்டும்.

உயிர் வாழ் இனங்களுடன் அன்புடன் நடந்து கொண்டால் இயற்கை நம்மை நன்கு வாழ வைக்கும். சுற்றுப்புறச் சூழல் மேம்பாட்டை மனதில் கொண்டு நடப்பதால் சுற்றுப்புறமும் மேம்படும்; சமுதாயத்தில் கொரானா போன்றவையும் பரவாது.

இப்படி சொந்த நலம், குடும்ப நலம். சமுதாய நலம் என அனைத்து நலங்களையும் கூறும் ஆயுர் வேத நூல்களைப் படிப்போம்.

ஆயுர் வேத வழி நடப்போம்; அருமையாக வாழ்வோம்!

Paarrppaan பார்ப்பான் and Anthanar are used in 2000 year old Sangam Tamil literature to denote Brahmins. It is an exact translation of the Sanskrit word Brahmaana. All mean the same. One who looks at or looking for Brahman, that is God.

Anthanar – one who does inward search; inward look. Scientists do research about outward things- from Ant to Astronomy. Brahmins do inward search to see Brahman/God and merge with him. That is the reason this word is used for all Saints as well.

அந்தணர்= அந்தத்தை அணவுவார்

Paarppaan – பார்ப்பான் Of late this word has derived some negative connotation like the pure words Pariah and Harijan. Both these words had good connotation once.

Paarppan comes from the verb Paar= to see, to look at.

Since Brahmins are inward searching, inward looking, seeking Brahman, they are called SEERS.

Mr Ramanthan Chettiyar who wrote a commentary on Pathitruppaththu using old commentary, gives three interpretations for Paarppaar:

1.one who thinks about him.

2.one who thinks about the God who created him

3.one who sees/reads the knowledgeable books to reach Him.

From Sangam Tamil period to Tirumular period of ninth century CE, this word is used with good connotation. Even in English, saints are called SEERS, exact translation of Paarppan= one who sees (God)

Bharati, Greatest of the Tamil poets, who was a Brahmin, used this word in one or two of his poems. He condemned Pro Brahmin Smritis and ridiculed the Brahmins who were serving the British government or eating but doing nothing.

“சூத்திரனுக்கொரு நீதி தண்டச்
சோறுண்ணும் பார்ப்புக்கு வேறொரு நீதி,

சாத்திரம் சொல்லிடு மாயின்
அது சாத்திரம் அன்று சதியென்று கண்டோம்”.

Going back to Sangam period, we see Paarppans were held in high esteem. Here is the proof:

Post Sangam poet  Tiruvalluvar used both Anthanar and Paarppaan.

Six tasks/duties of Anthanar

1.Reciting Vedas, 2.Teaching Vedas, 3.Receiving Donations (Dhaana), 4.Giving Donations, 5.Doing Yagas (yaagaas), 6.Helping others to perform Yaga, Yagna, Homa, Havan (Fire ceremonies).

The six duties of brahmins are listed in Pathitrup paththu 24-6/8 (Shad Karma Niradha in Sanskrit)

Important points

Earlier we saw the oldest and the greatest of the Pandya Kings Pal Yaaga Saalai Mudu Kudumi Peruvazuthi bows his head to pay respects only twice in his life. He bowed his head when Brahmins raised their hands to bless him. He did the same when he went round the Trayambaka Temple (Shiva Templei n Madurai).

Now we see the same thing with a Chera king where the word Paarppaar (seer) is used.

Kabilar (in Tamil kapilar), the Brahmin poet who composed the highest number of poems in Sangam literature, praises the Chera King Selva Katungko Vaaziaathan as “one who bows only to Paarppaar/Brahmins”.

This poet Kabilar proudly declared in two places I AM THE ANTHANAN/BRAHMIN (Puran 200, Puran m 201) He was the one who shattered the caste barrier. He took Chieftain Pari’s two daughters to various chieftains to get them married. He treated them as his own daughters who were Kshatriyas by birth.

