DR CHAMUNDEESWARY AND SUBRAMANIAN SITARAMAN’S  DISCUSSION ON THEIR NEW PROJECT ‘KURUVIK KOODU’ – 20 MTS

Dr Chamundeeswari is a lawyer and researcher in cultural heritage and development law. She is a Bharatanatyam dancer, trained in the Kalakshetra style of nritta and Smt. Kalanidhi Narayanan bhani of abinaya, having completed her arangetram under the guidance of the abinaya exponent Padma Bhushan Srimathi Kalanidhi Narayanan and her dance school Abinayasudha in Madras. She has completed her Government of Tamilnadu lower and higher exams in bharatanatyam, and lower exam in carnatic music. Having moved to the UK in 2000, she has developed her classical repertoire in an international context and has found the exposure to new ideas and literature deepen her love for classical work, and led her to experiment in bringing together different classical arts, such as literature and dance. She has choreographed and performed innovative solo and group Bharatanatyam productions, in the UK, India, Mexico, USA, Australia, Croatia, Costa Rica, Netherlands, Portugal and Italy.

Her recent choreographic work, all funded through Arts Council England, include Shades of Love: Chandrika, and Dancing Vernacular Indian poetry – Kshetrayya (2021) Chinnadevi (2020) Women of Mahabarata (2019) Rasamanjari (2019), Gopala Vimshati, East Meets West and Madras Sepoy (2018).

She is currently doing research and development work on Kuruvi Koodu, a poem by the poet Tiruloka Sitaram, and today she will be discussing this.

Subramanian Sitaram is the 5th of the seven children of Tamil poet Tiruloka Sitaram (1917-1973), who strode the literary scene in Tamilnadu as Mahakavi Subramanya Bharati’s principal message bearer in the period from 1945 to 1973. Subramanian was a career banker and worked at several places in India during a career spanning 31 years and later for 9 years at Dubai, UAE. He is a Treasury and Risk Management specialist. He consults for banks in Risk Management and also offers training on Financial Risk to Corporates and training institutions.

Subramanian was 17 years old when his poet father passed away. However, he spent a good amount of time with his father during his last few years, travelling with his father on his lecture tours and meeting authors. Subramanian also ran his father’s printing press for 4 years after his passing away before joining banks.

Subramanian produced a documentary on Tiruloka Sitaram, a dance video on Tirulokam’s long verse drama ‘Udaiyavar’, an Odissi dance performed by his daughter Suprita Trilok and also organised the Centenary celebrations of Tirulokam at Chennai. A committed follower of Tirulokam’s literary works, he was also instrumental in bringing out the complete poetical works of Tirulokam with English translation and notes by Sekkizhar Adippodi T.N.Ramachandran in 2014.