Important Brahmin Anecdote

One important Brahmin incident is reported in Puram 43, where the word Paarppar is used. It is composed by Damappal Kannan (probably a translation of Narasimha Krishna; Daamapal= Teeksna Dhamstra= Narasimha; Kannan= Kannaiah= Krishna)

Once Choza King Nalankilli’s brother Maavalaththaan and this poet Mr Narasimha were playing a board game where dice were used.

In an angry mood (probably he was losing), king’s brother threw the dice on the Brahmin poet. He also became angry and called king’s brother a ‘Bastard’ saying none of the Choza kings ever hurt a Brahmin/Paarppar. Both of them immediately composed themselves and calmed themselves and shook hands saying ‘Sorry! Sorry!’

This shows that no one dared to attack or criticise a Brahmin. If at all Brahmins are criticised that were done by Brahmin poets themselves. We see that in Kabilar’s poems and Bharatiyar’s poems. Kabilar criticises one leprous sex addict in one of his poems.

Another important Paarppaar/ Brahmin reference

Aalaththur kizaar, a Sangam poet sings about Choza king Kula mutraththu thunjiya Killivalavan.

The first four lines are from Valmiki Ramayana 4-34-12

The poet says there is atonement for even Bruhnu haththi (killing foetus= abortion or rape), Brahma haththi (killing Brahmins) and Go haththi (killing Cow); but no atonement for ungratefulness (thankless, unthankful); they will go to hell according to dharma sastras – Puram 34 by Aalaththur kizaar.

 HINDU DHARMA – A WAY OF LIFE!

Srimat Upendramohan was born on the 11^th of August, 1872 at Halishahar, a small village on the bank of Ganga, 30 miles north of Kolkata. Everybody understood the purpose of His Avathar as he was an embodiment of Shastras. He founded the great weekly magazine Truth and had written wonderful articles for a period of 17 years from 15^th April 1934 to 17^th March 1951 till the date of leaving his mortal coil.

 The magazine Truth, thus started in 1934, is doing wonderful service to the humanity by explaining the true meaning of Shastras, in Parama Purusha Sreemat Upendramohan’s way!

 I started reading this wonderful magazine from 1962 and was attracted to it. In my valuable collection, I have fortysix years of Truth magazine (1976-2022 – approximately 2380 issues) with me. This immense treasure shows me the WAY and leads me towards a Dharmic Goal.

Sanathan Dharama (Hindu religion as it is being called now) by its Shastras says to all men and women, “ Do this”, and “Don’t Do this”. In order to make sure that the men and women are able to understand the truth behind its guidelines, it offers you the reason. And in order to realize fully, it offers the examples also.

 These three are called as : Pratiknja,  Hethu , Dhrusthantha

In Sanathan Dharma,  Vedas are Pratiknja.

Smrithis and sutras are Hethu.

The Ithihasas (Ramayan, Maharabharat)and Puranas are Dhrushtantha.

 The Vedas are in two forms viz Karma Kanda and Gnana Kanda.

 Karma Kanda gives you the guidelines as to what is to be done and what is not to be done.

Gnana Kanda says, “This is this”, “Meditate on this” and “Realize This”. These secret sayings in Vedantha are called Upanishads.

 Vedas’ commandments  are like the orders of a King or in Modern days, as that of told in the Constitution of India.

But there is a difference between the Vedas and Constitution.

Vedas are Divine and Constitutional guidelines are ‘Man Made’ which may be amended from time to time.

 Saints and sages declare that Vedas are Divine Sounds and it comes from the Supreme Brahman.

 Smiritis, Sutras and Idihasa Puranas are Yukthi and Dhrusthantha. Anybody can understand the secrets by reading them.

 Bhagavan Krishna declares in Gita (Chapter 13 , Sloka no 4) thus:

 ṛiṣhibhir bahudhā gītaṁ chhandobhir vividhaiḥ pṛithak

brahma-sūtra-padaiśh chaiva hetumadbhir viniśhchitaiḥ

“The truth about the Ksetra and the Ksetranjna has been expounded by the Rishis or seers, in manifold ways; again, it has been seaparately stated in different Vedic chants and also in the conclusive and resonated texts of the Brahmasutras.

 Mahabharat, Srimat Bhagavat, Yoga Vasishtam etc reveal the secrets of Gnana kanda of Vedas by giving Dhrusthantha.

Mahabharat explains Karma kanda in some of its parvas and Gnana Kanda in some other parvas. Hence it is called as Fifth Veda.

 Vedas, Smiritis, Sutras, Ramayan, Mahabharat, Puranas are called as Shastras, in total.

 We should learn patiently Shastras. If it is not possible we have to seek the guidance of Sages or Vedavith(s).

 In the modern days, even if it is not possible, what to do?

 Here comes the solution. Realising the difficulties of the poor men and having sympathy over them Parama Purusha Sreemat Upendramohan started writing articles and books.

 The magazine Truth gives us all that is needed – that is to say, the Shastric Gnan.

The wonders of sound was scientifically researched for the past two hundred years. Ernst Florence Chaldni (birth 30-11-1755, Death 3-4-1823), a German physicist and musician carried out very many experiments.

When a violin bow was drawn vertically across the rim of metal piece the sound waves produced certain patterns in sand sprinkled on the plate. Different musical tones would cause the sand particles to move into geometric patterns.

 In recent years, further research on this was carried out by Fabien, a musician, along with French Scientist Joel Sterheimer. He discovered that elementary particles vibrate according to musical laws.

 In the 1960s Hans Jenny, a Swiss Scientist, spent over ten years conducting experiments to discover the effects of sound waves on materials placed on metal plates vibrated with sound. Materials such as glycerin, mercury, gel, powder and iron fillings were used. He photographed the patterns created.

He found that low frequency sounds produced simple geometric shapes in the materials. As the sound frequency was increased, these simple frames would break up and more complex patterns would appear. The sound ‘OH’ would produce a perfect circle.  The sound ‘OM’ produced a pattern that resembles the Shri Yantra; the ancient mandala for ‘OM’ used in India for thousands of years!

The famous Russian Scientist Alexy Pavlovich Kulaichev made a thorough research on Sri Yantra in 1987 and published a paper. He revealed very many secrets of Sri Yantra and ascertained that one who worships this Yantra with concentration will achieve greater success, peace, health and wealth.

 The famous scientist JBS Haldane told that  “The Gayatri Mantra should be carved on the doors of every laboratory of the world”.

 Carl Sagan and the Austrian born American physicist, systems theorist Fritjof Capra are best known scientists who admired Hindu Wisdom and revealed the secrets behind the dance of Nataraja.

William Somerset Maugham, in his book, ‘Points of views’ says, “The Hindu religion is not only a religion but also a philosophy, not only a religion and philosophy, it is a WAY OF LIFE.

 The long list of scientists who admire Hindu Shastras is a never ending one.

Converbial Negative is used to say WITHOUT.

It is formed in two ways:

1.      You add இல்லாமல் Ilaamal  after a Noun or a Pronoun

2.      with infinitive of any Tamil verb to mean WITHOUT

With verbs you add ஆமல், +ஆது

Tamils followed Sanskrit scriptures verbatim in describing the Brahmins. Brahmins are called Devas on Earth (Bhuu Surar) and People with Six Tasks/Duties (Shad Karma Niradha). 2000 year old Sangam Tamil poets translated it as Bhusurar and Aru Thozil Anthanar (பூசுரர், அறுதொழில் அந்தணர்). One more description about Brahmins is that they are as gentle and soft like cows (ஆ வினும் இனிய அந்தணர்) is found in both Tamil and Sanskrit works. Hindus considered Cows and Brahmins are sacred and must be protected. 2600 years ago Buddha also praised Brahmins sky high and said that they can murder or dislodge a king and go unpunished (See the whole chapter 26 in Dhammapada). Tamils also sang about Brahmins and Cows together (Go Bramnebhya:).

Some people gave a wrong interpretation for Anthanar as saints or seers; Sangam poets showed them wrong. They said Six Task Anthanar, Anthanar Vedam, Anthana of Four Veda, Anthanar Naan Marai debunking the half baked, jaundice eyed “scholars”.

Anthanar Vedam (Brahmins Veda)- Maduraik Kaanchi- Lines 654-656

Anthanar Arumarai (Brahmins rare/excellent Veda)- Puram.363-8/9; Pari 1-13; 2-57; 3-14; 4-65

Vedas are coming from Shiva or Brahma- Puram 166-12

Brahmins reciting Vedas with  intonation is compared to the humming of the bees and beetles in the very early morning- Maduraik Kaanchi- Lines 654-656

The verb used here is singing the Vedas (so sweet); line 468 also used the verb sing. He added excellent (Sirantha) Veda.

The reason for using the verb Sing (Paada, Paadi) may be interpreted as Sama Veda recitation.

Paripaatal thirattu 27-7/11 praised Madurai Brahmins . The poet says that in the Cholza capital town Uraiyur and Chera capital town Vanji people wake up by hearing cock’s crowing (cock a doodle do)  but in Pandya capital Madurai, people get up by hearing the sound of Vedas. The poet adds Four Vedas that were born in the mouth of the god who was born on the lotus flower(Brahma)

(Hindu scriptures say that Brahma was born on lotus flower that came from the belly of Vishnu. The scriptures also say that the Vedas are coming non- stop from the mouth of Brahma)

Paripaatal poet 9-12/13 also use the epithets musical and poets for brahmins

Poet is a direct translation of the Rig vedic word Kavi.

Perumpaanaatruppadai—line 301– poet praised brahmins as the custodians/guardians of the Vedas.

Brahmins and parrots

Brahmins were fond of raising parrots as pets in their houses. This is evident from Mandanamishra- Adi Shankara anecdote and Thevaram poems of Tiru Gnana Sambandar. They say even the parrots in Brahmins houses reciting Vedas. Parrots are known for imitating the sounds exactly. Perumpaanaatruppadai—lines 300/ 301 also show this custom has been there for over 2000 years.

He described the town where the curved beak parrots repeating/imitating  the Guardians of Vedas(brahmins)

Paripaatal 2-25 praise Brahmins as the people who explores (the meaning of) of Vedas and followers of false less Vedic Vratas (vows).

Puram verse 166 says Vedas are Four and they are studied with Six Subordinate/ ancillary subjects (Aaru Angam).

Pathitruppaththu 21-/6 poet also mentioned five things studied by the Brahmins. According to old commentators the Five of Brahmins are –Praatisaakyam (Vedic pronunciation guidebook), Niruktam (etymology). Naattam (Astrology/astronomy), Controlled five senses and Vedas. This was sung by a Brahmin poet by name Paalaik Kauthamanaar (Gautama). There is a Tamil Miracle attached to this section of Pathitrup Paththu. Chera king asked “Oh Brahmin, you may take whatever you want from this kingdom. What do you want? Please let me know”. The poet replied that he and his wife should go to the heaven. The king was surprised by this request and consulted the Brahmin scholars. They prescribed Ten Yagas. They were done. During the Tenth Yaga the Brahmin poet and his wife disappeared (they went to Heaven). This is reported in the ancient Tamil book.

Secret of the Secrets

Vedas are translated as MARAI in Tamil which meant Secret/ Hidden meaning.

Paripaatal 3-65 used the word Secret of the Veda; in other words, secret of the secret. Famous commentator Pari Mel Azakar interpreted it as Upanishad.

Kalittokai Prayer verse also mentioned the Six Minor Subjects studied by the Brahmins along with the Vedas. This showed that the First Grammar Book, First Etymology Book, First Astrology/astronomy Book , First Phonetic Book, First Ritual book and First Prosody Book in the world are included in the Vedic School. Great Tamil poet Nakkirar studied Vedas for 48 years; Bharadvaja studied it for 300 years. Manu Smrti’s first chapter says people lived 400 years During Krta Yuga ( In Kali Yuga it was reduced to 100 years)

The six Angas are Siksa (Phonetics); Vyakarana (grammar); Nirukta (lexicon, etymology); Kalpa (manual of rituals); Chandas (prosody); Jyotisa (astronomy-astrology).

Conclusion

Anthanar meant only Brahmins. It was also used for saintly Brahmins like Adi Shankara, Madhwa, Ramanuja. Brahmins were held high in the society because of their spotless character, selfless service and life long study of Vedas and six Angas.
